I think that the Death Penalty should stay. I do not believe that it is right to let a murderer stay in prison living off of tax dollars for the rest of his life. I believe that the penalty should only be used on people they have hard evidence on so they can avoid executing the wrong person. If the death penalty stayed, there would be less crimes in and outside of jail. Criminals would be afraid to kill someone fearing for their lives.
Does anyone object?

The death penalty violates our constitutional ban against cruel and unusual punishment and the guarantee of due process of law and the equal protection of laws. The enactment of the death penalty serves to be inconsistent with fundamental values of our democratic system. Capital punishment does not deter crime, and it is uncivilized in theory and unfair in practice.
The death penalty is more costly than life in prison. [1]
Evidence is not absolute. There is always chances of error in cases involved with the death penalty. [1]

Cruel...willfully or knowingly causing pain or distress to others.
I didn't say that I believe in shocking the prisoners to death. I think that they should die with a lethal injection that causes no pain. if a person who is in maximum security prison for life after raping and killing two children, what stops him from hurting someone while he is in prison? I believe that they should only have one year to live, that would save millions. Like I said before, I believe that the penalty should only be used on people they have hard evidence on. It is a fact of life, everything has a small risk. You claim that The death penalty is more costly than life in prison. the injection cost $86.00, to house a federal prisoner for one year $22650.

Lethal injection does cause pain. Here is an article that supports the cruelty of lethal injection:
http://www.newscientist.com...

If a person is in maximum security prison, he would clearly, in general, be unsuccessful in hurting someone else while in prison.

Although hard evidence may be found, there is still ALWAYS a chance of error in capital punishment cases. Edited videos, skewed data tests, and other factors are not one hundred percent accurate.

If my opponent read my sources, he would have seen the statistics that prove the death penalty being more costly than life in prison. My opponent has sourced nothing to prove his claims. I heavily urge a Con vote.

Yes we can go back and forth with link like http://cbs13.com... the states experts say that it is painless, I read your link, and it said that it cost $114 million more than life in prison, but that is not for lethal injection. another reason for the price being so high is because they are fed for 20 years while one death row. Reducing the sentence to one year would save millions. just type in Prison Violence and see all the stories about people hurting others in prison. The reason I am against pain is because the constitution. I really don care about the prisoner. Why are we so worried about them getting a little pain, when they had no mercy on the victim?

My opponent's source states:
"Attorneys for Morales rested their case after an anesthesiologist said errors by prison staffers with no medical background may leave inmates conscious and in excruciating pain masked by drugs. He said inmates could feel as if they are drowning, but obervers would not be able to tell.
No human endeavor can be performed to humane perfection every time."
I rest my case.

It's unrealistic to limit the prison sentence to one year and then perform the execution. It takes years of paperwork, trials, suspensions, and tests to convict someone of capital punishment.

It is more painful to have the convicted remain in prison for life. Death shortens punishment time, and takes the convicted out of misery. Vote Pro!

Death penalty should be implemented everywhere in the world because its the only way to control crime rates..If theres a death penalty, people will be more diciplined and will fear to commit crimes.

It's not the top debaters, it's the voters who don't read the debate. But no matter, a good debate is well worthwhile.

stu..., It's a debate site, so you can debate any issue I've raised. No need to stew over it.

It's probably a fair generalization to say that I think there are more poor debates on the site than good ones, but my critiques are meant to provoke improvement. Cheerleading doesn't do that.

Why guaranteed? Many of the top debaters are pro death penalty.

stu... Oh, I didn't know there was a 750 character limit. That makes a good debate impossible. Sorry.

If you want to try your full case, sure, post me a challenge. On this site, you have almost a guaranteed win, but it would be interesting.

I have tons of other issues, if only the character limit was larger.
It seems that many of the comments you leave on various debates are negative and arrogant.

The subject didn't come up in the debate, but murderers sentenced to life without parole thereby gets a free pass to kill guards, other inmates, and occasionally, if they escape, innocent bystanders. they are already serving life, so they just continue to serve life. Usually, these are not crimes of passion, so there is the possibility of them being deterred.

In 1984 Michael Dukakis ran against Reagan for president. As Governor of Massachusetts, Dukakis allowed a policy of those sentenced to life without parole to be let out on weekends, and one of those committed another murder during his weekend out. This is in the category of a "political risk" associated with the life sentencing -- there is a possibility of a later lessening of the sentence.

Anyway, I just wanted to suggest other issues that can be included a death penalty debate.

RL, I only had 750 characters per post. My 8,000 character argument on the DP has yet to be refuted. You want a try?
