The current NHL playoff system is screwed up. Challenge me first, then I'll talk.

I'll challenge you, and have an array of points to discuss, so let's start. :)

There are two divisions in each conference in the NHL. Since the main problem is in the Eastern Conference, I will use it as an example.

The playoff format works like this: The top three teams in each division automatically earn a berth to a playoff spot. The next two teams in each conference, regardless of division, also make the playoffs. The division winner with more points faces the wild card team with the fewest points. The division winner with fewer points faces the wild card team with more points. The second and third teams in each division play each other.

Assuming the playoffs started today, the Washington Capitals would be the top seed in the Metropolitan Division and the Eastern Conference. That means the second and third teams, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Columbus Blue Jackets, would play each other. The wild card team with more points, the New York Rangers, would play the division winner in the Atlantic Division. Here is where the problem starts. The top three teams in the conference, the Capitals, Penguins, and Blue Jackets, are in the same division. The New York Rangers, the first wild card team, has 94 points, while the top team in the Atlantic Division, the Montreal Canadiens, has only 91 points. That means the wild card team, the New York Rangers, would probably win the first round, even though they don't have home ice advantage, and would easily beat whoever they face in the second round (Senators or Maple Leafs) and would make the Conference Finals, even though they are a wild card team. Also, the loser of the Penguins and Blue Jackets matchup would be out after the first round. That basically means that either the second or third best team in the league will be out after the first round, while some loser in the first wild card spot actually ends up making the Conference Finals.

Another side problem that comes up with this is that the Rangers figured out that they would have an advantage by being the first wild card team, and they started to lose a few games on purpose to gain the unfair advantage in the playoffs. One news source that apparently doesn't exist anymore says that, even though they have the second-best record in the league, the Pittsburgh Penguins have the hardest route to the Stanley Cup Final, while the Rangers have one of the easiest paths.

If you aren't convinced yet, check out these news sources for more details:
