Ayy. It's been a while since I've done a debate, let alone be on DDO. Since I have made my glorious, triumphant return to this site, and I want to start off easy, I've decided to do a song debate.

Each person will post 2 songs per round.

For ease of judging, each round will have a theme, except the last one.

All songs must be provided via Youtube links.

R1 is strictly for acceptance.

R2) Theme is Success/Failure, Overcoming/Facing a Struggle.

R3) Theme is Apologies/Anger.

R4) Theme is Encouragement/Uplifting.

R5) No Theme

A note to voters: please do not vote on this debate. This is strictly for the entertainment of the debaters and viewers.

I accept this song debate.

I am a big music fan and hope to expand on my musical tastes.
Debate Round No. 1

I would like to thank ThinkBig for accepting this debate.

Song 1: Failure - Breaking Benjamin

Song 2: Carry On - fun.

Thank you for those songs.

The theme for this round is success/failure or facing a struggle. The two songs that I've chosen are "Go the Distance", and "The Impossible Dream."

Song 1: Go the Distance from Hercules.

I have often dreamed of a far off place
Where a hero's welcome would be waiting for me
Where the crowds will cheer when they see my face
And a voice keeps saying, this is where I'm meant to be

I'll be there someday, I can go the distance
I will find my way if I can be strong
I know every mile, will be worth my while
When I go the distance, I'll be right where I belong

Down an unknown road to embrace my fate
Though that road may wander, it will lead me to you
And a thousand years would be worth the wait
It might take a lifetime but somehow I'll see it through

And I won't look back, I can go the distance
And I'll stay on track, no, I won't accept defeat
It's an uphill slope but I won't lose hope
'Til I go the distance, and my journey is complete

But to look beyond the glory is the hardest part
For a hero's strength is measured by his heart

Like a shooting star, I will go the distance
I will search the world, I will face its harms
I don't care how far, I can go the distance
'Til I find my hero's welcome, waiting in your arms

I will search the world, I will face its harms
'Til I find my hero's welcome, waiting in your arms;

Song 2: The Impossible Dream

To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go

To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star

This is my quest
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless
No matter how far

To fight for the right
Without question or pause
To be willing to march into Hell
For a heavenly cause

And I know if I'll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable star;

Debate Round No. 2

Nice songs. I have always liked Michael Bolton. I have never heard of Il Divo, but they they sound excellent - I always love a good quartet. Now for my next songs.

Song 1: In the Air Tonight - Phil Collins

Song 2: I'm So Sorry - Imagine Dragons

Thank you for those songs. I've always have been a huge fan of Phil Collins and Imagine Dragons. Collins is one of my favorite song writers.

Song 1 - Anger: "The Lord Hath Exalted Thee from Among the People" from Elijah

I am an opera singer and have had the honor of singing in Mendelssohn's oratorio Elijah. It's a very dramatic oratorio that details the life of Elijah. In this particular scene, he confronts King Ahab and Jezebel on turning their backs on God. Queen Jezabel then promises to destroy Elijah and have him killed.

Song 2 - Apologies/Forgiveness: Avinu Malkeinu

I am Jewish and one of the prayers we pray during Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur is Avinu Malkeinu. It is a prayer asking for forgiveness for our sins.

It is possibly one of the most moving prayers in all of the synagogue services. I've provided a translation and lyrics.

Hear our prayer
We have sinned before Thee
Have compassion upon us and upon our children
Help us bring an end to pestilence, war, and famine
Cause all hate and oppression to vanish from the earth
Inscribe us for blessing in the Book Of Life
Let the new year be a good year for us

Avinu malkeinu sh'ma kolenu
Avinu malkeinu chatanu l'faneycha
Avinu malkeinu alkenu chamol aleynu
V'al olaleynu v'tapenu

Avinu malkeinu
Kaleh dever v'cherev v'raav mealeynu
Avinu malkeinu kalehchol tsar
Umastin mealeynu

Avinu malkeinu
Avinu malkeinu
Kotvenu b'sefer chayim tovim
Avinu malkeinu chadesh aleynu
Chadesh a leynu shanah tovah

Absolutely beautiful. I have always been astounded by the power of an opera singer's voice and their ability to project it and express emotion.

I cannot find any other words to describe Avinu Malkeinu besides "powerful" and "moving." I love it.

Now for my next songs:

Song 1: You Raise Me Up - Selah

Song 2: When You Come Back Down- Nicklecreeck

You Raise me Up is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Song 1: True Colors by Phil Collin (Cover by Celtic Woman)

You with the sad eyes
Don't be discouraged
Oh I realize
It's hard to take courage
In a world full of people
You can lose sight of it all and the darkness,
Inside you makes you feel so small

But I see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors are beautiful,
Like a rainbow

Show me a smile then,
Don't be unhappy, can't remember when
I last saw you laughing
If this world makes you crazy
And you've taken all you can bear
Just call me up
Because you know I'll be there

And I'll see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let them show
Just show your true colors
True colors are beautiful,
Like a rainbow

Such sad eyes
Discouraged now

When this world makes you crazy
And you've taken all you can bear
Just call me up
Because you know I'll be there

And I'll see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let them show
Just show your true colors
True colors, true colors

'Cause there's a shining through
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let them show
Your true colors, true colors
True colors are beautiful,
Beautiful, like a rainbow

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Show me your colours
Show me your rainbow

Show me your colours
Show me your rainbow;

Song 2: Yesh Tikvah (There is Hope) by Benny Friedman

Once again I will provide a translation

Why the fear, why the frown
Why the smile upside down
Shake yourself from the dust
Scrape your soul from the rust
Know that this too shall pass
For in G-d we trust

There is hope
If we sing our hope together
We have faith that is stronger than the terror
No despair, no dismay
Everything will be okay
He is with us night and day

Brother dear
Dry your tears
Take my hand, never fear
Let's advance, side by side
And let's cast our fright aside
Don't forget all the love
That we have from Above

And you'll see with the dawn
All the pain will be gone;

Debate Round No. 4

Thank you for introducing me to these songs - I am always looking to expand my musical taste.

Here's a little blues for ya.

Song 1: Way Down We Go - Kaleo

This is an instrumental soundtrack that I like. It tells a story with a combination of modern and classical music.

Song 2: Oni: Sword Base - Marty O'Donnell

Many thanks for a fun debate!

Reminder to readers: do NOT vote on this debate as per round 1. Though any feedback is certainly welcome.

Song 1: Sim Shalom by Thom King

Cantor Thom King is the Cantor at the synagogue that I attend and has became a close friend of mine. I'm proud to call him my friend and one of my mentors in music. This is a recording that he did of Michael Isaacson's arrangement of Sim Shalom. The song is part of the daily prayer service and is a prayer for peace.

Once again, I'll provide a translation.

Grant peace everywhere goodness and blessing,
Grace, lovingkindness and mercy to us and unto all Israel, Your people.
Bless us, our Father, all of us as one with the light of Your face;
For by the light of Your face You have given us, Adonai our God,
The Torah of life, and love of kindness, and righteousness and blessing and mercy and life and peace;
And may it be good in Your eyes to bless Your people Israel at all times and in every hour with Your peace.
Praised are You, Adonai, who blesses His people Israel with peace.;

Song 2: Skyrim

This song is the theme song from the video game of the same title. It's a good song and I love the music video that Peter Hollens did with Lindsey Stirling.;

What an interesting debate! I'm just going to write some of my general comments. Firstly, well done to both debaters for your excellent song choices.

My favourites were:
Round 2- Failure by Breaking Benjamin. This was my first time hearing this one and I absolutely loved it. I thought the lyrics were great and the music was extremely memorable. Can I also just say Il Divo (Impossible Dream)- amazing voices!
Round 3- Avinu Malkeinu. I loved absolutely everything about this song- the choir, Lemmer etc. Despite the fact that it was in a different language, it still had a strong affect on the listener (ie. me in this case). I suppose music really is a universal language. It was lovely to hear something totally different. Thanks for sharing that ThinkBig.
Round 4- Tie. You Raise Me Up is also one of my all-time favourites. The-Voice-of-Truth's choice version had a really nice instrumental introduction, which kind of reminded me of Irish airs. I also loved Celtic Woman's True Colours- a very unique version of this song. I particularly liked how they performed this :) (but obviously that was not considered in my judging).
Round 5- Skyrim. Unfortunately, I was unable to view ThinkBig's other song as it seems to have removed? But generally, very interesting choices in this round by both debaters!

Well done again! It was a pleasure to listen to all of the wonderful music. As it adds, ThinkBig has won but I don't think the competition part was suppose to hold any importance in this debate anyways.
