Please begin your argument.

I accept your debate, I will be laying out a simple argument here in the first round.

Agricultural policies

Today Russia is the worlds 5th biggest producer of grain [1], during Stalin's reign up to 11 million starved to death because of botched agricultural policy [2].

Military Policies

Stalin's strategy for the second world war was to send as many men towards the enemy as possible, this is why many time more Russian's than necessary died in WW2 [3].

Because the USSR was not ready for war, the USSR's troops were spread thin and there was little resistance at the border. When the Germans invaded (and broke a peace agreement between the USSR and Germany), the USSR could not move troops fast enough so there was no other choice. Simply put, this is what happened: There are 50 Germans and 50 Russians, but the Russians are spread far apart, so the 50 Germans are only facing 2-3 Russians at a time.

There was no other choice.

"during Stalin's reign up to 11 million starved to death because of botched agricultural policy"
Yet even after that, and the second World War, the population continued to grow. The population in 1953 (when Stalin died, ending his reign) vs. the population in the mid 1920's (when Stalin came to power) is higher. By the end of Stalin's reign, despite the fact that there was a world war, the population had gone up several million.

From 1928 to 1937, the Russian national income rose from 24 billion rubles to 96 billion rubles. That is an enormous, positive change which came during Stalin's reign.

As a result of education reforms, Stalin brought the illiteracy rate from 50%, to 20%. He also increased transportation be building many new railroads all across the country, including the Turkenstan-Siberian railway.

Under Stalin, women were given equal rights and opportunities. Advancement in the healthcare field led to the rise of the average Russian lifespan.

Stalin industrialized the USSR, making it a world superpower. Industrialization also gave the USSR a chance against the Germans, to out-produce them. They did this very well and as a result, Moscow was not captured, the Battle of Stalingrad was not lost, the Battle of Kursk was not lost, and the Germans did not win the war.

I believe that Stalin was a great leader, considering that he brought Russia from poverty and turmoil to greatness.
Thank you for the good debate.

You must understand, I am arguing whether or not he was a good LEADER, not how good/moral of a person he was. I am arguing that he brought the country to new heights.

You should be asking if he was an effective leader. He certainly wasn't good. I would gladly debate you on whether he was good or not.

Good leader=A leader who was successful and brought the country to new heights. (Also consider HOW the leader got to those heights).
Bad leader=A leader who was unsuccessful and made his/her country less influential or powerful.
