"The Wii..." - http://en.wikipedia.org...
"...is the better..." - more advantageous or effective (http://www.merriam-webster.com...)
"...video game console." - http://en.wikipedia.org...

Round Rules:
1. In the first round, my opponent will choose one (1) other video game console.
Ex. Xbox 360.
*Note that my opponent may not choose a handheld game console.
2. In the first round, my opponent will choose one (1) variant of that video game console.
Ex. Xbox 360 Pro
3. In Rounds 2-4, we will debate over which console is better: the Wii, or whatever console variant my opponent chose.

More Rules:
4. Price is a valid contention for this debate.
5. I reserve the right to post in the Comment section if my opponent either lies about what I say like what happened here (http://www.debate.org...) or starts new arguments in the 4th Round.

So, select a console, select a variant, and let's debate!

3) sure
4) pricing is important
5) I really dont care

Let's get this thing started!
Debate Round No. 1
mongeese

Pro

Alright, so it's the Wii vs. the PS3 (80GB).

First, I will point out some of the pros of the Wii.

1. Price
http://en.wikipedia.org...(seventh_generation)#Comparison
The Wii goes for $250. The PS3 goes for $400.
The Wii also comes with a wireless, motion-sensing controller, a nunchuck accessory to the controller, and a game, Wii Sports, that goes for about $40 in Japan, where the Wii and controllers cost $210.
This means that the Wii itself is worth about $150.

2. Controller
http://en.wikipedia.org...
The Wii introduces a revolutionary controller, the Wiimote. This item is wireless, and has motion-sensing capabilities. It can also be used as an incredibly handy pointer to select things on an on-screen menu, or do things like fire an arrow (http://en.wikipedia.org...) or pick up star bits (http://en.wikipedia.org...).
The controller also has a wide array of accessories, including:
Nunchuck
Classic Controller
Wii Zapper
Guitar
Wii Wheel
The Wii can also interact with another famous "controller," the Wii Balance Board.

3. Games
If you look at the list of top games, rated by IGN (http://top100.ign.com...), you'll notice that Nintendo dominates. Furthermore, many games on the list are available to the Wii:
1. Super Mario Bros. (Virtual Console)
2. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Virtual Console OR GameCube backwards compatibility)
5. Super Mario 64 (Virtual Console)
10. Super Metroid (Virtual Console)
11. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Virtual Console)
23. Super Mario Bros. 3 (Virtual Console)
32. Resident Evil 4 (GameCube)
46. Super Mario World (Virtual Console)
52. Metroid Prime (GameCube)
58. Super Smash Bros. Melee (GameCube)
97. F-Zero (Virtual Console)

Also, if you look at Screw Attack's list (http://top100.ign.com...), you'll see a similar pattern:
1. Super Mario World (VC)
2. LoZ: Ocarina of Time (VG, GC)
4. Super Mario Bros. 3 (VC)
5. Super Mario Bros. (VC)
6. LoZ: A Link to the Past (VC)
8. Super Smash Bros. Melee (GC)
9. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii)
13. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
...And so on. I don't feel like typing this list much longer.

So, Nintendo's long history of great games can all be played on the Wii.

4. Versatility
The Wii isn't just usable for games.
http://en.wikipedia.org...
Johnny Lee has discovered how to use Wiimotes to make things like cheap smartboards.

http://www.ascilite.org.au...
"The results of our evaluations will enable us to report on the accessibility of the Wii games console and
selected games for people with different disabilities. We will produce an outline specification for games
that can be used in an educational context and the ways that these games might be used, for instance for
therapeutic/physiotherapy purposes, for simulation of real life activities in a safe environment; and for
supporting the development of key skills such as collaboration, communication and coordination. We
anticipate that this project will contribute to the body of research on the use of video games in education
in the context of next generation gaming and will provide a starting point for potential cross disciplinary
research including, Computing, Sports Science, Health and Education."
http://www.lockergnome.com...
"So as I wait for the big hook up I find articles that say that the Wii can help people with disabilities with range of motion, dexterity, and burning calories. With my disability I cannot do much exercise with weights so this may be a chance to enhance my range of motion, burn off a few calories, and just return to girl gamer status of my age group."
The Wii, especially Wii Fit, can be used for overall exercise, and Wii Fit is used to help people with disability rehabilitation.

Now, for some cons for the PS3.

1. Price
It costs $400.

2. Poor Reception
http://en.wikipedia.org...
"The PlayStation 3 received generally unfavorable reviews soon after its launch, with many websites and reviewers criticizing its high price and lack of quality launch games. However, after a series of price revisions, Blu-ray's victory over HD DVD, and the release of several well received titles, the system received better reviews.
The PS3 was given the number-eight spot on PC World magazine's list of 'The Top 21 Tech Screwups of 2006,' where it was criticized for being "Late, Expensive, and Incompatible." GamesRadar ranked the PS3 as the top item in a feature on game-related PR disasters, asking how Sony managed to "take one of the most anticipated game systems of all time and — within the space of a year — turn it into a hate object reviled by the entire internet", but added that despite its problems the system has 'untapped potential.' Business Week summed up the general opinion by stating that it was 'more impressed with what [the PlayStation 3] could do than with what it currently does.'"

3. Technical Trouble
http://ps3.ign.com...

That's all for now.

Con

Awesome,
-So first I will start with rebuttals and counter-attacks, then move on to my own case in each.
1) Price:
Although the PS3 may be outrageously expensive, we must look at these consoles evenly. The PS3 makes up for its price by including an additional blu-ray DVD system. It's the only console that is capable of playing blu-rays. If one were to get a Wii, but wants to watch blu-ray, they would have to spend and additional 300$ minimum. As my opponent listed from his source "Blu-ray's victory over HD DVD." Blu-ray is the future and the PS3 is a good investment. So if you were to look at this the PS3 would cost less then the Wii if you subtract the Blu-ray. http://www.guardian.co.uk... "Merrill Lynch has published a note on Sony's PlayStation 3 that prices the parts at an estimated $800*" In fact although the PS3 may seem expensive, you can actually make money more money by selling it in pieces. If we were to consider overall pricing, by buying the PS3 you are actually getting more money.
2)Controller:
I agree that the Wii does have the revolutionary design of remote sensing, but that is because the whole idea of the Wii was meant to be designed that way. The PS3 makes a comeback though with a new recent design, that is PS3's motion controller which is even more accurate then the Wii. There classic dual shock controllers also have simple remote sensing. Even though most games don't incorporate it, it is sometimes used. If we were to look at all the controllers though the PS3 would dominate with its USB port and blue-tooth connection. The PS3 is able to use the traditional keyboard and mouse, practically anything that uses USB, and many blue-tooth devices. Not only that but the battery life of the standard sixaxis will last 30 hours on one charge.
http://news.cnet.com...
3)Games:
Currently almost every console has better games than the PS3. Remember that the PS3 did come out late leaving more time for both Xbox and Wii to develop and come out with their exclusives. If you look at the PS3 though, currently or in the future many exclusive titles will be hitting the PS3. Games such as MGS and Grand Turismo. Games that are designed for PS3 cannot even be compared with games such as the Wii or Xbox.
http://www.metacritic.com...
http://www.pcworld.com...
http://www.pcworld.com...
4)Versatility:
Nothing compares with all the additional crap they put on the PS3 and what it can be used for. Even its wireless controllers can be rigged do other electronic operations.
http://www.pabr.org...
http://www.physorg.com...
5)Technical Trouble
Already Sony has released updates for the PS3 to fix many problems, and will continue to do so. Now if your looking at trouble though we should look towards pirating, and hackers. Recently news has shown that the PS3's firmware has been cracked, but even though it has been cracked it isn't worth it. PS3 shows though that it is a beast "the PS3 is a completely different beast. The PS3's firmware has already given us gems like enhancing backwards compatibility and DVD upscaling. Likewise, new games will require a system to have the newest firmware installed in order to be booted (just like PSP games)."

Debate Round No. 2
mongeese

Pro

1. Price

My opponent claims that Blu-ray is the future. However, DVD is the present. The use of the word "is" in the resolution means that we are talking about the present. Therefore, Blu-ray is in the future, and is not relevant to the debate.

2. Controller

My opponent's source doesn't say whether or not this new PS3 controller has been released yet. If it has been released, then it can be used. Otherwise, it is the future, but we are debating about now.
http://www.divineo.com...
The Wii also has a keyboard.
The Wiimote can last for a standard of sixty hours, and if you use the pointer function, it's twenty-five hours total. The PS3 controllers don't have a pointer yet.
Also, don't forget the Wii Balance Board.
http://www.amazon.com...
The Wii MotionPlus was released this month. It further enhances the motion-sensing capabilities of the Wiimote.

3. Games

My opponent loves to talk about the future. However, the future is not the present, and is not relevant to this debate.

4. Versatility

Yeah. I don't think that that compares with the ability to make a $50 smartboard. Furthermore, you do not list the accessories available on the PS3.

5. Technical Trouble

Alright, then. The PS3 does not have bad technical trouble.

Every contention made so far either goes to PRO, has been completely negated, or applies to the future, not the present, making it irrelevant.

Con

1: Price
Though blu-ray will be used more commonly in the future, my opponent doesn't address the fact that blu-ray players out today cost 300$ therefore my argument is perfectly relevant to the debate. My opponent does not address my second attack. "'Merrill Lynch has published a note on Sony's PlayStation 3 that prices the parts at an estimated $800*' In fact although the PS3 may seem expensive, you can actually make money more money by selling it in pieces. If we were to consider overall pricing, by buying the PS3 you are actually getting more money."

2:Ok, scratch the PS3 pointer, but the fact that PS3 has the six-axis, and connects almost every PC, connects to the PSP, and also can use standard keyboard and mouse are just totally awesome. If you look at the Wii on the other hand, the Nunchuck, Zapper, Guitar, Wii wheel, and balance board cost money to buy where as the PS3 uses the standard USB and bluetooth to connect to things. Bet you can't connect your Wii board to your PC.
http://www.us.playstation.com...
3:Alright then lets look at games right now. Games made Specially for the PS3 such as MGS4, and Grand Theft Auto. As of now, out of 15 top games 6 of them belong to the PS3 and only 1 of them are played on the Wii. Looking at top games of all time, out of 15, 2 of them are played on the PS3 and the Wii never made the charts.
http://www.gamespot.com...
http://www.gamespot.com...
4:Versatility. PS3 has the option of using Linux practically making it a PC. bluetooth six-axis controllers can be configured to work with other devices "Using the PlayStation 3 controller in Bluetooth mode with Linux ." Also the PS3 is designed as a blu-ray dvd player.
http://www.macworld.com...

The PS3 itself as a gaming console is off the charts. lots of great and useful functions, HDMI, lots of memory, full and free connectivity capabilities, incredibly sexy, and high performance makes the PS3 the best gaming console and greater.

1. Price
While Blu-Ray may be the future, DVD is today.
DVD players can cost as little as $26.
http://www.google.com...:*:IE-SearchBox&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&rlz=1I7DKUS_en (broken link, copy and paste excluded portion into webpage address)
Furthermore, giving you the ability to take it apart for money doesn't exactly make it a great console.
Furthermore, there obviously isn't a high demand for the individual parts. Otherwise, Sony would sell the parts directly to them.

2. Controller
Everything costs money to buy. The Wii can also connect with the DS, which counteracts the PSP. Why would you connect your PS3 to your PC? Why not just use the PC?
You concede that the Wii has more video game controllers, however, with its Wiimote and Wii balance board and such.

3. Games
Your source appears to be flawed somehow.
http://www.gamespot.com...
Super Smash Bros. Brawl scored a 9.5, but wasn't mentioned.
http://www.gamespot.com...
So did Super Mario Galaxy.
Obviously, your source does not list all of their top rated games. Both Wii games trump all of your PS3 games.
Your second link lists only the top PS3 games. Why would any Wii games be listed?
http://www.gamespot.com...
http://www.gamespot.com...

http://www.gamespot.com...
Sonic Unleashed scored twice as high on the Wii as it did on the PS3. What does that say about what it can do for games?

4. Versatility
Again, why Blu-ray?
Furthermore, the Wiimote can get you a $50 smartboard, which ordinarily costs thousands.
That's versatility right there.

"The PS3 itself as a gaming console is off the charts. lots of great and useful functions, HDMI, lots of memory, full and free connectivity capabilities, incredibly sexy, and high performance makes the PS3 the best gaming console and greater."
The Wii has WiiConnect24, WiiWare, Virtual Console, the Wiimote, Wii Fit, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, most of IGN's top games of all time, and fifty million consoles sold worldwide.

In conclusion:
-the Wii is better-priced, because Blu-ray isn't today.
-the Wii has better controllers, due to its motion-sensing and weight-sensing technologies
-the Wii has IGN's greatest games of all time
-the Wii has ScrewAttack's greatest games of all time
-the Wii gives you a $50 smartboard
-the Wii keeps you fit
-the Wii has sold at least fifty million consoles worldwide
The Wii is the better video game console. Vote PRO.

Con

1: Price
The pricing for PS3 although expensive, is worth it. The blu-ray is today, already blu-ray dvd's and blu-ray players are out for consumer use. http://www.blu-ray.com... My opponent argues that taking apart the system doesn't make it great price wise, but if we look overall pricing the PS3 is giving you money!

2: Controller
True everything costs money to buy, but the diffrence is that the PS3 uses things that are more common such as a regular keyboard rather than having to buy a special Wii keyboard or other devices. Though the Wii may have more controllers and some interesting concepts, having a PS3 would be more practical. The ability for ones PS3 to connect to a PC is a great idea, and that it allows one to download PC content directly to their PS3 for use.

3: Games
My sources are perfectly fine, the reason i used the PS3 only list is to show the top ratings that the PS3 gets. Gamespot is actually a very legitimate source tied to the group E3 which seems to be fairly popular. Although Brawl may have gotten top ratings, both PS3 games that are overall high scorers have ratings of 10 which is perfect. Also it doesn't matter about multi-platform games, but games overall. PS3 dominates in the exclusive world.

4: Versatility
If you really want to get into cheap versatility. You can turn a PS3 into a home PC for free with the installation of Linux or Ubuntu. What is more important a computer, or a smartboard? The blu-ray as I've already stated above

The PS3 has cell processor which gives each unit tons of power as shown here http://www.physorg.com.... Then you have looks, performance, and so on.

In truth:
-The PS3 is actually worth more money than it is.
-I concede that the Wii has more intuitive designs, but the PS3 is more practical
-Six-Axis controllers also provide average motion sensing.
-The PS3 hit E3's top ten
-PS3 has better performance
-The PS3 gives you a FREE computer
-The PS3 is incredibly powerful
-The PS3 is the better console
-It is also INCREDIBLY sexy :D
Thank you for the debate :)

better - "more advantageous or effective"
A console is more effective and advantageous if it has better games.

And the people obviously consider the Wii series to be games, and Mario and Link together still dominate the market. Thus, Nintendo-pwn.
