This debate is about USA being a christian nation. I am against this idea and USA is a place of diversity. Con must place his arguments within the first round.

How is the USA not a Christian nation? It was founded as a Christian nation, first of all. Second of all, according to a PEW survey over 3/4's of the USA's population is Christian.

First of all, I mentioned for you to post your arguments in the first round. What you said is too weak to be an argument so technically you forfeited round one. And now without further ado, I shall present my arguments to prove USA isn't a christian nation.

A. The Constitution

The US Constitution is a set of rules in which we must run under. The constitution is the highest form of law and we can't violate the constitution. The first ammendment US constitution guarantees freedom of press, expression AND religion. [1]

Quote from the Consitution:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

This ammendment says that we can not establish a religion or prohibit people from practicing a religion. Because the first ammendment says we have freedom of religion, US can not simply be a Christian nation. If USA was a Christian nation, Christianity would be the only religion allowed. However, the constitution guarantees that people have the right to practice any religion they like. There are millions of people living in USA who practice Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism and ect.

The part where it mentions "establishment of religion" is the basis of Seperation of Church and State. This would mean that the Church has no influence over the state what so ever. The Constitution never said USA was a Christian nation anywhere either. It contains no references to Christianity, God or Jesus.

B. USA was never founded as a Christian nation

Many key founding fathers of the USA never supported USA as becoming a Christian nation. They had opposed mixing Church and State, they understood how Chrisitian governments in Europe previously had violated freedom. Many of the founding fathers were not in fact Christians but were deists. [2] [3]

The founding fathers never wanted a Christian nation, they wanted a multi-faith society where anybody is allowed to practice any religion they want.

C. The dominant religion is not supposed to impact state

While it is true around 75% of americans are christians, that does not mean US is a christian nation. If US were a christian nation, that would mean everybody must follow Christianity. However, people are allowed by law to follow any religion they like, and to even not follow a religion.

D. Quotes from the founding fathers on seperation of Church and State [4]

These are some quotes by founding fathers on seperation of Church and State. This pretty much debunks your argument on USA being founded as a Christian nation.

"We have abundant reason to rejoice, that, in this land, the light of truth and reason has triumphed over the power of bigotry and superstition, and that every person may here worship God according to the dictates of his own heart. In this enlightened age, & in this land of equal liberty, it is our boast, that a man’s religious tenets will not forfeit the protection of the laws, nor deprive him of the right of attaining & holding the highest offices that are known in the United States.” ~~ Letter to the members of The New Church in Baltimore, January 1793" ~ George Washington

"The Government of the United States is not in any sense founded upon the Christian Religion.” 1797, The Treaty of Tripoli, initiated by President Washington, signed by President John Adams, and approved by the Senate of the United

"… I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free

exercise thereof,’ thus building a wall of separation between Church and State.” ~~ Letter to the Danbury Baptists, January 1, 1802 by Thomas Jefferson

“The civil government … functions with complete success … by the total separation of the Church from the State.”
~ Writings, 1819 by James Madison

“If I could conceive that the general government might ever be so administered as to render the liberty of conscience insecure, I beg you will be persuaded, that no one would be more zealous than myself to establish effectual barriers against the horrors of spiritual tyranny, and every species of religious persecution.” ~ George Washington

@triangle.128k I'm sorry, but I can't debate right now because I'm currently in the pre-debating stage on another topic with someone else. Perhaps, we could debate some other time.

Hello everyone! Sorry about not posting anything in regards to this debate. I was extremely busy during the period of this debate. I apologize to con for not responding. I should've denied con's request to debate in the first place, knowing that I would be busy. Again, I apologize for wasting your time.

It seems like the meaning of the topic should have been explained. I thought you were referring to religious demographic in the USA at first.
