The Simpsons, the longest running cartoon show and sitcom in the history of television, has garnered dozens of awards and even more recognition for its creative humor and groundbreaking ideas for modern television.

Family Guy, on the other hand, is a cartoon based on recycled humor that, while it may be entertaining, is surely inferior to the Simpsons.

In this day and age the simpsons is just out dated. Yes its true the simpsons are still hilarious but family guy is much funnier because it draws from everything from pop culture references to political figures. It is edgy but not over the edge. Its clever and just straight up HILARIOUS! way better than the simpsons at least.

Family Guy steals from The Simpsons

For this debate, I will consider the entirety of the Simpsons against the entirety of Family Guy. The newer Simpsons episodes are a raw attempt at extending the life of the magnificent series, so I will focus on seasons 1 through 13, the best years of the show, against all 7 seasons of Family Guy.

The Simpsons is superior for the following reasons:
1. Inspiring modern television humor
2. Revolutionizing the FOX Network
3. More creativity with jokes
4. Better implementation of their "inside jokes" dedicated to loyal viewers

The Simpsons is based on an American family with an intoxicated father, well-wishing mother who is addicted to gambling, outcast daughter, and troubled son. Family Guy, eerily enough, is based off these similar characteristics, with the exception of the dog Brian. In Seasons 2 and 3, the Simpsons used the same Family Guy humor of "Like that one time when..." and obviously inspired the main premise of Family Guy. Matt Groening and company wished to avoid recycling their humor and wanted to establish a plateau of success based on originality and creativity. In the early 1990s, there was no show on television anything like the Simpsons. A few years later, however, Futurama, Family Guy, South Park, and other shows were able to direct their humor towards an audience that was inspired by Matt Groening's humor. The Simpsons could not live long unless they were able to "knock their viewers' socks off", and so they did. Combining the concept of a sitcom, a cartoon, and a current affairs strategy featuring many celebrities in music, sports, politics, and many others, the Simpsons were a craze. Merchandise sold through the roof, similar to the height of popularity for Superman, Mickey Mouse, and other iconic American figures. Even public schools took the initiative to ban Bart Simpsons t-shirts because of his on the edge, in your face attitude.

The FOX network began in the mid-1980s as an attempt orchestrated by Rupert Murdoch to spread his television prowess into competition with the three big television channels: ABC, NBC, and CBS. The Simpsons brought forth FOX's highest ratings into the mid-1990s and inevitably led to FOX's acquisition of NFL broadcasting in 1993 from CBS. Family Guy, now airing on FOX, still does not hold the main time slot on the Sunday night lineup.

The Simpsons' humor consists of the now-infamous Family Guy humor, character catch phrases, irony, pop-culture references, and many other types. "The Simpsons Already Did It", a South Park episode, put it best by establishing that all of the plans and ideas Butters could think of had already been done by the Simpsons. They were the first of their kind. Priceless moments, such as the Season 9 episode "Joy of Sect", where Homer is fishing by a lake singing to the tune of the 1960s Batman theme song: "Na na na na na na na na na fishing!". Mr. Burns' "Excellent" and age references, Nelson's "Haw haw", Superintendent Chalmers' "SKINNER!", Comic Book Guy's "Worst ______ ever...", and so on are timeless classics. The main Family Guy inside joke, when Peter hurts himself and grabs his knee wincing in pain for a minute or so, is not only unfunny but ridiculously annoying.

The Simpsons is a far superior show to Family Guy. I am a biased person myself, I own every season of the Simpsons from seasons 1 to present, and have watched ever episode. To conclude, Family Guy can be entertaining and funny, but the show only exists because the Simpsons revolutionized television.

No disrespect to the simpsons but the CURRENT family guy is much better than the CURRENT simpsons. Yes it is true the simpsons helped lay the foundations but family guy built the house. I still strongly believe that the new family guys are much funnier than the old simpsons. The topic of this debate is which is more "entertaining" and even though the simpsons may have been the first it is definatly not more entertaining.

By giving an analytical approach to the topic, it does not specifically name any time period of comparison. It merely states that one television show is more entertaining than the other. To consider a television show, one must look at the episodes that made it most famous and most memorable, for those are the ones that they are interpreted by. Did Family Guy "build the house" by using one joke over and over and over and over again? Is it really funny to use flashbacks that have nothing to do with plot development as a method of humor? Family Guy jokes are certainly funny; however, the television show is not. The jokes can be separated from a show into a couple minute segments, and nothing changes: there are semi-funny unrelated jokes with absolutely no plot. The reason why Family Guy got kicked off television after season 3 was because the Simpsons was still in its prime and able to kill Family Guy's ratings and favorability.

The topic states which is "more entertaining" and "funnier". Because I have already established how much funnier the Simpsons is, and how Family Guy jokes have already been used by the Simpsons, the only question left is of entertainment. Family Guy can be entertaining, when the few funny jokes are being played, but the rest of the show's nonsensical dialog and needless filler prevents it from being in the same breath of air as the Simpsons. If anything, Family Guy can be considered funnier than the Simpsons (which it isn't) much easier than Family Guy can be considered more entertaining than the Simpsons. The Simpsons were able to pour out 13 golden years where no episodes received a poor reception from its audiences. Family Guy has barely made half that time, and its episodes have already become hit or miss as much as a Jay Leno monologue.

Thanks,

The Colonel

yes your first point is true... there is no time period. But what you must have misinterpreted is that that the old Simpson's weren't more entertaining than family guy. Yes they laid the pavement and all but they most certainly are not funnier or nearly as clever. I think the Simpson's is a great show but lets face it, the majority of america's youth would much rather watch family guy. besides on a not so serious note, you can't beat stewy the baby! i mean come on!

fox tv is different from fox news. both owned by NewsCorp, but that's their only similarity, unless one judge's television channels by their business associations...

o i also forgot to mention that revolutionizing fox tv is a bad thing. being a ron paul supporter i believe that FOX new is a bunch of propaganda and worthless nonsense. but thats just my 2 cents.
