The portal series is a better series than half life. I like half life but the portal series just has some things half life doesn't. Portal has that mix of puzzle solving and comedy that half life just wont work with.

As the Pro has not answered the question I asked in the comments, I'll assume I need to give my argument.

Case I: Absolute Statistics
Let's first take a look at the statistics. Half-Life 1 has sold 9.3 Million Copies, earning itself 50 Game of the Year Awards {1}, with 4 Expensions. It was given a 94.02 Aggregate Score on GameRankings {2}, and a Metascore of 96 by Metacritic {3} Half-Life 2 has sold 12 Million Copies, and 39 Game of the Year Awards {4}, with 2 expensions. It has earned a score of 95.48 Aggregate Score by GameRankings {5}, and a Metascore 96 by Metacritic as well. {6}

Now let us take a lo at Portal. The first Portal Game's sales aren't locatable due to it being piggy-backed on the Half-Life Series in the Orange Box Set, and due to Steam's refusal to release sales, however it's GameRankings Aggregate Score is 88.81 {7}, and it's Metascore is 90. {8} As for Portal 2, it's sales number roughly 4 million, with both games together being listed at roughly 8 million units altogether {9}, less then either one of the two Half-Life Games. It's Metascore is shown to be 95 (close, but no cigar) {10}, and it's GameRankings Score is 95.16, {11} roughly 1 point higher then Half-Lifes, but below Half-Life 2 (Hey, I guess one score out of Eight isn't too bad).

Conclusion 1: As you can see, the entire Portal Series is quite below either Half-Life game, and it's score are almost entirely below the Half-Life Scores, and these scores are from the two major game ranking sites you can find. Clearly, Halflife is statistically better then Portal.

Case II: Gameplay Differences
Now Con has declared the Portal's superiority derives from it's puzzle solving and humour. Now let's ask ourselves if those are the only good genres. Obviously, the answer is no. Many games have proven that Comedy and Problem-Solving aren't the keypoints of games, in fact some have little if any. Most noticeably Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, with a metacritic Metascore of 92, {12} Battlefield 3 at 89 {13}, and Civilization IV at a whopping 94 Metascore {14}.

So what does Half-Life have? Well for starter, it's an FPS game, not a puzzle game, therefore the two cannot be compared by their puzzles (Judging a fish by it's ability to climb a tree after all). Half-Life includes the aforementioned FPS traits, but also includes other features not found in Portal. Most noticeably is the presence of other people, a trait many prefer to the seclusive nature of Portal (minus of course the presence of the GlaDos). Also of note is the abiliy to switch between various pieces of equipment.

A Major issue is that Half-Life is also very well known for it's Puzzle-Solving traits. As Con hasn't explained why exactly Portal's Puzzle-Solving is better then Half-Lifes, I am not certain what he considers good Puzzle-Solving, thus I'll leave this as is.

Case III: Relativity of a Good Game
It was touched upon earlier, but I'll point it out again just to highlight it. How good a game is depends on the player. One game can be considered by most to be amazing, and yet one person can hate it. And equally a game can be near universally hated, yet be someones favorite. Thus is only made worse by the fact that we are comparing a Puzzle-Solving based gamed to a FPS. It's largely like saying Age of Empires was horrible because it doesn't give you as high a jump as Halo.

Conclusion
Con would have you believe that we ca determine one games superiority between two highly popular games of different Genres. But we simply can't. Con may consider Portal better, but many out there (most certainly most) consider Half-Life better, and as superiority in a game is a matter of Opinion, not Absolutes, Portal cannot be shown to be, beynd a doubt, better then Half-Life
