The resolution: The United States Should Legalize Marijuana for Public Consumption.

This means for non-medical use as well as medical.

Marijuana (cannabis): http://en.wikipedia.org...

Please use the first round to accept the terms. You have 72 hrs to argue after you accept the challenge.

Marijuana should NOT be legalized due to it's effects although it helps relax you it is also bad for you like for instance it makes your skin sensitive to cold and heat. It also makes your mouth dry which makes you drink more water, juice, soda etc. which can cause you to over hydrate.

Debate Round No. 1

Pro

Voters, please note that I will be posting a section on improvements, since my opponent is new to DDO.

Refutations:
1. "It makes your skin sensitive to cold and heat".
Compared to the side effects of many other illegal drugs this is very minor.
2. "Dehydration". Again, a very minor side effect.

Contentions:
1. Marijuana has positive health effects.
2. If Alchohol and Cigarettes are legal, why not 'pot'?
3. It would bring lots of much-needed revenue to the state.

1. Marijuana has positive health effects. Marijuana, containing the chemical THC and commonly known as "pot" or "weed", has been known to reduce tumor growth. [1]

2. Alcohol and Tobacco. According to the CDC (Center For Disease Control) Alcohol is one of the leading causes of death in the US, and Tobacco follows not far behind. Marijuana is not even on the list. [2]

Sources:
1. http://www.sciencedaily.com...
2. Cdc.gov

Suggestions:

1. Make your arguments longer and more organized. Avoid run on sentences.

2. Cite sources.

3. Check your spelling before posting

Voters Note: Do not vote on this debate. I want this to be a learning experience, and I want to avoid accusations of noob sniping.

Refutations:

Short Term: Again, the short term effects of many over the counter drugs can be much worse.

Long Term: "Cancer" Marijuana, smoked is much cleaner than tobacco.
"Immune System": The source you cited states that "It is not certain whether marijuana damages the immune system of people".
"Lungs" Tobacco has the same effects, so it is unclear why tobacco is legal.

Suggestions:

1. Don't leave all your arguments to websites.
2. Leave a conclusion at the end of your argument summarizing your points.
3. Number your points.

Con

Marijuana is just like a step toward harder drugs like heroin, cocaine etc.
Stoned driving and other drangers would defiinatly increase.
With it legalized would increase the chances of drug use falling into the hands of kids.
Physical damages will be done to user who abuse it.
There would be and increase in secondhand smoke damage to the bystanders.

Perhaps its gone on too long. Something deemed as a harmful drug for so long but never was from the beginning, and tabacco and alcohol were legalized. We get programmed by things bigger than us that we can't control, like parents, government, religion etc. you must see past them with your own mind as an indivdual and use unbiased logic. Whether people declare it legal or illegal I see the truth, and I will not stop enjoying the benfits of marijuana.

I would like to point out, as someone who has used both hard core drugs and pot. First off, I did COKE BEFORE I smoked pot. I also did Meth and a variety of other HARD CORE drugs PRIOR to using pot. Without pot, I would have never gotten off the hard core drugs.

Second off, if you want to take the gate way approach, well, Milk is a gate way substance to Cereal. Baby bottles are the gate way to hard core drinking, and the list could go and on. Using the "gate way" argument is tired and old. Try again.

Third off, there is no proven fact any where that Marijuana is harmful in any way. I am a science major, so yes, I know what I'm talking about, we just did a paper on this in my English Comp II class on pros and cons of legalization. The con team could not find any hard evidence that any harm came from smoking pot.

ALSO, there are no cases, EVER, where someone has been caused harm or died while smoking pot. Can you say the same of alcohol and cigarettes, which are both legal.

Figure it out. Your argument sucks!

I'd like to criticize Con's contention about over-hydration. I'd like to point out that it takes an EXTREME amount of fluid to over-hydrate; NOT simply drinking more than usual.

To con, I'm just going to point out that proving marijuana is harmful isn't enough to win. To keep it illegal, you would also want to show that use of marijuana will increase if its legalized. Without saying that, Pro can turn your argument by saying that marijuana usage will *decrease* if legalized, so weed being harmful would be a reason to legalize it and reduce the amount of people being harmed by it.

I see some potential in that last round. In fact she might have even negated your resolution. Good work to both of you.

jayjay is on the correct side of the argument, but she just doesn't know how to debate unfortunately. The pro contentions could have easily been torn to pieces.

Reasons for voting decision: I do agree with Con, though I found her arguments painfully unconvincing...For one round, Con posts an entire paragraph of assertions, failing to even provide a source or distinguish between minor and significant detriments...In another round, she merely posts sources for the debate, but fails to even read them. And finally, Pro merely extracts contentions from another site, but fails to justify them with evidence.
