Hello there, I am the con team, and I will prove why homework should be banned. But first, let me ask you a question.
Have you had any stress or difficulty from homework? I'm guessing you probably had. Precisely why homework should be banned.
1. Homework should be banned because of the enormous stress it gives students. If there is a lot of homework, it makes students work late into the night, and that could be unhealthy for them, and it could also disturb their studies, since they would be tired.
2. The work can always be done in class, so why let it be a burden on students go complete them at home?
3. The homework nowadays are usually done by computer, so it is both a waste of energy, and there is a chance that the student could get damaged eyes from staring at the computer screen to long.
So what do you think?

I thank Con for accepting this debate. I have stated that the first round was for acceptance only, so I was rather surprised to see that Con has already made his points. Nevertheless, I will do my best to rebut them and make my own points.

Rebuttals:
1. "Homework should be banned because of the enormous stress it gives students. If there is a lot of homework, it makes students work late into the night, and that could be unhealthy for them, and it could also disturb their studies, since they would be tired."
Here we are talking about an all-out ban of homework. Too much of anything, including homework, is harmful. However, giving too much stress to students and making them work late into nights with the reason being homework only occurs if homework is assigned in an overly large amount. Con states these negative effects under the assumption that too much homework has been given. This "over-assignmen" of homework can be easily solved b a few rules or laws.

For example, homework guidelines have actually been made. For Years Prep to 4, it is stated that homework will not exceed 30 minutes per day. For Year 5 it should take around 30 to 45 minutes per day, and for Year 9 45 to 90 minutes per day. There are many more details as to these guidelines. If schools or teachers do not follow them, it is merely a matter of law enforcement and should not lead to homework being banned as a whole.

According to a study by the National Center for Educational Statistics, white children actually spend only around 6.8 hours on homework per week, which is less than an hour a day.

2. "The work can always be done in class, so why let it be a burden on students go complete them at home?"
All students and teachers alike know that class time can be very much limited, and thus it is difficult to complete all work during class time, as the teacher has to set aside time for teaching, reviewing assignment, etcetera.

As quoted from Andrea Townsend, a science teacher at Ohio Dominican University, "I learned in college that hands-on work is the best way for students to learn, and that"s certainly true. However, it"s definitely not the most efficient way. So, if I"m going to offer interactive activities in class, I need students to put in some time and effort studying outside of class as well."

As quoted from Lisa Garner, an elementary school teacher, "Class trips, pep rallies, magazine drives, fire drills, lock downs, birthday parties, parent conferences, book fairs, H1N1 assemblies, class photos, and three day weekends are sucking up our precious class time like a sponge. As a result, many teachers feel pressured to send home unfinished class assignments for homework in addition to practice sheets to help improve their students" standardized test scores."

Firstly, I do not understand how Con thinks that homework being done by computer is a waste of energy. Practically everything we do, from playing soccer to watching TV, takes up energy. Again, while there is a risk of students getting damaged eyes from staring at the computer screen for too long, the underlying reason behind students or children staring at screens is usually leisure, such as watching TV or playing video games. Homework is not the major cause in this. It is stated that "vitamin A deficiency is the leading cause of childhood blindness, responsible for an estimated 70% of the 500,000 children who become blind each year" (Thylefors, N"grel, Pararajasegaram, & Dadzie, 1995; WHO 2010)

It is also stated that cataracts are the leading cause of visual impairment and blindness in young children. Cataracts are in turn caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunlight and other sources, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, smoking, prolonged use of corticosteroid medications, statin medicines used to reduce cholesterol, previous eye injury or inflammation, previous eye surgery, hormone replacement therapy, significant alcohol consumption, high myopia and family history. Using computers for too long is not a cause.

Again I must make it clear that the effects of doing homework on eyes can be controlled and greatly minimised through various measures such as taking short breaks and having a suitable distance (30cm) between the eyes and the homework/computer.

Points:
1. Homework causes a positive effect on academic achievement.
Two meta-analyses by Cooper and colleagues (Cooper, 1989a; Cooper, Robinson, & Patall, 2006) are the most comprehensive and rigorous. The 1989 meta-analysis reviewed research dating as far back as the 1930s; the 2006 study reviewed research from 1987 to 2003. Commenting on studies that attempted to examine the causal relationship between homework and student achievement by comparing experimental (homework) and control (no homework) groups, Cooper, Robinson, and Patall (2006) noted,'With only rare exceptions, the relationship between the amount of homework students do and their achievement outcomes was found to be positive and statistically significant. Therefore, we think it would not be imprudent, based on the evidence in hand, to conclude that doing homework causes improved academic achievement."

Paschal, Weinstein, and Walberg (1984) discovered through a meta-analysis of fifteen quantitative studies that homework did have a positive effect on achievement, especially in certain grade levels. Specifically, traditional, daily, and graded homework had the greatest positive impact on student achievement in the fourth and fifth grades.

2. Homework helps all-rounded development in a child's character
Corno and Xu (2004) call homework the job of childhood. By examining taped sessions and interviews with parents and students, they discovered that homework helped third graders learn responsibility and develop time-management and job-management skills. The students also learned to work on schoolwork when they did not want to and to adjust their attentiveness to the demands of a specific assignment. These and similar benefits, such as good study habits and independent learning, have been found by other researchers as well (Johnson and Pontius 1989; Warton 2001).

3. Homework has positive effects on parent-children relationships
Some researchers have found that homework has a positive effect on parents and families by allowing them to show an interest in their children's academic progress (Hoover-Dempsey et al. 2001). Balli (1998) discovered that when parents help their sixth-grade children with homework, the students believe they do better in school"regardless of how they feel about working with their parents.

4. It reflects a child's progress in learning
Homework allows parents to see how their children are being educated so they can develop a better idea of how they can help their child. It also allows teachers to see how individual students are progressing so that they will know which topics to cover more on.

5. Homework encourages students to learn how to work independently
While teamwork and interaction are important skills, when we grow up, we won't constantly have people by our side. There are times in which we have to work on our own. Homework encourages students to work more independently, as they will have to at college and in the future, their jobs. Everyone needs to develop responsibility and skills in personal organization, working to deadlines, being able to research, etcetera. Homework responsibilities allow these skills to develop. For instance, to read a novel or complete a research project, there is simply no time at school to do it properly. Students have to act independently and be willing to read or write, knowing that if they struggle, they will have to work through the problem or the difficult words themselves. Diane Ravitch points out that a novel like Jane Eyre (a classic piece that is essential for literature) cannot be completed if it is not read at home " students have to work through it themselves.

6. Homework allows students to learn beyond what is covered in lesson time
Homework is a method that can allow children to learn more about the topic, for example through projects which require in-depth research. Students can then have better knowledge and better grasp of the topic. There are only a few hours in each school day " not enough time to cover all subjects in an in-depth manner. Setting homework extends study beyond school hours, allowing a wider and deeper education. It also makes the best use of teachers, who can spend lesson time teaching rather than just supervising individual work that could be done at home. Education is about pushing boundaries, and the learning should not stop at the entrance to the classroom " students should take skills learnt in the classroom and apply them at home. Homework allows this to happen, encouraging students to go above and beyond what they do in school. Reading is the best example. Students learn how to read at school, but in order to get better, they need to practise and that is best done at home, with the support of parents and at the right pace for the student.

I will start by rebutting some of your arguments.
1. You said there are some laws limiting homework. Well, actually, students in year 7 or higher are assigned a rather large amount of homework, which can make them work at least 1 hour 30 min, and can reach up to 2 hours 30. Maybe even more.
2. You said some hands-on work is the best way for students to learn. Why not have something like a "study time" where it's basically the same thing as homework, but done in class? Also, this has another benefit because the teacher can take care of the matters like reviewing assignments, marking tests, etc.
3. I agree with you on the fact that homework is not the major cause on eyes going bad and being a waste of energy. But still, it is one of the aspects on causing those events, so why not stop it to prevent it at least a bit?

My Arguments:
1. All the work should be done in class because when assigned homework, students tend to do it without trying their best, since there is no supervisor, so it doesn't actually encourage students to learn how to work independently.
2. It takes up your time too much. People DO need some leisure time in their lives, and if you count school time, after school activity time, chores time, and homework time, it takes almost all the day.

I am glad to see Con's response.

My response to Con's rebuttals:
1. "You said there are some laws limiting homework"
This is true and solid evidence was given, whereas here Con simply says "Well, actually, students in year 7 or higher are assigned a rather large amount of homework, which can make them work at least 1 hour 30 min, and can reach up to 2 hours 30. Maybe even more." as an argument without citing any sources at all, thus this point is invalid.

2. "Why not have something like a "study time" where it's basically the same thing as homework, but done in class?"
As mentioned in previous rounds, class time is very limited and thus work has to be assigned for students to complete at home. As for the statement "Also, this has another benefit because the teacher can take care of the matters like reviewing assignments, marking tests, etc.", I am not too sure as to how Con imagines "study time" to have such benefits. There is no elaboration and no proof as to "study time's" usefulness.

3. "it is one of the aspects on causing those events, so why not stop it to prevent it at least a bit?"
With the same logic, reading, playing video games, watching TV, ecetera, should be banned too. This does not work. Instead of banning things that require concentration, we should educate children to have good postures while working and to have suitable distance between their eyes and reading material. Banning homework to avoid "eyes going bad" is simply hiding from the root problem (children not having good reading postures, etc) and will end up with the problem catching up with us some time later. It is also a rather futile reason to ban homework, especially since (and Con agrees) homework is not the major cause of "eyes going bad".

Rebuttals

I am assuming that there is a grammatical error in the statement and that the phrase is "because when homework is assigned". Contrary to what Con believes, most students actually try their best at homework. Despite what some think about today"s teenagers, most are pretty ambitious. They like challenges and enjoy the feeling of accomplishment that comes from getting good grades and pleasing their teachers and parents. Career ambitions or just a desire to excel at whatever they do are motivating. Anxiety"or fear"is also a significant motivator. Most students fear what might happen if they don"t do their schoolwork. They might be embarrassed in front of their classmates or afraid they are putting their future at risk, at risk of losing a scholarship or making their parents angry. Thus, students actually tend to do their homework with their best.

As mentioned previously, there are laws governing the amount of time spent on homework, so students do indeed have time to relax. According to ATUS results, full-time college students ages 18 to 24 spend the majority of their hours sleeping (9 hours per day), followed by 3.9 hours for education and 3.9 hours for leisure activities/sports. This shows that students actually have a significant amount of time allocated to leisure. The "education" category encompasses class time, as well as outside time devoted to research and homework. Leisure activities include arts and entertainment, social events and relaxing.

Thus, Con's point does not stand.

Con has actually ignored all of my points, only rebutting a few details in such points, not the core of the point itself.
