+ According to a 2000 study by the World Health Organization, publicly funded systems of industrial nations spend less on health care, both as a percentage of their GDP and per capita, and enjoy superior population-based health care outcomes.

+ The US, which runs on a free-market health care system, spends the most on healthcare (15 % of GDP). With additional administrative costs, this drives up the cost of health care for its citizens.

+ Health is a human right, and should be given regardless of economic status.

+ The US is ranked #37 in the world in healthcare (WHO), while public health care systems (such as France, Norway, etc.) enjoy a position in the top 10.

+ According to the Institute of Medicine, "lack of health insurance causes roughly 18,000 unnecessary deaths every year in the United States. Although America leads the world in spending on health care, it is the only wealthy, industrialized nation that does not ensure that all citizens have coverage."

+ Costs of health care are the #1 source of bankruptcy in the US.

I think I'll end this list here.

I apologize to TheLibertarian for declining, but I don't have any professional experience on the topic, and I've frankly lost interest in it over time.

Actually, a single-payer government plan is affordable and doesn't have to stifle innovation in this country. Just because the government would be paying for health care doesn't mean that hospitals and doctors have to become government employees. They can compete for patients based on outcomes and patient satisfaction, which would push all providers to develop better methods of delivering care. I'm finishing up my masters in public administration and actually did a policy analysis on the idea, so I'm very interested in the subject.

It's too bad the con left. It's a great debate topic. The US has the best technology, but it does have many inefficiencies in it. The government can help facilitate for more efficient treatment, but it shouldn't be the only payee. This issue is not as simple as a human right. Universal Care harms innovation on future treatments and is, at all current projections, unsustainable in the US. Again, too bad the Con didn't respond. :-(

Universal Healthcare, like Canada and France. We are the only industrialized country to not have it. Watch SiCKO. It is a good movie.

I guess he didn't want to try and compete against that good of an opening. We actually spend 16% of GDP, and its projected that we will spend close to 20% by 2015. We're ranked 37th in the world based off of a 2006 World Health Organization, where we're ranked between Costa Rica and Slovenia. They cited within the report that it is our lack of access for poor people to our system that ranks us that low. But great opening. I'm looking forward to someone actually taking up this debate.
