Professional sports have a great impact on society today. They have become a powerful tool to bridge communities by bringing people together, giving communities a sense of civic pride, and providing thousands of jobs to their hosting cities. The fame and popularity of many professional athletes gives them the ability to influence their fans, including many children that admire and want to emulate their favorite players. Unfortunately, many of the past and present professional athletes have participated in or been associated with criminal activity, scandal, and misconduct. Many of these players have received little or no repercussions from the organizations that employ them. Players like Ray Lewis, Michael Vick, and Aaron Hernandez are among some of the professional athletes with a criminal past. Ray Lewis continued to play for and retired from the NFL after his murder trial. Michal Vick returned to the NFL as the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles after his release from prison due to a conviction of animal abuse related to an illegal dogfighting operation. The most recent example of this is Aaron Hernandez, the former tight end for the New England Patriots, was also charged with murder. Hernandez was released from the NFL after the murder charge, but was originally drafted into the NFL with a significant criminal history, including felony battery. The lack of responsibility and disciplinary action taken against certain players by their leagues has sent an image, to the public and to fans, that this type of behavior is tolerated and condoned. Professional athletic organizations need to impose stricter disciplinary action or terminate the positions of any players involved in criminal activity because of the great impact professional sports have on communities, the influences athletes have on the people of those communities, and the moral obligations associated with being a public figure representing highly publicized profession.

I humbly accept this challenge my young messiah.

When we look at athletes we have to understand that they are better than us. They are kings, and above the law. Jesus was crucified for what people thought were horrid acts, and the Jews were the ignorant ones. Society has become ignorant, there is nothing wrong with violence, God gave us the power to use violence, so what is the issue? It's not like these athletes are killing people.

The kings in charge of sports leagues only care about money, so crime doesn't matter when you can buy yourself out of prison.

I hate to use the "R" word, but you seem a little...racist. The people you mentioned, Aaron Hernandez, Ray Lewis and Michael Vick were not white. What about Roethlisburger? He raped people? What about Bellichek? He cheated. What about David Beckham? He cheated...On his wife. What you are saying is that the black people should be crucified while the white people get away for violent crimes, and God loves all races.

Debaters often confuse Pro and Con when the resolution is posed as a negative. The challenge argument makes it clear that Con is really favoring the resolution. The double negative error is a Spelling and Grammar fault.

Pro makes an unjustified charge of racism. I don't think it is a conduct violation, just a bad argument. It is not relevant to the debate topic, since the facts of crimes committed are not challenged.

Con should not have forfeited. That's a conduct violation, at least helping to offset Pro's conduct.

Micheal Vick and Ray Lewis did get a lot media attention. Now Aaron Henandez is the big thing. Roethlisburger has no charges on his record, that's not to say that others don't, but it is a technicality. I'm sure this technicality applies to a lot of other players who also shouldn't be considered in this debate. Pro, I think your racist claims are unwarranted and a testimony of your own misgivings.

@Josh_b & InfamousAim: You are both right. The "con" position was error that I made when I set up this debate, and for some reason I can't edit the debate to change it. I am very much for or "pro" harsher punishments and stricter disciplinary action against players that are involved in any criminal activity.

I agree with infamousaim. are you for players returning or against? because it appears that you are in contrast to the title of this post rather than in favor of it.

Could you clarify your position? From what you have written you seem to be in favor of stricter policies for athletes or that they should NOT be able to keep playing. However, you took up the con side, which resulted in a double negative. So, you should really be on the Pro side?
