I am a vegetarian, and in looking at people's profiles I noticed that a lot of people seem to be against vegetarianism. Would someone who is against it please debate me on this and explain why? I don't understand how you can be against people choosing not to eat animals.

I don't think that is so much being against vegetarianism or those who are, but at least for me it's partially about PETA, which has not been the most peaceful organization of late. It may also be that they themselves are not vegetarian and do not feel it is the place of those who are to initialize attacks about how everyone else should be. This is not saying someone has a vendetta against vegetarianism or for that matter hate animals or approve of animal testing. It is a personal choice and not something a piece of legislation can cover or that has much to do with a person's political choices. This, together, makes it hard for any one person to make a general comment about everybody.

I guess the problem is maybe with the way they phrase it- vegetarianism is not necessarily connected with PETA, and its not clear whether the issue is vegetarianism or legislating vegetarianism. Althogh I'm a vegetarian, I would be against a law against eating meat as unconstitutional. Yes, the animals people eat should be killed humanely, and that can be legislated, but vegetarianism should be a choice.
Thank you for answering, and I don't think I really have anything to debate with you.

Thank you, no problem. I think it is the way they phrased it and I agree with you. Though I eat meat, I would have a serious issue with outlawing vegetarianism.

yeah the problem about this site though is that it only gives you the choice of pro or anti vegetarianism

i chose against it because i eat meat, but i am all for people who are vegans or vegetarians

i think that vegetarianism is a noble stance and i admire it, but i need meat to live lol

The problem is the way that the site phrases the "BIG issues" - I think it's implied that pro means "I support vegetarianism," and con means "I don't think there's anything wrong with eating meat."

I give the debate to thegreats, though, since you clearly stated why so many people say they're against "vegetarianism" on this site -- because it is connected with "PETA" here.

It really is an odd issue on the issues board.

haha. I know. I was just pointing out what an understatement it was and how truly absurd such a law would be.

Me, personally... I can't bring myself to say I'm "against" the issue "vegetarianism/PETA," although I am not a vegetarian, I do not think it is a wise choice, and PETA is not a group I would want to be a member of.

The reason I can't bring myself to say "against" is that I certainly support the rights of vegetarians, vegetarianism might be "right" (or at least "right" for some people), and even though I disagree with much of what PETA says, I support its right to exist. There are hardcore conservatives, for example, who say things like "The ALCU should be hung for treason!" so when asked if you're "for" or "against" an organization, I have a hard time saying I'm "against" any group.

I even agree with many of PETA's beliefs. But like most groups in the post-New Deal U.S., their methods are wrong. They should be promoting awareness of their beliefs and encouraging individuals to adopt them, not promoting legislation, especially not at the federal level.

The pro side of this argument is a good representative of voluntary, non-coercive, individualist vegetarianism.

Well, I think you go uncontested in your remarks. It would be outrageous. My word choice was just a mild explanation and a slightly sarcastic comment toward the debate of vegetarianism vs. not. I would have a humongous issue with a law like that.

Haha. You would have a "serious issue" with outlawing vegetarianism? How exactly would such a law work? Would all vegetables and fruits be eradicated? Would there be a War on Vegetables to rival the War on Drugs? Or would everyone be force-fed meat?

I think "serious issue" is far too light of a response. I have a "serious issue" with seatbelt laws. A law outlawing vegetarianism would probably be the most autocratic act by a government in the history of civilization.

I too am not against vegetarianism...however, I do get irritated with the ones who become so fanatical that they start attacking my preference to eat meat. It seems that some have made it a sort of "religion".
