Pro Let a = b. Then a^2 = ab. Subtract b^2 from both sides. Then a^2-b^2=ab-b^2. Use difference of squares. (a+b)(a-b)=b(a-b) Divide both sides by (a-b). Then a+b=b. Now let a=1, then b=1. Substitute a=1 and b=1 into a+b=b. Thus 2=1.Report this Argument Con That would work amazingly..... except for one small flaw. Who can remember back to grade school and tell me what the teacher said about dividing my 0? Oh... you can't. -.- Therefor lets look at your logic line by line. a = b (sure) a^2 = ab (aight) subtract b^2 from both sides a^2 - b^2 = ab - b^2 (thats fine....) use difference of squares (a+b)(a-b) = b(a-b) (swell....) divide both sides by (a-b) oh wait..... we already defined a=b so what is this going to result in? (a-b) = 0? You can't divide by 0 therefor this step can never be done. So as an answer to your argument..... Under the laws of mathematics 2 does not equal 1. In conclusion your equation has a domain of all real numbers providing that a does not equal b.Report this Argument

I remember seeing this exact argument in my geometry textbook.

However, Yrael said that under the "law of mathematics" 2 is not equla to 1. How eloquent a proof is that? It's like saying God does not exist because under the rule of cosmics, God does not exist. God forbid, people voted for him!!!

I can't believe that Jackie-Chan got any votes in this so called "debate". Yrael mathematically proved Jackie wrong (which means no ifs ands or buts). Some people need some math help?

Wow, this is amazingly enough absolutly pointless.

there's another problem... supposing for a moment you did in fact get rid of the (a-b) on both sides, you're left with (a+b) = b. Substitute, and you get (a+a) = a, which is clearly an impossibility for an a that is not zero.
