Honestly, who cares about Casey Anthony? Anyone? Who is she? Why is she on national news? She killed her daughter, yes that's a terrible thing, but there's stuff like this that happens every day! What makes this situation so special? Ill tell you what, NOTHING! She was an average citizen before all this crap came out about her. Now she has all of a sudden become a national celebrity for killing her daughter! Seriously? Has the world come to this? It takes killing someone to become a celebrity? PLEASE! Our country needs to learn what real news is, and what news people will actualy care about!

Thanks for starting this highly controversial topic.

I will defend the position that the mass media coverage of Casey Anthony (Tot Mom) is justified, and Con has already argued that it is not. I will only give my own arguments; they directly respond to my opponent's.

C1. The media has every reason to broadcast a crazy murder trial

A. We love drama

Survivor, Lost, and The Kardashians prove this with their massive television audiences and fanbase. In fact, look at any popular TV show and you will notice some semblance of drama in them. They attract audiences.

Criminal cases in particular are loaded with popularity. The OJ Simpson trial, filled with drama and countless twists and turns, was known as the "trial of the century" and are still talked about today.

B. The Casey Anthony case is no different.

What seperates the Tot Mom case from the rest is the sheer amount of drama and craziness in it. My opponent tries to say that "NOTHING" is different between this case and other murder cases. This shows me that he has not paid adequate attention to whats going on. There is a lot different from this case and others. For instance,

Two year old kid goes missing then is found dead

The accused was found partying in night clubs after her daughter went missing

The accused was found partying in night clubs after her daughter was found dead

The accused's parents pay 500,000 bail to get her out of jail, after she committed several crimes after her daughter's death

Sexual advances had previously been made to the two year old victim

Two year old victim is eventually found as a skeleton that had been scattered across the area

So this is not your average murder case. This is ridiculous, drama-filled Hollywood material. Clint Eastwood himself could not have made a more insane story. So dont try to say that this kind of thing happens all the time. Yeah, people get killed. But the circumstances are never like this.

C. So broadcasting the case is justified

Remember, TV stations operate for money, and to get that they need viewers. Since its been established that Americans flock to TV drama, its in the best interest of a news station to show the Casey Anthony/Tot Mom case until the people are burnt out on it.

C2. Broadcasting crime is good

A. Desensitizing evil

The media has come under fire because of its coverage of predominantly evil or unfavorable occurrences. We hear about murders, rapes, and thefts much more often than charities or real life heroes. The coverage of Casey Anthony is a symbol of this. But this coverage is actually a good thing, for two reasons.

First, broadcasting predominantly evil acts desensitizes us from the harshness of reality. For example, if we say the same word thirty times in a row, we become desensitized to it and the word becomes meaningless. In the same respect, the more evil we see on the news, the less interest we have in it because we see it all the time. The break-in at the local 7/11 becomes "just another crime". This is good, because by becoming desensitized to crime and violence, we "appreciate" it less and don't give it as much interest as we would if it were only showed once a week.

Second, broadcasting predominantly evil acts means that broadcasting good or heroic acts becomes the minority. This is also good. Remember, seeing something a lot causes us to become desensitized, just as pizza will become tasteless if we eat it for too long. So if news stations showed charities and success stories 90% of the time instead of crimes, we would become desensitized to the good things and would pay more attention to the minority of evil acts instead.

In short, seeing less good deeds means you appreciate them more when you do see them. The same is true for evil, so by showing murders on TV a lot (like the Tot Mom case), we dont appreciate them as much because we see them all the time. Thats good because we dont want to appreciate evil.

B. Casey Anthony

My opponent implies at the end of his speech that killing someone shouldn't make the news. But without bad news on the air to crowd out the good news, we would appreciate the good news less because we would hear about it all the time. With Casey Anthony gossip being given a lot of airtime, it is contributing to the desensitization of evil, which my argument shows is positive.

My opponent would later argue that killing her daughter has made Casey Anthony a celebrity, implying that this shouldn't happen. Turn this. Anthony may be a celebrity, but in no way is it benefiting her. Being famous had made her the punching bag of America's Most Wanted and Nancy Grace, who goes on constant rants about how stupid she is. She is constantly suffering media bashing and personal gossip, which has been made possible by her "celebrity status" of always being on the news. Justice is being done.

That should do for now.

I completely agree. I never understood why someone would all of a sudden become so famous for something like this. Remember Amy Fisher?

Could you please extend the time between each round to three days? I was going to take this to motivate myself to research the topic, which will take a bit of time. I'd gladly accept if you can do that.
