Pro

This is a poetry duel. Each opponent comes up with a new poem for every round, and then the audience votes on whose poems they believe were better.

I'll begin.

The Absent is Present

A dash here and a dot there,
What I see are words.
Five-thousand years ago
These words made sense to someone.
These characters would tell you what day it was
And show you the way to the market.
They'd race your eyes across the page,
Daring you to pronounce them wrong,
To ruin the delicacy they held....
It's gorgeous, the slender markings,
The way the lines move across the paper
As the dancer weaves upon a stage.
The secrets within the locked box
Are no different from the unknown letter.
Their contents are mysteries,
And are that way for a reason.
The hidden depths of the ocean floor,
Understood only to those who live there.
An ancient language,
Dead to all but those who once spoke it.

Great idea!

Here's my first entry:

Partly Cloudy

When Cloud and Sun fight
And Battlefield Sky is filled with their might
Vying for domination of horizons great;
We ask -- What shall be our fate?

Great long battalions, majestic and white
Trying to extinguish Castle Sun's light.
Volley after volley, they go back and forth,
Their battles resounding from the South to the North.

Full sun or full cloud, their ceasefires deem.
When victorious one or the other might seem.
But the battle goes on, for always they rally,
And with hit after hit rises the tally.

Locked forever in massive heavenly conflict,
As if mandated by some higher edict.
Sun and Cloud become good and evil in this, the inverse,
And the battle for Sky flares into a fight for the universe.

I can't say this was written spontaneously. About a month ago, in fact. Hope everyone likes it.

Again, I can't say this is a spontaneous effort. I wrote it on the shores of Kawishiwi Lake at the end of July.

Water

The vast, glistening expanse
Locked in eternal, rhythmic dance.
Sky's beautiful, fickle daughter
Not gas, not solid, but water.

The life-giving liquid of sorrow and joy;
Its changing mood and caprices play with us like a toy.
An unfirm foundation to our insignificant lives,
From St. Ives all the way to Maldives.

Titanic, Fitzgerald, how many thousands more
Driven and riven by sea on the shoals of death's door?
Yet how many battles, heights of human endeavor
Have been lost and won on the sea, in the past and forever?

Great Atlantic cries.
Sweet Gitchi-Gumi sighs.
Trackless Pacific shakes and moans.
Mediterranean makes kings, Baikal moans.
Water.

I'm sorry my "opponent" has missed the other two arguments :(. But I do applaud her for an interesting debate idea. I quite enjoyed that.

Falling Asleep

As the silent weight of darkness falls,
And the birds of night their sweet haunting calls
And the leaves laugh sleepily in the nocturnal breeze,
We shut our eyes and lie with ease.

After a long day spent under the sun,
My being calls for sleep with every ion.
Whether little or much I've done in a day
Attaining unconsciousness happens in much the same way.

Head centered on pillow, body prostrate on bed
My mind down the long tunnel of sleep is led
But before I follow, I think and muse
About the day's thoughts, fears, conversations, news.

Finally sleep carries me gently down
And thoughts leave my head as if I'm abdicating a crown.
I journey through the long dark hall
'Til I hear sweet morning's loud clarion call.

PRO should have worded the resolution better.

Gah! I had no clue someone took up this debate! I don't really use the email this account is attached to. I know, excuses, excuses. I'll stop making them.

Ah, well, it's my fault I missed out on something that could have been really fun. I concede to my opponent, and take responsibility for, well, not taking responsibility. ^_^

Oh, and I never got the chance to thank my opponent. Thank you! I'm glad it was a nice person, anyone else would've completely torn me apart for not making the arguments in time.]

Regardless of what the votes might ever say, Con won. (no pun intended)

I like theLwerd's idea.

And yeah... poems are better when they rhyme.

I might take this, just because I'm good at it.

Or I could argue that it is not a poetry battle. lmao

I bet people here will vote CON because PRO didn't rhyme. :(

I say there should be a rap battle debate. I don't personally like rap, but I would find it entertaining for two debaters to "rap" it out.

Yeah, I didn't think about the categories bit, it's a good idea to make sure it's completely random... Inevitably, the first category should be in the language area... is anyone willing to post the next two categories?

The problem is that Pro obviously has a few poems up their sleeve. I would take this debate on, but I don't have any random poems that I've written lying around (in fact I'm not much of a poet). A more democratic way of doing this in the form of debate would be to choose random topics for each poem to be about before each round, that way both parties have 3 days to come up with a new poem... or something... I dunno.

You are probably more of a connoisseur than me, but I quite liked it - not bad at all, in fact.

Good effort, but to me, it rubbed off as a little corny.
