Nelson Mandela is often seen as the Nobel Peace Prize winning inspiration to people for standing up against apartheid and spent many years in prison. Mandela used explosives/ bombs to blow up buildings before his sentencing and in modern times we would view that as terrorism because they were deliberate attacks. I understand he was fighting oppression but it wasn't exactly "peaceful." Take a look at the Dalai Lama and the other Buddhist monks in Tibet when China invaded. They believe it is better to be killed than killed and many set themselves on fire to protest against the Chinese forces and the others became refugees. They didn't advocate violence and were as peaceful as possible when their country was invaded. So is Nelson Mandela really a hero, in theory he is a terrorist.

You are talking about the history of Nelson Mandela. But you can also look at what he did after his prison time. He included whites in the government. While all the blacks were trying to exclude blacks from the government, he included them. He made peace with white people. If Nelson Mandela wasn't there, than South Africa would still segregate white people. He was a hero to black people in the 40s, and he was a hero to all races after his prison time.

Well.. ..My opinion is that armed struggle does not prevent one from being a Hero. Heroes often kill people to achieve their goals. The real question is to know if heroes even exist in real life ?
I do agree that awarding Nobel Prize to armed fighters is an absurdity. He did have some time to become a better man while serving in jail though.
Also propaganda machine made him look way better than he really was. And everyone believes the media... when he died even 13 years old girls were glorifying him on face book...

Anyway I'm looking forward to reading this debate

Reasons for voting decision: Calling Mandela a terrorist based on things that he did a long time ago, that would be considered acts of terrorism by some groups, is just wrong. The fact that he did some irrational and regrettable things in his younger years should not overshadow what he did after he served his time. He did incredible things for race relations in South Africa and, depending on one's definition of a hero, he deserves the title far more than most of the people who receive that title today (ie. many athletes and celebrities). Con's argument was better, though Con had a few spelling/grammar issues.
