I'd like to start out by saying thank you for allowing me to debate this topic with you. It's my first one on here, so I'm going to start off with a bang.

You say legalize drugs, but you don't give any specifics.

First of all, legalize ALL drugs, or just specific ones? There are so many drugs out there, some with minor effects such as marijuana, some with major effects like PCP. Some are extremely addictive such as cocaine and heroine, some are based on how much you WANT to take, such as shrooms.

As far as marijuana, yes, I would say legalize it. HOWEVER, there would need to be strict regulations implemented on the sale and use of it. For one, it would have to be regulated such as alcohol. There should be an age requirement, you should not be allowed to drive or operate vehicles under the influence, and it should be just as illegal to buy for or supply to minors as alcohol.
Also, there should be a tax on it, just like there is for cigarettes and tobacco products. That money should go towards the national deficit.

NOW, for the rest of them;
As you stated in your reply to me, you state that people should be able to melt their bodies as they want. You can't just look at the individual perspective of this. Once someone gets hooked on drugs, they'll do anything to get a fix. Families will be destroyed, crime will go up, not to mention the rest of the people who would have to deal with the results of someone who's high. Have you ever seen in real life or a video of someone on PCP? They're out of their mind, and it takes a lot of force to restrain them. Would you want to be at Wal-Mart when someone who's on a trip starts tearing down the aisle, putting you or your family in danger?
You can't just look at the person on the drug, you have to look at how it will affect everyone they interact with, and everyone who cares about them.

There's a reason drugs aren't legal. The repercussions would be catastrophic. Crime would skyrocket, families would be destroyed, and the country would rapidly deteriorate at such a rapid pace that there would be no way to stop it.

This debate is for all drugs, also you broke a rule, the acceptance rule.

My case first:

C1: cost of the drug war

After 40 years 1 trillion dollars have been spent on the drug war. (1) In 2010 the goverment spent 550$ per second. (2) 2011 it is over 1000$ every second. (3) 48.7 billion dollars spent in 2008. (4)

My point: the drug war is way to expensive.

C2: the drug war kills people

Since 2006 there have been 13,600 deaths related to the drug cartelles. (5) btw the cartelles are drug war made. (6) yep the drug war made violence. (6) 318 federal police have lost their lives in the drug war. (7) 47,000 killed total. (7) (8)

The point: to many people die in this war.

C3: the drug war is not working

The global drug war has failed says the global Commision on drug policy. (9) the prohibition of alcohol decreased users. (10) the drug war is like this, good initial effects, then the amount if users raise. (10) in 2007 35% of college students used stimulants not prescribed to them. (11) After 40 years of the drug war drug violence has increased. (12) A drug Czar says it has failed. (12) Also a DOJ report shows the drug war has failed. (13) (14)

C4; decriminization works

Since the decriminaluzation in portugaul users in all categorys has decreased. (15) on a smaller scale:

States/provinces with less strict drug laws actually have lower drug rates. (16)

So laws=\= end drug use, and decriminaluzation works.

C5; right to drugs

I will never use this right, but there is a right to using drugs.

It took an ammendment to have the alcohol prohibition, there is no such law with drugs. (17) The 10th ammendment leaves all unenemerated powers to the states, this power should be left to the state, but it is not therefore the federal drug war= unconstitutional. (18)

I will refute next round, vote pro

I'm glad that 16kadams pointed out the absurdity of denying someone complete jurisdiction or sovereignty over their own body chemistry. Although this would be my top argument, at least it is mentioned.

@ryko

Why not the other drugs? People should melt their bodies all they want. You solution ends no problems relating drugs. There should be punishments, such as a drug section in the hospital that either:

A let's you die
B fixes you but the tax payer does not pay, he gives 50% of his earnings and his house car etc to pay for the treatment, assuming he doesn't have insurance.

Marijuana should be legalized, but with the same regulations as alcohol. Age requirement, can't drive under the influence, and can't buy for minors. Also, implement a heavy tax on it and put all the taxes raised off of marijuana towards the national deficit.

As far as cocaine, PCP, LSD, and the harsher drugs, absolutely not, keep them illegal

16K, you may want to possibility limit it to one illegal drug. I may consider taking this then.
