So before I began, thank you to whom excepts this debate. Doomsday or 2012 is now a little less than 3 years away and people across the globe are getting ready for whatever comes. Nuclear war, global shift, meteor strikes, hypercanes anything can happen and those of you who don't prepare will be left unsecured. There are many reasons why 2012 doomsday will happen, one being the mayan calendar, how, opponent can someone so civilized mistake the date and why if nothing were to happen did they end there calendar? Recently the swine flu is going around could the mayans have had a pandemic and there society as a hole had fallen, two being the prophecies, why would they all predict the same day same year same month, these people were all across the globe never spoken in there lives, thirdly its happening all around us, the economic crisis, the global warming, the polar shifts the flu pandemic already. Life as we know it can and will be destroyed on 2012. The likelihood of something happening is very high. A list of possibilities: Major changes in human DNA (indigo children), dimensional shifts, massive genetic mutations, super volcano, hyper-canes, unpredictable weather,

"Nuclear war"

Between whom?

"global shift"

Of what to where?

"meteor strikes"

Any evidence of an astronomical observation and planned trajectory of a meteor determined to strike in December 2012?

"hypercanes"

You have weather forecasts for 2012?

"anything can happen and those of you who don't prepare will be left unsecured."

'Anything can happen' does not detail in any manner the specific types of occurrences that may. Also it wouldn't be much of a doomsday if all we need to do is be prepared.

"There are many reasons why 2012 doomsday will happen, one being the mayan calendar, how, opponent can someone so civilized mistake the date and why if nothing were to happen did they end there calendar?"

Calendar in question is the Mayan "Long Count calendar," which is *recycled* to day 0 every 1,872,000 days - known as The Great Circle [1]. Mayan time was cyclical meaning there was no real "end" merely transition from one age into another.

By some calculations December 21, 2012 is that date of transition. As of now the calendar is of no interest to the Maya any longer - given their civilization died over a thousand years ago. Something they seemed to not be prophetic about ;).

"Recently the swine flu is going around could the mayans have had a pandemic and there society as a hole had fallen, two being the prophecies, why would they all predict the same day same year same month, these people were all across the globe never spoken in there lives"

That's a bit convoluted. The exact cause of the downfall of the Mayan empire is not known. There is no evidence to suggest it was a disease - not to say that such a scenario is impossible. There is some evidence that drought may have caused the empire to collapse.

"thirdly its happening all around us, the economic crisis"

This has happened before to no worlds end.

"the global warming"

Even if given as true - climate change models do not predict an "end date" nor one for humanity - concern appears to be over alot of other less capable of adapting species. Hurricanes should lessen under global warming models, given the increasing lack of cooler air.

"the polar shifts"

Maybe you mean geomagnetic reversal ... or actual polar shift hypothesis which involves the globe literally flipping resulting in the equator becoming polarised. There is evidence for both occurring in the past - only geomagnetic reversal is expected to occur again. No there is no verified date for this to occur simply because it does not occur instantaneously - instead it is expected to occur over a period of several months or years. Those animals that use magnetic positioning to navigate will be affected, its affect on the human populace however is negligible in terms of extinction.

"the flu pandemic already."

As current it is not a pandemic - it has the potential. It may also not.

Pandemic: An epidemic (a sudden outbreak) that becomes very widespread and affects a whole region, a continent, or the world.

Humans naturally produce antibodies to swine flu, and become resistant. Individuals are recovering from infection so there is no reason to assume this will not continue to occur. The current strain may mutate into something more resistant - it may not.

"Life as we know it can and will be destroyed on 2012."

Please be providing information on such.

"The likelihood of something happening is very high."

Given the lack of support for what you have proposed so far - doubtful.

"A list of possibilities: Major changes in human DNA (indigo children)"

Indigo children is an unsupported i.e. non scientifically verified new age term to describe a new 'special' generation of children. Behaviours range from ADD to acting like a normal child i.e. taps heavily into the Forer effect. Indigo children is like any other new age fad - it relies on the gullible to spread itself as being valid - much like personal angels or rocks that align your personal quantum field. Plus it sells books and makes parents feel special ;).

As to how that would even relate to 'doomsday' I have no idea. Feel free to expand.

"dimensional shifts"

What?

"massive genetic mutations"

Mutations occur naturally with every conception.

"super volcano"

Which is not 'Oh god Oh god the end is near' type of stuff. It blankets the area in ash, gas and lava for a given amount of time. Lake Taupo was a "super eruption" creating an ash winter and estimated to have wiped out around 60% of human population around 25 000 years ago. Populations still managed to survive nearby - and we have come a long way since then :).

"hyper-canes, unpredictable weather"

If it's so unpredictable then predicting the likelihood of its outcome in the future for destruction is moot.

Here's a list of more failed The End is Nigh claims:
