What does the Bible say about male and female, masculinity and femininity?

The Bible says that God created man in his own image -- male and female he created them ( Gen. 1:27). This shows that there is only two sexes: male and female. This also means only two genders: masculine and feminine. In fact, this means only one sexual orientation exists: heterosexuality.Hence, only one sort of marriage (i.e. the heterosexual marriage). There exists no same-sex marriage in the original paradigm which God has created.

"For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh." Gen. 2:24 (NASB)

Below is the Pre-fall original Paradigm on Sex ,Gender and Sexual orientation configuration:

Male - XY choromosome ; male genitalia.
Female - XX chromosome /female genitalia.

Masculine -the state of being a male.Males* should follow male gender norm within contemporary culture ( 1 Cor. 11:14).Males* should not be effeminate ( 1 Cor. 6:9 KJV).
Feminine -the state of being a female. Females* should follow feminine gender norm within contemporary culture ( 1 Cor. 11:3-16).

Heterosexuality -those who are romantically attracted to the opposite sex.*

What is Gender Dysphoria?

Transsexualism is a phenomenon experienced by individuals who transition between either of the two major sexes, male and female, not due to social pressures or mental disorders, but due to an acute feeling of fundamental discomfort with the sex to which they have been assigned (gender dysphoria).

Gender dysphoria behaviours in children can include:

  • insisting that they are of the opposite sex
  • disliking or refusing to wear clothes that are typically worn by their sex and wanting to wear clothes that are typically worn by the opposite sex
  • disliking or refusing to take part in activities and games that are typically associated with their sex, and wanting to take part in activities and games that are typically associated with the opposite sex
  • preferring to play with children of the opposite biological sex
  • disliking or refusing to pass urine as other members of their biological sex usually do for example, a boy may want to sit down to pass urine and a girl may want to stand up
  • insisting or hoping that their genitals will change for example, a boy may say he wants to be rid of his penis, and a girl may want to grow a penis
  • feeling extreme distress at the physical changes of puberty

If you are a teenager or adult with gender dysphoria, you may feel:

  • without doubt that your gender identity is at odds with your biological sex
  • comfortable only when in the gender role of your preferred gender identity
  • a strong desire to hide or be rid of the physical signs of your sex, such as breasts, body hair or muscle definition
  • a strong dislike for and a strong desire to change or be rid of the genitalia of your biological sex

Without appropriate help and support, some people may try to suppress their feelings and attempt to live the life of their biological sex. Ultimately, however, most people are unable to keep this up.

Having or suppressing these feelings is often very difficult to deal with and, as a result, many transsexuals and people with gender dysphoria experience depression, self-harm or suicidal thoughts.

Neuroscience studies of transsexuals in recent years are increasingly suggesting that transsexuality is a biological phenomenon rather than a purely psychological one.

Gooren, L (2006). "The biology of human psychosexual differentiation". Hormones and behavior 50 (4): 589–601

Below is the post-fall paradigm on Sex, Gender and Sexual orientation configuration:

Male sex - male DNA;genitalia.
Female sex - Female DNA; genitalia.

masculinity - male gender identity
feminity - female gender identity

Sexual Orientations
heterosexual - romantically attracted to the opposite sex.
homosexual -romantically attracted to the same sex.
bisexual - romantically attracted to both sexes.

What we will debate about?

We will debate about the Biblical perspective on Transsexuality. Our debate challenge is centered on this.

If we'll handle the Scripture correctly as 1 Timothy 2:15 says there seems to be a biblical basis for Transsexuality as follows:

Which of the following logical premises with logical conclusions are the real facts?

Premise 1: Those with male’s body who desires to have sex with the same person having a male’s body because he felt that he’s a “she” is an obvious abnormality.

Premise 2: The mind of those sort of people are the one having abnormality.

Conclusion: Psychological treatment is a must for those people to make them normal.

Premise 1: Those with male’s body who desires to have sex with the same person having a male’s body because he felt that he’s a “she” is an obvious abnormality.

Premise 2: The body per se of those sort of people are the one which is not normal.

Conclusion: Medical treatment is a must for those people to make them normal.

Today, the former is dismissed in modern psychology and the latter is supported by modern science.

Based on this current fact, then we can conclude that sexual orientation not gender identity is the categorical prohibition in the Leviticus Law.

Premise 1: Leviticus Law is applied only to males having sexual intercourse with males ( Leviticus )

Premise 2: Leviticus Law against male-male intercourse.

Premise 3: People who are natural born eunuchs aren’t males but females in gender (i.e. transgender).

Conclusion: Leviticus Law is not against people with gender dysphoria but only against homosexual sex of males with heterosexual orientation.

Levitus 20:13 can only mean either of the following:

1) gay sex done by non-gay people.
2) gay sex done by gay people.

The former is clear on the text per se:

If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them. Leviticus 20:13 (NASB)

Now the question is why would non-gay people have homosexual sex?

We have a complete answer from Romans 1:18-32.They do it because of their religion.

The religious setting we're talking about here is in the context of temple prostitution, fertility god worship. This is clearly an IDOLATRY in the sense of worshiping false deities by homosexual sex.

1 Corinthians 6:9 shows this reality which is still condemned in N.T. times:

1 Cor. 6:9 (NIRV) Don't you know that evil people will not receive God's kingdom? ... Neither will men who are prostitutes or who commit homosexual acts.

1 Cor. 6:9 (NIV) Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? ... nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders

Cause(s) of Transexualism

1)Natural Cause: Biological ( post-adamic state)

2)Environmental Cause: Nurture ( of biological dispositions)

Scientific explanation of the cause:

Premise 1: Biological cause: Hormonal/ neurological (natural cause).

Premise 2: Psychological cause: natural cause inevitably nurtured the mind to specific gender ( man/woman)

Conslusion: Transexualism

Biblical Explanation of the cause:

Premise 1: God created each and every one of us in the womb ( Ps. 139:13)

Premise 2: This sort of creation is in line with the effects of sin because it is within the realm of Post-Adamic fall ( Gen 3, Rom 8:22,Jn. 9:2)

Premise 3: People who get attracted to same sex are not the same in gender ( Transsexualism)or people who get attracted to same sex have different sexual orientation (Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual) that heterosexuality.

Premise 4: There are only two sexes which is also two genders per se( man/woman) –Gen. 1:26-27).

Conclusion: Transsexualism is a medical condition because it is a birth defect per se.

IF Jesus' words in Matthew 19:12 about " eunuchs who were born that way" means the same thing as in his disciple's contemporary Philo in the 1st century and Christians in the 2nd and 4th centuries then it means that the case is resolved because these eunuchs are explicitly attracted to same sex.Ergo, the LGBT has its biblical support ( also as a back up supporting the biological etiology of it)and proof on the "we're born that way" reality.

Philo, On Joseph, XII. 58-60.

Clement of Alexandria, The Stromata, III. I. --NOTE that this only proves that homosexual attraction is present in the 2nd century but having the greater context both from the 1st and 4th century, we found out that homosexual attraction is not a sin and hence, saints ( i.e. christians) are accepted in the early church as the following historical evidence evinced:

Gregory of Nazianzus, Oration 37. XVI -XVII.

Decrees of the Ecumenical Councils, Council of Nicea, Canon 1, AD 325.

The New Testament acknowledges marriage as the sole authority of sexual unions. Outside marrige, no sexual relations is allowed. From the historical and biblical arguments I have presented, it shows that Transgender can biblically marry as well as the LGB.

Okay. There are a couple of things wrong with your references in your arguments so I will start with those.

First of all, 1 Corinthians 11;14 talks about a man having long hair and how it is a disgrace to himself. It says nothing about following male gender norm.

Next, 1 timothy 2:15 is about women bearing children. So your references about it being a biblical basis for trans-sexuality, is wrong. It says nothing about a males body who desires to have sex with another male.

Thirdly, an eunuch is a man who has been castrated, especially (in the past) one employed to guard the women's living areas at an oriental court.
In reference to the Bible: Natural eunuchs include those who are born with a physical defect, but they also comprise those who are born with no real desire for marriage or sex. Forced eunuchs are those who have been castrated for whatever reason. Voluntary eunuchs are those who, in order to better serve the Lord in some capacity, choose to forego marriage. God calls some people to remain single (and therefore celibate). Paul speaks of those who serve the Lord in their unmarried state in 1 Corinthians 7:7"9.

COMPRISE: consist of; be made up of.

Fourth: Levitus 20:13: They are not saying that the man is not gay. They are saying if you lie down with a man like you would lie down with a women (meaning if you would perform intercourse). If it meant what you said it would be put as so: "if there is a man who lies with a male who lies down with a woman...." but it says AS THOSE.

Fifth: Romans 1:18-32 say nothing about them doing it for their religion. It is saying that God gives them up to what they want because they refuse to listen to Him about what is right.

Sixth: Romans 8:22 again takes of childbirth...not about sexuality and attractions of a man and a man or a woman and a woman. or even of a man and a woman!

Seventh: Jon 9:2 talks about a man being born blind because of a sin of his mother or father. Again, talks nothing about sexuality.

If you are going to argue that the Bible claims that transsexuality is right, then you need to reference the Bible accordingly.

Now to my actually rebuttals about your arguments:

The Bible does not have an explanation of the cause of Transsexualism. Let me explain.
Your number one thing was that God created each and every one of us in the womb. Ps. 139:13
Because God created us in the womb, and God is perfect and makes no mistakes, it does not explain why someone would change what God has made perfectly.

You often times talked about men having sex with men or women having sex with women. That has nothing to do with transgender. So everything you have argued about homosexuality holds no ground. (So that cuts all of your arguments down to a few sentences in reality.) For this reason I can not have too many rebuttals because you did not give me much to go on for the actual debate. if we were debating homosexuality you hold great points, however that is not what the topic of this debate is.

The last thing I have to say is that you trail off onto different topics. While you may think you are on the same topic, it is a little different. So I ask that you try to remain with the topic at hand. (So your last sentence "From the historical and biblical arguments I have presented, it shows that Transgender can biblically marry as well as the LGB" holds no value because we are not talking about marriage, we are talking about whether or not trans-sexuality is a sin.) Also, you are pro for trans-sexuality not being a sin, please plan your arguments accordingly because they often times stray to being a con. (actually a lot of the time they stray to being a con.)

Also, effeminate means: having or showing characteristics regarded as typical of a woman; (This goes up to another one of your mistaken references but I am putting it here instead to make a point about how many references have been wrongly put. in 1 Corinthianss 6:9 it says "Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men." When you referenced this your sentence said "Males* should not be effeminate ( 1 Cor. 6:9 KJV)." If you reread what I have just put up above, you can clearly see it says nothing about a man showing characteristics normally held by a woman.

Debate Round No. 1

I thank Con for accepting my debate challenge.

First of all, Con failed to grasp the references that I have used. Therefore, there is a need for me to clarify those.

It is true that the word 'effeminate' (1 Cor. 6:9 KJV) could mean other things but other commentaries such as that of Dr. Alban Douglas interpreted it as a reference to effeminacy. In any contemporary culture, males should be masculine. There's always a gender norm to follow.1 Cor. 11:14 is an example of that reality.

1 Cor. 11:14 talks about a man having long hair and how it is a disgrace to himself due to the Corinthian culture in the contemporary time and place he lived. It is called un-natural (not normative) in first century Corinth. This is clearly about following male gender norm.

Regarding 1 Tim. 2:15, I should have quoted 2 Tim. 2:15. The reason why I reference 2 Timothy 2:15 is that my introduction speaks of the Bible.

You said:

"Natural eunuchs include those who are born with a physical defect, but they also comprise those who are born with no real desire for marriage or sex."

"Those who are born with no desire for sex is called asexual. It is a sexual orientation together with heterosexuality, bisexuality and homosexuality.

Natural eunuchs includes those who have same sex attraction (Homosexuality) as well as those who have different gender identity (Transsexuality):

Philo ,a first century Jew, knew that a man who is natural eunuch does not have sexual desire to a female ( Philo, On Joseph, XII. 58-60).This shows that the eunuch by birth in Matthew 19:12 means men who does not have sexual desire to a female.

Clement of Alexandria provided a complementary perspectiveabout the born eunuch, by way of quoting the Basilidian Christians with respect to the gospel verse about eunuchs (Stromata 3.1.1):

Some men by birth have a nature to turn away from women, and those who are subject to this natural constitution do well not to marry. These, they say, are the eunuchs by birth.

The Basilidians included those who are unfortunately castrated under eunuchs by compulsion, in opposition to eunuchs by birth.
In another context (Pedagogue 3.4.26), Clement himself warned Christian householders against entrusting their wives to eunuchs, because "even these are panders: they will neglect their duties and serve pleasure without suspicion, because of the common belief that they are not able to enjoy love. But the true eunuch is not the one not able, but the one not desiring to make love."Note that as a Christian who despised all manner of effeminacy in men, Clement was not even considering homosexual sex here. When Clement said true eunuchs did not desire to make love, he obviously had in mind sex with women.

Leviticus 20:13 is against homosexual sex not homosexual orientation.Romans 1:18-28 proves this.

Rom. 1:18-28: The natural use of the female body and the natural use of the male body is heterosexual sex for heterosexual orientation. The sin of the Romans is the worship of creatures whose form is like birds, reptiles and even humans (Idolatry). This caused God to let them dishonor their bodies through homosexual sex. This act of worship is specifically called Temple Prostitution.

"Idol worship, such as the golden calf in the wilderness (Ex. 37), flared up again. Spurious gods of Canaan were plentiful. El was the supreme Canaanite deity, a god of uncontrolled lust and a bloody tyrant, as shown in writings found at Ras Shamra in N. Syria. His name means "strong, powerful."

Baal, son and successor of El, was "lord of heaven," a farm god of rain and storm, his name meaning "lord, possessor." His cult at Phoenicia included animal sacrifices, ritual meals, and licentious dances. Chambers catered to sacred prostitution by men and women (cf. 1 Kin. 14:23, 24; 2 Kin. 23:7).

Anath, sister-wife of Baal, also called Ashtoreth (Astarte); patroness of sex and war, was called "virgin" and "holy" but was actually a "sacred prostitute."

-The MacArthur Study Bible, Thomas Nelson, 1997, note on Judges 2:12.

This fact is also evident in the Corinthian religio-cultural reality:

1 Kings 15:12

He banished the male and female shrine prostitutes from the land and got rid of all the idols his ancestors had made.

And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made.
1 Cor. 6:9
have ye not known that the unrighteous the reign of God shall not inherit? be not led astray; neither whoremongers,
nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor sodomites.

Rom 8:22 shows that all creation is affected by the original sin. The result of the original sin like defects, disorders, diseases and death. The inclusion of Transsexuality is evident due to the fact that it is a birth defect [ neurological in nature]. In fact, it is categorized as a psyhcological disorder called 'gender dysphoria.'

John 9:2 shows an example of a birth defect. The man who's born blind didn't choose his defect ( Blindness).Likewise, the man who is born with gender dysphoria didn't choose his defect ( Transsexuality).

God does not always make perfectly.Birth defects do exist.Think of the intersex people. The reason is that humans procreates. Both God and humans synergistically works together to form a new soul - a new human.

I apologize to Con for the inclusion of homosexuality and marriage.I now would duly focus on:

Transsexuality & the Bible

Transgenders are people who have gender dysphoria. The word 'transgender' is a compound word. It came from two Latin words "trans" (meaning "on the other side of') and 'genus' (meaning " kind").Simply put, a transgender is someone whose gender identity is on the other side of gender( e.g. transgender woman: female in gender identity/male in sex ).In other words, a transgender is someone whose gender identity is different from one's natal sex.

Sex - it is what's below (i.e. one's genitalia) - whether male or female ( Biology).

Gender identity - it is what is in the brain. It is one's Identity - whether male or female ( Psychology/Neurology).
A female transgender has a female gender identity and a male sex while a male transgender has a male gender identity and female sex.In other words, a female transgender has a female mind with a male body while a male transgender has a male mind with a female body.

The English word 'Dysphoria' is from the Greek word "dysphoros" ( meaning "difficult to bear").The Bible tells us " The human spirit can endure in sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear? ( Proverbs 18:14). People with gender dysphoria have a severe discomfort with their gender identity or sex.Proverbs 18:14 tells us that we can survive with a physical illness but a broken spirit ( a mental illness) is portrayed as difficult to bear. This verse perfectly describes transgenders.

Gender Dysphoria is the formal diagnosis used by psychologists and physicians to describe people who experience significant dysphoria (discontent/ discomfort) with the sex and gender they were assigned at birth.

Gender identity disorder is classified as a medical disorder by the ICD-10 CM[7] and DSM-5 (called gender dysphoria).

Gender dysphoria is discomfort, unhappiness, or distress due to one's gender or biological sex. The current edition (DSM-5) of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders uses the term "gender dysphoria" in preference to "gender identity disorder". DSM-5 introduces the term "gender incongruence" as a better identifying and less stigmatising term.

"No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it..." ( Ephesians 5:29 NLT)

A Trans woman hates the masculine part of her body (i.e. genitalia) because of the feminine part of her body ( i.e. brain) or vise versa.

She is uncomfortable with her own body because her mind is 100% female while her body is 90% male ( 10% female part of the body due to neurology - brain and 90% male body due to genetics - Genitalia and Genes) .

This discomfort makes her hate her own body -- either hate towards her own brain or hate towards her own appearance.

Eph. 5:29a is specifically a reality for those who are normal people ( cisgenders). It does not include transgenders.

A trans woman has a psychological disorder known as gender dysphoria. As there is no cure yet for this mental illness the current available treatment for this are as follows: hormone replacement therapy, sex reassignment surgery and facial feminization surgery.

This triple treatment for the diagnosis of gender dysphoria is duly permitted within a Biblical perspective.

Premise 1:Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.
3 John 1:2 (NASB). Gender Dysphoria is a psychological disorder. The inclusion of mental health in 3 John 1:2 is undeniable.Bodily Health includes ways of prevention, treatment and cure of any underlying disease (sickness) and disorder (defect) -- whether mental or physical health.
Premise 2: You say, "I am allowed to do anything"--but not everything is good for you. You say, "I am allowed to do anything"--but not everything is beneficial.1 Corinthians 10:23 (NLT). Medical treatment is a good treatment for people with gender dysphoria.
Premise 3: Both Science and Psychology tell us that medical treatment is good for those who have gender dysphoria.
Conclusion: Medical treatment for gender dysphoria is not against any Biblical principle.

The Bible told us that "a peaceful heart leads to a healthy body"( Proverbs 14:30 NLT). People with gender dysphoria does not have inner peace and as a consequence, they couldn't have a healthy body due to the mental disorder which afflicts them. The Bible told us that " if one part of the body suffers, all the parts suffers with it..."(1 Corinthians 12:26).The presence of other disorders such as depression culminates to suicidal thoughts and attempts reflecting the profundity of gender dysphoria. The Bible told us that "a sad heart reflects a broken spirit" ( Proverbs 15:13 ISV ).
