Simply put, the Saints are about to get a Super Bowl Ring.

Simply put, the instigator of this debate has the burden of proof. At this point in time, he's given you no reason to believe that the Saints are going to beat the Colts in the Super Bowl. So, you have no reason to support his position and vote affirmatively.

In the NFL the Saints rank 6th in ruishing yards while the Colts rank 32nd. They also rank 1st in points scored whereas the Colts rank 7th. Finally, the Saints are 1st in the leauge for total yards and the Colts are 9th. The odds are highly against them. They will loose.

So, for the Siants, and not the Colts, vote PRO

Thanks, Pro, for the quick response. To clarify, I am most definitely rooting for the Saints and I do believe they can and should win. However, I took this challenge for the sake of debate and to see if I can out-argue my opponent which I am about to do...

A response to Pro's arguments:

1. The Colts rank 32nd in rushing yards

While this is true, the Colts have also had a near-perfect season. Obviously their offense is doing something right. I've got two words to explain the Colts lack of rushing: Peyton Manning. Peyton Manning is arguably the best quarterback in the league. As such, his discipline, precision, experience, dedication (hours and hours spent practicing and watching tape) leadership and overall offensive timing contributes to the Colts explosive offense which has and can succeed without a dominant RB.

2. The Saints have a higher PPG and rush yard average

So? It's no secret that the Saints have a dominant offense. However, the Colts do too. In the end it's about winning the football game. Stats aren't everything. Remember the '06 Superbowl season? Basically the Colts had one of the worst run defenses in the league (5.3 YPC average)... but they held all three teams they faced in route to their Super Bowl to I think 83 yards max.

Larry Johnson (KC) = 32 yards
Jamal Lewis (BAL) = 53 yards
Corey Dillon (NE) = 48 yards ( I think NE had 83 total yards)

Basically, stats are relevant but not indicative of anything. The Colts have overcome being statistically unfavored in the past. They fix their weaknesses.

Now onto Con's arguments:

1. Drew Brees vs. Peyton Manning

Obviously the QB plays a tremendous role in the game. Peyton Manning inarguably has more experience, poise and offensive awareness than Drew Brees. His leadership, preparation and discipline will greatly help his team. He exploits mistakes in the opponent's D at every opportunity and is not known to make a lot of mistakes or turn the ball over. Will the Saints be able to stop PM? Like they say - you live by the blitz, you die by the blitz. PM will work around it. Not to mention that the Saints have admitted to target PM, and the NFL has become a lot more concerned about protecting the QB these last few seasons... so expect some penalties against the Saints, which might hurt them in a game predicted to be really close. In his L/2 NFL betting battles against the Saints, Manning has thrown for nine touchdowns against no interceptions. Indy covered and won both games with ease.

2. Defense

The Colts have a superior defense. Against the Vikings, the Saints won largely in part due to RB Adrian Peterson's fumbles, and Brett Favre (who is infamous for his intercepted passes) turning the ball over. The Colts rarely turn the ball over, so the Saints won't have the same opportunities that they did with the Vikings whom they barely beat. The Colts have a better pass rush and defense. The Saints rely on mistakes created by their opponent; Manning and the Colts won't make too many of them. The Colts were the #1 ranked scoring D until week 15 [1].

3. Receiving

Manning has thrown for 5,123 yards and 38 TDs, and what he's proving in the playoffs is that he can use any number of weapons. Both WR Reggie Wayne and TE Dallas Clark caught 100 passes during the regular season, but the men that are tearing apart opposing defenses for the Colts are WRs Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon. Neither one expected to factor into the Indianapolis offense this season, as Wayne, Clark, and the injured WR Anthony Gonzalez were expected to be the dominant options in the passing attack, but Collie and Garcon have combined for 27 catches, 360 yards, and three TDs in two playoff games [2].

4. Performance

While both teams nearly went undefeated, the Saints tried a little harder. The Colts only lost twice and both times used their JV squad - not their starters. They've also played around injuries all season long. How the teams played against recent Playoff opponents also says a lot about their post-season game and abilities. Minnesota scored 4 TD's with 5 turnovers, yet the Colts played the top defense (Jets) with one turnover and managed to score 30 points.

5. Pressure

The pressure's on NO to win given the media bringing up Hurricane Katrina all the time, and the Saints having never won a Super Bowl. Meanwhile, Manning doesn't have to worry about any added pressure -- he wants to win for his own personal achievement.

I'll leave it at that for now...

To clarify my position, I am rooting for the Saints to win and I think the Saints WILL win tomorrow's Super Bowl. However, I took this debate for fun and to see if my opponent could give me a challenge. He could not. Not only did he forfeit 1-2 rounds (bad conduct) but he hadn't addressed any of my contentions. Meanwhile, I have responded to all of his rebuttals. To re-cap what I've said and what has gone unaddressed in the debate, the Colts will win because:

1. Peyton Manning is arguably the best QB in the league, having the best season of his career. The guy's a machine. He doesn't make mistakes often, and he rarely makes the same mistake twice. He is without a doubt the backbone of the Colts team and will surely go down in history as an all-time great. It's because of him that rookie Wide Out Austin Collie and 2nd year player Pierre Garcon are having the success that they are this season (both went into this season with combined 4 career catches). Peyton Manning is smart and knows how to beat blitzes; he is also accurate and strong enough to hit small targets in big plays to create big opportunities. The guy's an all-star and provides great composure, leadership and discipline to the team.

2. The Colts defense is under-rated. Opponents have scored 20 points this postseason and have been shut out in six of eight quarters. Before the Colts rested their starters for the final two-plus games, they ranked second in fewest points allowed [1]. Also, as I've said, the Colts have a better pass rush defense, and don't forget that the Colts were the #1 rank scoring defense until week 15 of the regular season [2].

3. Again, Manning has a number of receiving weapons (Clark, Garcon, Collie, Wayne...) and Manning's numbers this season prove that he knows how to cooperate with them to make big receiving plays. With the Saints defense expected to blitz Manning a lot (and with good reason), that will leave the Saints D vulnerable in case Manning avoids the blitz and hits a WR for a big play... which he will.

4. Experience plays a big factor in games like this. Peyton Manning and half of the Colts have been to a Super Bowl before and won (three years ago against the Bears). Meanwhile, only 4 players on the entire Saints roster have been to a Super Bowl before. The Colts know what to expect and what it takes to win; the Saints are banking on "karma" and hoping that the added pressure of playing for Katrina victims somehow gives them magical abilities on the field :p

5. Both Dwight Freeney and Raheem Brock (if Freeney can't play) have the ability to beat LT Jermon Bushrod - a weak link in the Saints offensive line. So does Colts end Robert Mathis. If the Colts D can stop Drew Brees, well, the Who Dat boys can't rely on Reggie Bush the entire time, can they? The Colts D will pick up on that and defend that too... just as they stepped up their rush defense 3 years ago to win the Super Bowl and dominated in that regard, not letting anyone run on them.

Also, I mentioned how arguably the Colts have the better team with the greater poise as they could have potentially gone undefeated this season but pretty much chose not to (whereas the Saints did try and failed). Anyway with all that said, again, I hope the Saints DO win... but my opponent has offered absolutely nothing of substance in this debate, and has under-performed the negative on all levels. It was a good, fun debate anyway so thanks a lot, Pro. And I hope you're right about the outcome!

The Saints won the Superbowl, but it is not possible to win a debate by not showing up.

And Ps. Cipher, I know you've been on my d1ck vote bombing me and all, but how about some proof for those accusations? I didn't plagiarize from anywhere and cited my sources. Not to mention that a lot of this debate is about citing the same stuff they say on ESPN over and over again, soooo...
