My partner and I affirm that the United States should increase border security along the Mexican American border to prevent undocumented immigration.

Contention 1: Illegal immigration is hurtful to our economy

Subpoint A: Illegal immigrants has impacted our economy in wage depression. The New York Time states, "Labor economists have concluded that undocumented workers have lowered the wages of U.S. adults without a high-school diploma " 25 million of them " by anywhere between 0.4 to 7.4 percent. They work for cheaper pay, so employers decrease the wage for everyone."
http://www.nytimes.com...

Subpoint B: Money is being sent to Mexico as remittances, taking money out of our economy and putting it into Mexico. Christopher Martinez tells us that "Remittances from Mexican immigrants in the U.S. were the number one source of income from foreign affairs in Mexico at one point. In 2005, remittances sent from immigrant workers back to Mexico amounted to $28 billion."

Contention 2: Increasing border patrol makes sure that immigrants would legalize themselves.

Subpoint A: Since these immigrants would have to legalize themselves to enter the country, they now would pay taxes. As illegal immigrants, they wouldn"t pay taxes. They work in a cash economy where the employers would pay their employees with cash instead of checks.

Subpoint B: When immigrants aren"t legal, they lead a bad quality of life. Terrible things happen to immigrants because they don't or can"t go to the police; such as rape. Many are subjected to crime because of their lack of money since they are paid less than minimum wage. So, many immigrants live in poor conditions such as slums.

Since 1970, the number of immigrants from Mexico and South America has increased from <1 Million, to almost 14 million today. It would be advantageous for the U.S to help these immigrants obtain citizenship and be allowed to pay taxes, have bank accounts, credit cards, loans, higher education etc. Especially because the number of immigrants is increasing.

Many of the immigrants from Mexico want to earn a better living, and Americans can greatly benefit from taxing their earnings. Being able to expand our economy and use these workers for skilled and unskilled labor is crucial.

There are many international examples which can conclusively support why immigration is a good thing for countries;
http://www.economist.com...

The economist reported on why immigrant workers actually helped the economy, and gives the hard evidence supporting it. Another article (headline) from the economist shows an example of why tougher immigration laws internationally don't help shrink the number of illegals.
"Perhaps half a million people live illegally in Britain. The government"s draconian new immigration bill will not change that much"

I believe we should embrace immigration. There's no real way to stop it completely, and the extradition processes can take up to years to complete. Not only that, there really isn't enough supporting arguments for and against loosening immigration laws. The real debate should be able WHAT legislature can the government form that would be fair for immigrants, and fair for US citizens.

In your first argument, you say that it would be advantageous for the U.S to help these immigrants obtain citizenship and be allowed to pay taxes, have bank accounts, credit cards, loans, higher education etc. Especially because the number of immigrants is increasing. But the thing is, that IS what WE are trying to obtain by increasing border patrol. Because they are sneaking into out country and being illegal immigrants, they aren't able to obtain citizenship and pay taxes.
And BECAUSE they aren't paying taxes as an illegal immigrant, they are taking money OUT OF ECONOMY.

You also argue that they can be used to expand out economy and use them as workers, but the thing is, we are already LOW on jobs and the immigrants are doing nothing to help us. All they are doing is TAKING jobs from American citizens.

You also show us international examples. But these happen SPECIFICALLY in other countries, NOT AMERICA. Though you claim this to be "hard evidence", how do you know this would actually be BENEFICIAL to America?

Though there is no way to stop immigration completely as you say, we could still help to prevent it with border patrol as they are hurtful to our economy.
