Pro sends his greetings to Con and thanks him for beginning this topic of discussion.

Pro has traditionally held an apprehensive attitude towards private firm use, but he will debate from a fresh perspective this time.

The root issue of this debate is in the ethical stability of U.S. military objectives of themselves. However, seeing as how the topic of the debate specifically references the use of "private military firms," it must be assumed that U.S. military objectives are sound in the first place. That is, military objectives are automatically just.

The use of private firms are most controversial because they tend to invite corruption and war crimes faster than if an internationally-engaged government began a military operation. Additionally, private firms are more willing to take more clandestine action than normally known for an international powerhouse such as the United States.

That said, the nature of the military objective must be taken into account. Admittedly, a very large amount of the United States military objectives and operations in the past have been unjust and inexcusable. Alternatively, more recent military operations have appeared more humanitarian than in previous years.

Centering on the humanitarian question, Pro presents his first argument, which he will lovingly call "the Libya Supposition." With that, Pro presents a logical sequence.

(1) Given: Private firms in military operations are justifiable or they are unjustifiable.
(2) Given: If an option is more cost-effective than another, it is justifiable.
(3) Given: A humanitarian crisis is looming, with potential consequences for civilians.
(4) Given: Private operations come at a lower cost than use of a nation's military.
(5) If the military intervenes, then the crisis is stopped.
(6) If private firms intervene, then the crisis is stopped.
(7) If private firms cost less than government initiatives and both can stop the crisis (5,6), then it follows that private firms are the most viable option.
(8) If private firms are the most viable option, then private firms are justifiable.

Once more, Pro thanks you for opening this debate, and Pro looks forward to your response.

An LD-style debate is a discussion in which two opposing sides attempt to prove their arguments via ethics, morals, philosophy, and logic. It stands for Lincoln-Douglas, referring to their debates over the ethics of slavery prior to the American Civil War.

Hope this helps!
