This debate is over whether the resolution is a sane thing for Tom to say. Tom is a theoretical person, and we know the following about him:
-As a child, he enjoyed playing with Transformers toys. -He disliked Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen because he thought the plot was bad. My opponent is arguing that when Tom made that statement, he was necessarily right given what we know about him. I am arguing the opposite. ======== Contention 1: Transformers had no plot in the first place. Transformers originated as simply a toy. There was no story and no characters [1]. But even in later developments, it was centered around the toy: the television show, being mostly targeted at preteen children, lacked in the plot department. The original plot was very simplistic [2], [3] and was entirely designed to more effectively sell the toy. The story line is more comparable to Power Rangers than Citizen Kane. ======== Contention 2: Revenge of the Fallen shared many elements with the original storyline. I contend that the storyline was not ruined, as it was not changed enough to be ruined. The core characters remained essentially the same [4], [5], [6]; only Spike Witwicky was changed and then mostly just in name: his character remained heavily based on the original. ======== Contention 3: It is impossible to ruin Tom's childhood with a movie. It is a common fallacy that when you take something from Tom's childhood and then ruin that thing, it ruins Tom's childhood. There are two major flaws. 1. Ruining something in the present does not ruin it in the past. Time is linear; therefore, it is impossible to ruin something that has already happened. 2. Tom's childhood is not entirely based on Transformers; therefore, ruining Transformers does not ruin his childhood. At worst, it only ruins some aspects of his childhood. ======== Contention 4: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is a better product than most Transformers products. -Transformers toys are cheap pieces of plastic. -Revenge of the Fallen had much higher production quality than the animated television shows. Compare images [7] and [8] (from the movie; notice their high quality) to images [9] and [10] (from the animated series; of noticeably lower quality). -Revenge of the Fallen focused more on humans than previous Transformers stories. People, being human, tend to emphasize more with humans than with giant robots. Though giant robots are cool-looking, they are not adequate to advance a story. ======== [1] http://en.wikipedia.org...(toy_line) [2] http://en.wikipedia.org... [3] http://www.angelfire.com... The first movie didn't ruin my childhood but it was a waste of time.

Hardly. I've heard at least three people utter something very similar to the resolution, so it must be supportable somehow.
