Rousseau

Pro

Well, I'd be more than happy to get further in depth after my opponent brings up his points, but here are mine:

The United States is on the decline. This is because of several reasons.
1. Lack of serious global competition, power-wise.
2. Severe Lack of Soft Power, and Hard Power that may be faltering
3. Enemies that are transboundary and practically invisible
4. Dependence on Foreign Oil and Oil in general
5. Economic stagnation
6. Policing policy failing
7. Lack of a strong candidate to further neccesary goals
8. Usurpers, surpassing us in areas we used to excel at.

I await the arguments.
Thoreau

Con

I'm very sorry, I simply do not have the time to continue this debate. It was bad planning on my part, to accept the challenge in the first place.

My apologies for wasting your time, friend.

Alright... Well, I guess that's it then.
I have to post at least 100 characters though, so I'll just keep talking for a bit.
Vote Pro.
Thoreau

Con

That is that, indeed.

Once again, I apologize for the waste of time.

100 characters... Vote Con! Just kidding. You probably shouldn't vote at all. (Yes, I still don't want the match loss on my record...)
Debate Round No. 2

Pro

Yeah, well I think the arguments (or lack thereof) speak for themselves. I urge you to consider that my contentions have been untouched, and therefore deserve the votes.

I do appreciate the honesty though, Thoreau.
Thoreau

Con

It's true that I haven't made any arguments, but take my assurances, this was all due to a lack of time.

I certainly wouldn't hold it against anyone if I lost, but I really do feel that this debate was a simple judgement error on my part, which shouldn't cause a match loss (though I admit, I lack any legitimate reason WHY it shouldn't). Honestly, this debate is probably better off left alone.

I guess this wraps things up, and I'll see you later, Rousseau.

Such a good question. One of those votes is mine, I confess, but the only reason (no, really, the ONLY reason) that I voted for myself was to tie things up (sort-of making it like no-one voted). Why anyone else, anyone else AT ALL would vote for me is beyond my reasoning.

Seriously, kids, just don't vote. This isn't a debate. This should probably be removed from the server. Since it's not a debate, it shouldn't be voted on on this website.

Wow. I was kind of down about having been voted against in my recent darth vader debate, but honestly, I'm not so sure any more. If a guy can have a large amount of votes just for forfeiting on the first round, the voting system on this site is beyond absurdity! C'mon people, what did Thoreau say to make you believe that he won this debate?

I voted for Pro only because it was tied. Had it been 0-0 I would have not voted, but come on... Thoreau seems smart, and he definatly doesn't seem petty. I'm sure he wouldn't be devastated with one loss.

Can people PLEASE comment on why they are voting for Con? This is ridiculous! He presented no arguments, and thus he agrees with me. It would be better to take the Con's advice (of not voting) rather than voting against someone who effectually agreed with me.

His argument is time management, and while I respect that, there is no way he should win. At best, it should be a tie of 0-0. He shouldn in NO way have 9 votes.

I'm saying this as a friend of Thoreau's, and as a debater. At the very least, respond as to WHY you vote Con.

WTF people!!! My personal opinion would put me on the Con side of the debate, BUT the Con forfeited rounds and completly failed to provide an argument. How can anyone vote for him? It isn't a poll.

Well Kierkegaard, I'd be more than happy to debate you on this subject, and if you would consent to one, I will gladly challenge you. I respect your ballot and realize that you can't take it back. However much I wish you could. I don't disagree with your stance altogether that much, as the majority was clarification points. I'd be more than happy to go more in-depth on every point if you would like (should we debate). I urge other voters to not vote on opinion for several reasons. A debate should be voted on like a clean slate. In a perfect world (which all people should strive for, hopefully) a voter would be a clean slate, formulating his opinion on the topic based off of arguments presented ONLY in the debate round. Assuming mine are true (which Con hasn't negated, and therefore must be), I should win. Also, if people vote off of opinion, it likens the debate to something much less debate-esque. It would become much more of a poll than anything. Now while I would love to hear your opinion (hence the tentative challenge), I staunchly stand agains't voting on opinion in debates.

All in all though, I appreciate and respect your reasons for voting, and stating them is better than not stating at all.

Ah, I voted Con for these reasons:

1. And this lack of competition would do what to us? Although understandable where this argument would come from, competition (whether exactly important or not) will arise.

2. I think the severe lack of Soft Power may come from our disastrous crap in the middle-east, but keep in mind we still have Soft Power other places as well. And although the middle-east crap will effect our other relations, they won't do so in such a way that would decimate all other relations. Hard power-wise, if we have no competition, how exactly would it be faltering?

3. It's not as if we're the only ones with these enemies..Britain has it's share of "invisible" enemies as well. It's not going into gigantic recession, so why would our country do the same?

4. Although dependence in oil and foreign oil may still be present, it's starting to go down because of different fueling methods. Some people understand that at some point there'll have to be some sort of reform in what type of fuel we use, and that has grown considerably over the years, so there's nothing to say that it won't stop growing. Nonetheless, eventually there WILL be a reform of some sort fuel-wise.

5. This is the only point you got me on, although I still wouldn't exactly call it "stagnation". Just because we're behind China and a few other countries doesn't mean we're behind everyone else. Nonetheless, we're not in stagnation YET...but we will be. Trust me on this one. You know what my dad does.

6. I'm not exactly sure about this point, although I'm not totally convinced. Policing doesn't seem that bad to me.

7. If they're necessary "goals", then they will be attended to, whether or not they're addressed or not, although I believe the most important have been.

8. I admit, I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about here. Enlighten me.

So, I voted con because of my own opinion.

That sounds like a good idea.

Honestly, I'm surprised I got any votes at all.
