Everytime there is a tragedy like a school shooting, everyone looks for the reasons. For example, Columbine or Virginia Tech--a lot of blame was put on the violent media that these kids tended toward as a source for their anger.

I believe that violent media is not a source. I think people gravitate towards a certain type of media. If you are a sociopath, you are probably more likely to enjoy hardcore violent action flicks than a romantic comedy.

As an analogy: I am a liberal mostly, so when I hear Rush Limbaugh talking, I turn off the radio or change the station. The only reason I would keep it on is to make fun of him or refute him.

A person who has it in them to go out and shoot up a mall probably enjoys games where you shoot people, but that does not mean that the video game makes people go out and shoot people or even believe that is right.

I think instead, the violent behavior is developed by the situation in which a person' grew up (family life and how those at school treat them) as well as how the media glorifies killers. I do not know the names of the Columbine or Virginia Tech or Nebraska mall victims, etc, but I do know the killers name. Cho Seung Hui sent videos to CNN about how he was a martyr, Robert Hawkins said he would be a celebrity-- and its true. We focus so much on the killers and so little on the victims (except in numbers) that someone who had a rough childhood, has violent tendencies and craves attention is much more likely to go out and kill a bunch of people than a kid with a stable family and school life who plays video games and loud music.

Numerous studies have been done and it has been found that after playing violent video games, listening to violent music and watching violent movies the children involved have become more violent. The books may be the tools they used to find ideas on how to release their violent instincts. (I personally feel books do not do so)

Also, you argued that violent people are attracted to violent forms of entertainment. There was a study on this and it was found that the most violent were worst affected by the violent entertainment. This means that the violent become even more violent. So you are right that the violent people are attracted to the violent forms of entertainment but this means they still become more violent.

Which studies are you referring to? Unfortunately I can't refute them all that well except to ask if these studies also took into account a person's
1) Home life- are the children who turn out violent from a wide variety of backgrounds or are they from predominately poor backgrounds/abusive homes?
2) School life- are the children who turn out violent from a wide variety of school 'niches' or do they tend to be loners (and not by choice)?
3) Psychological problems- are the children who turn out violent/more violent suffering from issues like mild schizophrenia, anger management, social issues, etc?

Because there was no response, I guess I'll leave it at that since I already said my arguments. Yeeep.

I do think violent videogames, movies, books and music DO "contribute" to violent behavior, but I think there are more things that factor into it. arrivaltime definitely earned my vote.

arrival you've got my vote. Even if he did generate these alleged studies, they wouldn't prove that it was the video games/music/movies that were contributing to the violence. I think some people are inherently more aggressive and violent so they seek out violent video games and movies... this doesn't suggest that there is a cause and effect relationship.

From the horror movies, mostly.

No, not measurable as to how violent they are. I don't disagree that the average 18 year old doesn't feels the effects but how they handle it is different.

Most 18 year olds know there is a lot of violence in the world, many enjoy violent video games, but only a few go on really violent rampages. Those who do usually have a history of being neglected and abused. To not heavily put the blame on their upbringing and their psychological state of mind when they watched or took part in the violent media is ignorant, in my opinion.

thanks :)

bcal, on abortion i'm on the fence so any debate would probably not be fun for you.

Civil unions I could do, except you're also for gay marriage so I have an idea that the debate would be short and we'd agree on a lot of points. Tobacco rights I would also be interested in!

Arrivaltime, I like your opening argument. This is a very interesting topic.

OK, how do you feel about Abortion? I'm against it. I could debate you on Missle Defence systems, Civil Unions, or Tobacco rights. I'm not very passionate about any of them, so if you can come up with a better one, please do.

You know I just went back and put "against police profiling"? I thought police profiling was something else, hah! That's my blonde moment of the day.

I do not wish to challenge you on this topic because I mostly agree with you, however I would really like to challenge you on police profiling. I would be con since you are in favor of it.
PLEASE debate me :)
