Con

I was talking with a friend of mine when this topic came up. He thinks that the idea of a free society is a selfish thing that cannot exist in an ideal world. I totally disagree. Any takers?

OK, so I win by default, since my opponent has failed to submit an argument. Gee wiz, I hate having to type 100 characters.

I apologize for my tardiness I have been very busy with school (40 page report on Nubian civilization)

Ok, well to bad I showed up late I took this argument because it looked interesting. Of course I don't truly believe that freedom is selfish I will play the opposite for the sake of www.debate.org.

Before we begin lets define freedom,

The power to determine action without restraint; general exemption or immunity

Now I do not believe that the United States of America is a selfish country by any means. However we are far from the first country to accept a free concept. Lets take a look at the ancient Greeks for a few moments. This is the society that developed direct democracy much of what we call government today "For the people by the people" came from the Greek society.

The Greek civilization was and still is a bastion of freedom in the ancient world. However while the Greek people enjoyed the fruits of freedom they enslaved thousands of conquered races most dominantly the Messenians or "Helots" In fact the now popular Greek society due to Hollywood's massacre of the battle of thermopylae, used the Helots in a taboo ritual of manhood. When a young spartan was reaching adult hood one of his tasks would be to go out during the night and murder a targeted Helot.(The Spartans targeted Helots for murder who where smarter or more beautiful than the others, aka forceful equality)

Now for the sake of time and arthritis in my knuckles we will skip every one else and go for the also well known free society the Romans.

The Romans much like the Greek society had a form of the freedom concept when Rome was a republic. However during that time Rome conquered thousands of societies and enslaved them. During the time of Emperor Vespasian and Emperor Titus the gladiatorial games that we are all familiar with thanks to Hollywood's massacre of the story of Spartacus aka "Gladiator" Rome's lust for blood and the games sent Roman armies out to wage war simply for the sake of gathering more slaves to quench Roman thirst for blood.

Now I am sorry that that turned into a history lesson, however being a history teacher and a history student we can look back and depend on the History of this world to answer almost any question.

The fact is History shows us that with the two societies that the U.S.A received a most helpful contribution to government in one point of their existence enslaved thousands most likely more along the lines of millions. History shows us that in these "free" societies the concept of freedom selfishly applied to blood of their society and no others.

Thus history shows the concept of freedom had been proven throwout history that it is a very selfish one.

Ah, in response, no I do not think people vote on who had the better argument very often at all. That does not however justify simply voting for who one feels is arguing the truth, such votes moot the point of debates. You can do the same with an opinion poll.

"Selfish is the highest virtue you can hold."

mmmmmm try explaining that to our vets who have lost life and limb for you to have dreams.

Who said selfish is a bad thing? Selfish is the highest virtue you can hold. Maybe mankind just doesn't know what real selfishness is....and has given it concepts that don't really match it truly...

Pro has a point, but I think he should understand something.

Con made this debate in order to express his views. This was supposed to be a three round debate.

By taking this debate and disrespecting Con by forfeiting 2 rounds, THEN offering a response, Pro essentially reduces a 3 round debate to a debate where Con does not get a response, but Pro gets 6+ days to think.

Thus, while we can examine the posts above and clearly see that Pro's argument was very good, this is negated by the fact that he deprived Con of his chance to show off what HE had to say.

Now, Pro is obviously very busy, but there are some on this forum who may want to use that tactic against their opponents. Thus, I must vote for Con since he was done an injustice. Voting for Pro would be unjust and unfair.

Hopefully, this debate can be started over fresh. I liked where it was going.

I disagree I think that right against wrong is a viable reason for voting on this website. Now in an intellectual hall or a true debate it is about presentation of course but come on you cannot seriously believe that people vote for who argues better on this website.

Haha, it matters little if you are right. Right and Wrong do not hold ground in debate, thus I have to vote Con as he attempted to debate.

I know that blasted con is bad....Candice I wonder if you can read? I think you have trouble concentrating I am the pro in this debate.

Perhaps you should see that I was consumed with school again I should say DO NOT VOTE for me I came late I do not deserve a win I simply thought I would give it my best shot while I still had time left.

Did it ever occur to you that the reason people vote for me is because I am right??? mmmmmmmmmmmm no cant be that

How can people vote for the con, when he didn't even give the pro a chance of rebutal?
Posted by candice 8 years ago
candice
It's intersting... because the con did the EXACT same thing to me, and only posted an argument when I couldn't make a rebutal. Convenient... it's easy to debate when you don't have to debate.
