Currently in the United Sates government requires people to be licensed to get married. It is this license that prevents polygamy and homosexual marriage.

Marriage is a union between consenting individuals and god.
Therefore:

I assert that the government has no business dictating the terms of marriage, and should recognise it no more than as a private contract.

Since you declined to post an argument in the second round, I will take the liberty of using your first round and your comment from the comment section, presuming that these are your views and that they would be the basis for your argument.

"I assert that the government has no business dictating the terms of marriage, and should recognise it no more than as a private contract."

I counter assert that it is the government's business to dictate the terms of a marriage; precisely because they recognize it as private contract.

Marriage:
a (1) : the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law

Since being married carries certain privileges by law; the government is part of this contract and can therefore dictate terms. One of the terms they dictate is that people require a license to get married.

"The exact origins of marriage are not known, and a subject of much debate. What is not disputed is the religious connotations with the origin of marriage in the country."

The reason that contracts, personal or otherwise, use definitions is to avoid connotations.

This is why the government should require a license for people to get married.

You being an atheist, I can understand your emotional attachment to keeping those things close to you far from God.

The exact origins of marriage are not known, and a subject of much debate. What is not disputed is the religious connotations with the origin of marriage in the country.

From well before the 11th century, Christians Jews and Muslims viewed marriage as religious ceremonies. It was such people who founded the country, and such an understanding upon which our laws were developed. (Including the English common law.

The origins of matrimony are not the subject of the debate. This debate is only conserved with the present legal state of matrimony in this country, and therefore loosely with the history of matrimony in the country

Marriage has nothing to do with gods. It is a civil arrangement.
