If you accept this debate without my approval, you automatically lose the debate. Please leave a comment if you wish to accept this debate. I am looking for a serious debate with someone who truly believes that theism has done more "good" than "bad" for humanity, not simply someone looking to argue the con position. I am game to argue on theism as a whole, or one of the three theistic regions specifically.

That being said, this debate will be 5 rounds, the first acceptance; second, opening arguments; third, rebuttals to opening remarks; fourth, responses to rebuttals; and finally, concluding remarks in the fifth.

Definitions:
Theism: Judaism, Christianity, Islam
Due to the subjective nature of "good, harm" and "more" I am open to conversing about definitions that we both agree on. Please message me to sort this out before opening remarks.

I look forward to a fruitful debate, and wish my opponent the best of luck.

I accept.
I propose that "harm" and "good" be defined in the utilitarian sense of the words, corresponding with negative mental states (i.e. suffering) and positive mental states (i.e. pleasure), respectively.

Alright it doesn't look like my opponent is going to come back. Not gonna put much effort into this... here's a general outline of what my case would have looked like:

C1) Psychological Need

People have an inherent psychological need for a source of meaning, purpose, hope, and "bigger picture" in their lives. Religion has effectively fulfilled that need for hundreds of thousands of years, and it does it far better than any alternative source of fulfillment, as demonstrated by the lower levels of happiness and contentment in atheists. Without religion, billions of people throughout history would have been deprived this fundamental sense of fulfillment. Such an enormous impact is nearly impossible to outweigh.

C2) Political Stability

The concept of monarchs receiving their power/status directly from God has preserved political stability for ages in societies all around the world, particularly in Europe and Eastern Asia. A clear historical trend can be drawn showing that as secularism became more prominent in the 18th and 19th centuries, this religious foundation for political stability was shattered, and the amount of domestic unrest around the world sky-rocketed. Without religion, domestic unrest would likely have been near its current rates throughout all of human history, and innumerable human lives would have been lost. Again, that sort of positive utility to society is virtually impossible to outweigh.
