Numerous studies have shown the many negative effects of timed testing on young minds. For example, Sian Beilock from the University of Chicago has shown that, when in the timed testing enviroment, the stress students experience decreases their problem-solving ability and renders them less likely to successfully complete a math problem. Furthermore, encouraging the robotic, memorized solving of problems almost entirely disregards critical thinking and curiosity, which are the purpose of mathematics.

You"re sitting there waiting, pencil ready, with a piece of paper face down on your desk. Maybe your heart starts to beat a little faster, maybe your hands shake a little. The teacher looks at her watch and says, "Class, you may start"now." Suddenly, the classroom erupts with the sound of papers being quickly turned over and the scratching of graphite pencils. You frantically make your way through row upon row of math problems, skipping the ones you get stuck on and moving to the next. You glance at the ticking clock. 4"5=20. 7"6=45"no wait 42. 8"8=64. After 60 seconds the teacher calls out "Time!" You put your pencil down and quickly scan the page to see if you can find any wrong answers. Shoot. There"s one. 7"9 is definitely not 53. Oh well. Nothing you can do about it now. You pass your paper up to the front of the room, a mixture of anxiety and relief flooding your 9-year-old body. At least it"s done for today. No more math facts until tomorrow, thank goodness. Another day in the wonderful world of mathematics! My ensuing roadmap will include first abrogating my opponents points and then divulging 2 of my own points into this debate,

My opponent stated that many studies show that timed math tests have a negative effect on students. My opponent talked a lot about how they cause stress and etc. However, stress is good if you take it correctly. In her speech, Kelly McGonigal mentioned a study that included 30000 adults. Each of them was asked "How much stress did you experience in the last year" and then, they were asked "What do you think of stress". Most of them thought of stress as harmful. Many of the people who found stress as an enemy, died. Therefore, its really about how a person handles stress, not stress itself.

First of all, timed tests in high school help teachers understand what the students need help on. Timed tests estimate the logical amount time needed to solve a problem. If a student isn't able to solve it in the given time, they have not yet mastered the material given in school.

Read "A Mathematicians' Lament" by Lockhart - THAT is what makes interest lost in mathematics, not just timed tests ;)
