The death penalty is inhumane. No matter what crime someone is accused of committing, no person deserves to be punished by death. It is cruel and not morally correct.
Chief_Sosa

Con

I believe that the U.S. Government should not declare the death penalty as cruel and unusual punishment. Prisons across the country face the problem of too many prisoners and not enough space. Each prisoner requires a portion of a cell, food, clothing, extra guard time. When you eliminate the death penalty as an option, it means that prisoner must be housed for life. Thus, it only adds to the problem of an overcrowded prison system.

Pro

The Supreme Court in the 1958 case of Trop v Dulles, expressly endorsed the view that what are prohibited "cruel and unusual punishments" should change over time, being those punishments which offend society's "evolving sense of decency."

Con

Please explain how punishments would change? What changes would be introduced to the prison system?

Pro

Punishments would change because the way of life over time is much different so we now believe ways of handling situations should also be different. No changes will be made to the way prison is ran. Still will be a strict way of living but the death penalty is not ethical and would not be used.
Chief_Sosa

Con

Please explain how things should be handled then? Should a serial killer just be given life in jail? No, give him the death penalty. Thats what someone like that deserves. Good Day

Reasons for voting decision: Pro never really provided a case, simply asserting that the DP was cruel and not morally correct. While Con's arguments were weak, Pro had BoP. Pro wasted an entire round justifying why the definition of cruel and unusual could be changed, and never really defended *why it should be changed* beyond simply asserting that it was so. Everything else seemed equal enough not to warrant scoring.
