The assault weapons ban was ineffective, and created an undue burden on individual 2nd amendment rights.

The Assault Weapon Ban was not proved to be effective, correct, but a typical American family or single man/woman has no need for a multi round assault weapon defined as:

Semi-automatic rifles able to accept detachable magazines holding more than 10 rounds and two or more of the following:

Folding or telescoping stock
Pistol grip
Bayonet mount
Flash suppressor, or threaded barrel designed to accommodate one
Grenade launcher

Semi-automatic pistols with detachable magazines and two or more of the following:

Magazine that attaches outside the pistol grip
Threaded barrel to attach barrel extender, flash suppressor, handgrip, or suppressor
Barrel shroud that can be used as a hand-hold
Unloaded weight of 50 oz (1.4 kg) or more
A semi-automatic version of a fully automatic firearm.

Semi-automatic shotguns with two or more of the following:

Folding or telescoping stock
Pistol grip
Fixed capacity of more than 5 rounds
Detachable magazine.

Or a weapon with a large capacity ammunition feeding devices, such as belts, drums, magazines, etc., regardless of whether the firearm met the laws assault weapon definition.

These weapons provide no benefits to the typical American and in fact create an environment for accidents or danger from many sources.

Thank you

My opponent has not really argued a case here. He has simply defined what he believes an assault weapon is, and then flatly asserted that private citizens don't "need" them. I might remind him that it is not called the "Bill of Needs", it is the "Bill of Rights".

The Assault Weapons Ban is violative of the Right to Bear Arms on it's face. [1] The US Supreme Court has repeatedly said that a law restricting a protected freedom must be narrowly tailored to serve a compelling government interest. [2]

A law that my opponent concedes was never shown to be effective certainly can not serve a compelling government interest.
