I have in the past, critisized people relentlessly for arguing on this subject. To me it seemed incredibly pointless and anyone who thought they could prove or disprove god needed to be removed from the gene pool.
Upon pondering the mysteries of the universe, however, an idea suddenly fell upon me like a ton of bricks. There I was...soaping up in the shower, and I realized, ...God does exist!!!
Now dont get me wrong, I have always been a believer and a devout christian.
Let me explain:
Religion is perhaps the single most controversial matter in the entire world. Its controversy is simply the product of a vast multitude of ideas that individuals hold. It seems that everybody has their own interpretation of god. Thats because in religion, the definition of a higher being is flexible. Everybody can choose to see god however they would like to see him, whether its a jolly fat guy (no, i dont mean santa), a bearded water-walker, or a burning bush.
When arguing with atheists, they often use this as an attempt to disprove god. After all, how could a higher being who demands attention allow so many people to worship him so differently? How could a higher being so specific in his rules and commandments, allow such a vast diversity of creeds and canon? What I realized in the shower that day, was that this never truly argued the existence of a god, only the physical existence of god and that God most certainly exists, even if he doesnt exist.
It is now my firm belief that whether or not god physically exists doesnt matter in slightest because he is still here, if nothing more than an idea. All around the world "god" has one thing in common...he incourages people to do good; to better themselves. The vast majority of the world still remains very religious, many devoting their whole lives to this higher being and despite the many doctrinal differences, you can always find him. You find words he has "spoken". You can read about miracles acredited to him. You can study his commandments to his people. The more you find out about other religions, the more u realize just how consistent "god" is.

I made that way too complicated. Let me put it more simply.

The Statement: The idea of God exits. Thats a "duh!" statement
My Point: Because the idea of God exists, and because it is in reality a great and influential movement, god does exist if nothing else than in the embodiment of his billions and billions of believers.

there is no way for you to lose this debate on the substance of your argument. if you define God as you have, there's nothing ot debate. it's like if i said... I call that rock God, therefore, since that rock exists, God exists.

my point in taking the debate is simply to say that you should not have taken the debate given that there's nothing to debate, given that it's totally subjective what you did.

my other point, if you define God in any meaningful terms, eg intelligence at the elast, beyond vague ideas like you gave, and define proof substantially.... then God cannot be proven.
of course, "meaningful" is debateable as subjective, but if i'm claiming it objectively, then we can at least reasonably debate whether its subjective. what you gave as a "debate" is really no debate at all.

i suppose we can debate if this is much of a debate, cause, i see no elements that are debateable otherwise. anyone who'd try to debate you would be playing games and not engaging in real debate, and there's no point in you guys playing games in a debate forum.

My point is simple
God Does Exist

Your right in that according to my logic, of course he exists. What you as the opposition would have to do is disprove my definition of "God".
If my whole argument is based on my definition of the word "God" meaning more than an actual physical being, then you want to shoot holes in my definition. Kick my legs out from underneath me.

I am a devout atheist.

I still see good people in this world that are christian.

But the issue we atheists take with Christianity is not that YOU believe in a god. We don't care if you believe in one. It's not our job to tell you who or what to worship.

What we take issue with is that our society is run with Christian values and hurts us and our ability to live in happiness.

By all means, worship. But stop banging on my door trying to convert me, stop telling me I'm going to hell for doing this and that, stop making "immoral" things immoral because the bible says they are immoral, they are only immoral to some, not to all, and they should be legal to whomever wants them. (Except for things that impose against others rights, like, murder, or rape!)

But by all means, I believe in the idea of a personal Jesus. I think that this concept has done a world of good and I encourage this lifestyle for all christians.

Just leave us athiests out of it and we can live in peace.

What can I say? Con gave up. The problem is, this debate was winnable but Con didn't make an attempt.

Pro gets my vote, and a challenge to debate this topic again.

Hey, you forgot that many gods images are already fashioned (like Zues or Shiva), and that the monotheistic god made humans in "his own image."

Tada :D

The idea, depending on the interpretation, also influences people to do bad things. The crusades remain a rather glaring example. 9/11 is a pretty fine example.

But its a little hard to argue the idea does not exist.
