I got the idea for this debate after noticing both Mass Effect 3 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim are coming out at the end of this year. I'll start the argument for Mass Effect. RPGs are generally about choices. What class you are, what weapons you wield, it's all about crafting your own experience.

Mass Effect, however ups the scale of these choices infinitely. Now, you choose whether to destroy a enemy base full of technology or to hand it over to a human extremist group and hope they won't abuse the power, or whether you should wipe out a violent species or let them rebuild themselves into a potentially helpful race. These choices, coupled with a unique and well made dialouge system, make Mass Effect a compelling series in which you are constantly shaping and changing the world around you. You are given characters who are more complex and interesting than most characters in other art forms like cinema, and then forced to watch them die because you made a bad call.

The fate of the galaxy is put in your hands, and the road ahead is filled with grey decisions.

I have made the case for Mass Effect, I look forward to seeing someone make the case for The Elder Scrolls (which I still think are awesome games) so we can get a proper debate going. And please guys, keep it clean. If I wanted to hear the argument made for either of these games made through childish sex references, I would go on YouTube ;).

The reason elderscrolls is so much better than mass effect is the freedom you get in elderscrolls. The freedom to go anywhere, lockpick nearly anything, kill nearly anyone, pick pocket anyone etc.this sense of freedom i what makes elderscrolls so great.

Mass effect has a good sense of freedom too. But in mass effect you can't travel to any planet, you can't kill anyone, you can't pickpocket anyone.

Thank you for accepting this challenge Imc211. You are right in one sense, the sense of freedom is what makes the elder scrolls a great series. However, even this in a sense is limited, as your actions have no impact on the world around you. Your just a traveler, just passing by. You have little direct effect on the world and it moves on without you. In Mass Effect, you have a different kind of freedom, the freedom to change the world, to decide the fate of billions of people. This also makes the in-game world richer, because you have a stake in it and you have the power to change it. Also, the limited range of missions makes each one more unique and engaging, thanked in no little part to the cinematic conversations. Each one has an individual goal story and background. Most missions in the elder scrolls are just variations upon "conquer the dungeon". Also, the combat in Mass Effect is more varied and deep, nearing the quality of a lot of shooters.

For an example of some of the qualities of Mass Effect I have stated, please enjoy this short clip from it
Warning: Very small spoilers for Mass Effect 2.
