First of all on the principle that the sawn off shotgun is not useful for hunting. This is not true. The sawn off shotgun would probably be excellent for hunting. It is not comparable to the deadliness of automatics. It is just a pistol like shotgun. It is great for home defense. And just like all gun control criminals still get them.

It has nothing to do with its functionality of a hunting weapon.

Sawing off the barrel of a shotgun alters the weapon in a way that was unintended. The reason sawed off shotguns should be kept illegal because these homemade alterations to a weapon could be dangerous to the user and surrounding people. You cannot just alter weapons to suit your needs because weapons are under strict legal scrutiny and control.

The same way that some cars are not "street legal" you cannot modify weapons in your own home and expect them to be legal.

I meant ones manufactured that way. Not homemade weapons.

The manufactured ones are already legal. So therefore, in order to be arguing that "sawn off shotguns should not be illegal" you must be talking about something which is already illegal which are the homemade ones.

"Under the National Firearms Act (NFA), it is illegal for a private citizen to possess a sawed-off modern smokeless powder shotgun (a shotgun with a barrel length shorter than 18 inches (46 cm) or an overall length shorter than 26 inches (66 cm)), without a tax-paid registration from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, requiring a background check and either a $200 or $5 tax for every transfer, depending upon the specific manufacturing circumstances of the particular sawed-off modern shotgun being transferred." [1]

So my argument stands. You didn't specify and since the manufactured ones are legal under certain circumstances you must be arguing for the homemade ones.

If not then you concede that you were wrong and therefore concede the debate.
