There should be curbs on Artistic freedom. Before start arguing about artistic freedom, one should know what really what art means. Art applies to all aspects of life. But what we see today is that new media gained attention and financial impetus by developing contents not welcome on the more established Media. When someone challenge them they put blame as it is their artistic freedom. Some recent examples are Salman Rushdi'es Book the "satanic Versus" triggered the Ayatholla Ali Khomeni to issue a Fatwa against him as the book hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims. IIndia M.F Husain, the so called "Indian Piccaso" painted BHARATH MATHA in nude and the angry activists forced him to go in Exhile.

when we point out the mistake they will say it is their artistic freedom. But no one can experiance undefined freedom, Freedom of free expression is an Utopian COncept

Thanks for posting this debate. I disagree with you, there should be no curbs on artistic freedom, as long as the artist's work does not violate the person or political freedom of another individual.

Before we get into this, as Cerebral Narcissist has indicated, you do need to define art. Since you didn't, I will provide a working definition we can use.

Art: the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects [1].

I am assuming that you mean by art, not a skill or craft, but the creation of aesthetic material. From this definition, we can assume that painting, writing, comedy, drama, and other media are artistic forms. Art conveys meaning through other means beyond direct language.

For me, this debate is inherently philosophical. My assertion that artistic freedom is absolute derives from the assumption that man is born free. There is no fixed moral order independent of humanity, and thus no judge of what art is "acceptable". Art should be curbed if its production threatens the liberty of another individual, but this point is independent of art itself, and thus irrelevant to our debate.

Your two examples, Salmon Rushdie and M.F. Husain, do not provide an argument for why art should be restricted. Are you saying that Rushdie should not have been allowed to publish his book? By what precept is Rushdie's ability to publish a work limited? True, Khomeini did issue a Fatwa against Rushdie because he found elements of the Satanic Verses offensive to Islam, but can any intolerance of art cause make that art worth banning? If one person is offended by the Bible, should it be banned?

If an artwork does not endanger someone, or violate liberty, by what right should it be banned? Intolerance is never justification to "curb" artistic freedom. Prove me wrong.

You have not defined art, there is a great risk that the person that takes this challenge will define art in such a way as to render your task impossible.
