The NBC Comedy The Office is better without Michael Scott played by Steve Carell. The character was unfunny and mean, and the show overall is better without him there. The other characters are funny enough to be able to carry the show by themselves.

Debate will consist of 5 rounds.

I will argue that The Office is better with Michael Scott still a part of the show. Michael was the main character of the show; he was the force between many of the most important arcs on the show. Much like in the office itself, he was the patriarch of the series, pivoting the show through various fases.

The Office seasons two and three are largely regarded as not only the best of the series, but two of the best comedy seasons in the history of television. The character of Michael Scott was a truely unique being, though often very obnoxious he almost always meant well and was a very complex character, unlike many of the other one dimensional characters on the show.

The Office is way passed its prime and was a much better show when Michael Scott was still on it.

Michae's departure left room for other characters to grow. Because he's gone, there's more screen time for all the other characters, especially characters that barely speak like Meredith and Creed.

A great comedy star, Will Ferrell, was able to come on the show because Michael was leaving, as well as the addition of James Spader as Robert California.

The episodes since Michael's departure have been really funny and so many storylines have been able to have been explored because he's gone.

Toby is actually allowed to speak now that Michael isn't constantly making rude comments about him. The show just offers more now that he's gone because not everything is foucsed on him. The other characters are even allowed storylines.

Usually the characters would just be subject to Michael's wacky adventures, but now they get their own storylines, too.

The show was suffering during Michael's last years, and now there is room to improve now that he's gone.

But...Michael was The Office. I still believe that his departure should have marked the end of the series.

I agree that the show was much better when Michael was on it because he was one of the four main characters at that point: Michael, Pam, Jim, and Dwight. When his character left, it left a hole in the main character slot and manager position. First the show tried to find a replacement with Robert California, but failed because that character gets boring and obnoxious after a couple episodes. Then it tried to replace Michael with Andy, but failed again because Andy is supposed to have a terrible work ethic and is much better as a sub-plot character. They couldn't have Dwight or Pam fill it because those two are funny where they are and Dwight's management was disastrous. Jim should have been the replacement because he was co-manager earlier, but seems to have lost all ambition. The show has had to resort to some completely cleche and boring ideas like Kathy's trying to seduce Jim or Erin's staying in Florida. Neither of which lasted more than one episode and was not funny in the slightest. All in all, after Michael left, the show began to fall apart without a steady, humorous character.
