Resolved : There Should Be A Constitutional Amendment Banning Gay Marriage

I will argue that there should not be a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

Definitions :
Should - must; ought (used to indicate duty, propriety, or expediency):
http://dictionary.reference.com...
Constitutional - pertaining to the constitution
Constitution - the system of fundamental principles according to which a nation, state, corporation, or the like, is governed.
http://dictionary.reference.com...
Amendment - an alteration of or addition to a motion, bill, constitution, etc
http://dictionary.reference.com...
Banning - to prohibit, forbid, or bar; interdict
http://dictionary.reference.com...
Gay - a homosexual person, esp. a male.
http://dictionary.reference.com...
Marriage - to join in wedlock (Webster's New World)
N.B. - any dictionary definition prior to 2005 will read to "unite as man and woman in holy matrimony" - or something to that affect. Later dictionaries will include multiple definitions.

Thank you for starting this debate.

I agree with all of my opponent's definitions, as proper conduct dictates.

I will now write my own constitution:

mongeese's Constitution:

{Preamble: I am mongeese, and I write this constitution. This constitution governs mongeese.

Article I
In any case in which mongeese wishes to amend this Constitution, mongeese may amend this Constitution in any way that he so desires, so long as he has approval from himself.

Amendments:
1. mongeese is part of Debate.org.
2. Gay marriage is banned.}

There should be a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, because mongeese desires such an amendment, and has approval from himself.

The resolution is affirmed.

Resolved : There Should Be A Constitutional Amendment Banning Gay Marriage
I negate the resolution

My opponent, Mongeese has created his own constitution yet agreed with my definition of constitution. Though Mongeese listed that he is in fact a member of Debate.org he did not list that this would be Debate.org's constitution, only the constitution of Mongeese.

In the definition of Constitution provided, it states, "the system of fundamental principles according to which a nation, state, corporation, or the like, is governed." http://dictionary.reference.com...... My opponent Mongeese, is neither a nation, state, or corporation. Despite the fact that my opponent states that the constitution governs Mongeese, he is neither of the aforementioned and therefore his constitution is irrelevant. In addition to this, a constitution, as previously defined also includes a simple set of principles which Mongeese has also failed to include.

Thus, Mongeese's constitution cannot be amended to restrict gay marriage.

Congratulations to Mongeese for his "ingenuity".

Ah, but I am like a corporation!

I am run by my brain, similar to a CEO or Board of Directors.
http://en.wikipedia.org...
http://en.wikipedia.org...
My mouth imports resources to the stomach through the esophagus...
http://en.wikipedia.org...
...so that the resources are broken down for either subsistence or work.
This work is then used to either continue to gather resources or perform tasks to give mongeese the profit of happiness.
My cells also behave like individual cities.
http://www.biopic.co.uk...
The human brain is often compared to computers.
http://faculty.washington.edu...

So, basically, I am like a corporation.

Therefore, I can have a constitution to govern myself.

Therefore, the resolution remains affirmed.

Even though the human brain is compared to computers and cells behave like individual cities they are neither computers nor cities respectively and therefore are completely irrelevant.

You may think you are like a corporation or find arguments in agreement with your statement, but you are not a corporation (Corporation: 1. an association of individuals, created by law or under authority of law, having a continuous existence independent of the existences of its members, and powers and liabilities distinct from those of its members.) Therefore you cannot prove your argument.

I never said I was a corporation.
I said that I am like a corporation.
This still fits with the definition of constitution, which says, "nation, state, corporation, or the like..."

"Corporation: 1. an association of individuals, created by law or under authority of law, having a continuous existence independent of the existences of its members, and powers and liabilities distinct from those of its members"
I am an association of cells, created by science, having a continuous existence even as individual cells die, only able to run with cooperation of said cells.
I am like a corporation.
Therefore, I can have a constitution.
My constitution allows me to have whatever amendment I want.

There should be a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, because mongeese desires such an amendment, and has approval from himself.

The resolution remains affirmed.

That was great. I advise that you re-instate this debate again, but specify which constitution you want to debate about next time. Such a detail is of great importance to the debate!

This site is comprised mostly of confused high school kids, beret wearing angsty coffee shop hang-around pseudo-intellectual college drop-outs, the 29 year old guy who filled my order wrong today at taco-bell and believes whole heartedly that he is much smarter than everyone around him, attention/cam whores that are too ugly to get attention anywhere but a debate site, and brainwashed wiki-pedos. I'm sure 95% of the debates on here are won by vote bombing - whether it's by sock-puppetry or cliques ensuring "members" win. This place is just barely above myspace.

Any and all framer's intent vanished when she defined constitution against it.

Giving this one to mongeese "never said I was a corporation.
I said that I am like a corporation.
This still fits with the definition of constitution, which says, "nation, state, corporation, or the like..." Sold.

It wasn't completely contradictory. She simply made the naive mistake of assuming that debaters on this website would, considering the capitalization of "Constitution," her own nationality, and the direction of every single gay marriage debate on this website, get the hint that this was to be at the VERY least a nation's constitution, though I think it more than fair to assume that this was the US Constitution.

Sure-- if you want to make inane and useless arguments about your own constitution, you could technically attempt this. That doesn't mean we all have to buy it. Bad form, man.

My opponent never made any framer's intent.

Why would a person use a definition that is completely contradictory to her intent?
