We (American government) should defund Planned Parenthood.
Debate Rounds (4)
I would like to wish my opponent to best of luck, and lets have a good debate.
Planned Parenthood has been shown to be selling body parts and tissue from aborted babies (1). We as a country can not support this monstrosity. All other services that Planned Parenthood provides are provided by local health clinics.
Also the government should not use tax payers dollars to support an abortion clinic when abortion goes against many peoples religious beliefs, and by forcing them to pay taxes for abortion, you are directly violating their 1st amendment rights.

Good luck to you too and yes, let's have a good debate.
Rebuttal 1: Selling of fetal tissue.
"Planned Parenthood has been shown to be selling body parts and tissue from aborted babies (1). We as a country can not support this monstrosity."
So let"s say that this is true. Now let"s look at some of the facts, this practice is legal if it is not done for profit. Planned Parenthood reports that this is not done for profit, but the price they sell it at is only enough to cover the cost of transportation and storage.
This means the practice is legal. So that"s one issue resolved.
The next is if this practice is ethical or not. So let"s take a few things into account. 1. By the time the fetus" are sold they are already dead, and would be disposed off if they are not used. 2. If they are used, they are used for medical research. Fetal tissue is very important for medicine because of their extreme regenerative ability with stem cells. Think about it this way, you start off with 2 cells, a sperm and egg cell. In 9 months you have a full grown baby with fully functional organs, fascinating isn"t it? This phenomenon is thanks to what you call stem cells. Imagine if we could use that regenerative ability. In theory we could replicate any cell in the human body. With that ability we could cure many of the currently incurable diseases.
With the study of stem cells we can learn more about diseases like cancer as well as birth defects, and with using stem cells we can cure diseases such as cardio vascular disease, Parkinson"s and diabetes.
So is it ethical? Yes, yes it is. It is close to the same logic as donating your body to science upon death.
Have you ever lost a loved one to diseases like cancer? I have, and that"s an experience no one should have to go through. If we advantage our medical technology in stem cell research that may be someone no one has to go through. So yes it is ethical if we can save lives and make sure no one has to go through that experience.
Rebuttal 2: religious beliefs
"Also the government should not use tax payers dollars to support an abortion clinic when abortion goes against many peoples religious beliefs," That's just a price you have to pay for living in the U.S. The government does many things that the citizens do not support, yet we still have to pay tax dollars to support it. This includes but is not limited to wars, political support etc. The US government will always do stuff with taxpayers money that taxpayers do not support, and that's just the way it is.
"you are directly violating their 1st amendment rights."
This is actually false,
First Amendment - Religion and Expression. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances
Under this amendment you have the freedom to practice any religion you would like. Planned Parenthood in no way violates this. You have the full right to NOT take part in an abortion or support it, but someone else taking part in an abortion is in no way an infringement on your rights, therefore your 1st amendment rights are not being violated.
In fact it's quite the opposite. If we make laws against Planned Parenthood based on religion that is, if anything against the 1st amendment. The amendment strong states that there must be church and state separation. Making a law based on religious beliefs is in violation of church and state separation.
Now onto offensive arguments.
Contention 1: Teen pregnancy and STIs
Teen pregnancy is a serious issue in America. Among developed countries we have the highest rate of teen pregnancy.
If you read this report here: http://www.plannedparenthood.org... You will see the many ways that Planned Parenthood tackles this issue. It 1. Provides comprehensive sex education that teaches abstinence as well as sexual health information like condoms and other contraceptives. Comprehensive sex education has been proven to reduce STI infections as well unwanted pregnancy. If you read the report it also talks about how it is empirically proven that "Increased Use of Contraception Accounts for 86 Percent of the Recent Decline in
Teenage Pregnancy" So by providing teens with contraceptives we only help reduce rates of teen pregnancy, and that's exactly what Planned Parenthood does.
Also "Easy Access to Contraception Helps Reduce the Incidence and Cost of Teen Pregnancy" So again that's exactly what Planned Parenthood does. They also offer confidentiality which is proven to attract teens to their services, therefore reducing teen pregnancy.
Planned Parenthood should be kept publicly funded because they use the methods that are scientifically proven to work best, that is the best way to tackle the issue of teen pregnancy and the spread of horrible and preventable diseases. They do best, because they understand how teens think and do their absolute best to work with them. Many other programs do not do this, such as abstinence only sex education which has been shown to make the problem worse. Planned Parenthood should be kept because they are the solution we need. If we cut funding to them, I promise you the problem will get worse.
It is true that PP (Planned Parenthood) does provide these services, but so do almost all local and school based health clinics. Also even though they may provide these services their main revenue and main operation is abortion. Abortion patients constitute 12 percent of Planned Parenthood clients -- 332,000 of 3 million unduplicated clients in its most current report. 37 percent of all Planned Parenthood clinic income revenue is from abortion procedures, according to conservative estimates.
Rebuttal 2: Freedom of Religon
The fact of the matter is though that people who have a religious objection to abortion are having their tax dollars fund the largest abortion clinic. By having my taxes go to it, I am indeed supporting it.
Contention 1: Planned Parenthood is not safe for women and young girls
Recent undercover footage released by Lila Rose"s Live Action shows Planned Parenthood employees in several states willing to aid and abet in acknowledged human sex trafficking of girls as young as 14. (1) The undercover footage resulted in the firing of Amy Woodruff, manager of the Central New Jersey Planned Parenthood clinic. (2) It also caused Planned Parenthood to call for mandatory training sessions of thousands of its employees across the country on reporting requirements. (3)

2 - http://www.nj.com...
3 - http://www.nytimes.com...
"It is true that PP (Planned Parenthood) does provide these services" So with this Pro concedes that planned parenthood helps prevent Teen pregnancy and STIs.
"but so do almost all local and school based health clinics." Well, this is actually not true. In fact only 19 states in the U.S require that any sex education that is taught must have factual base. In other words, in the rest of the 31 states schools can say almost anything about sex education whether it is true or not.
Planned Parenthood does what schools should be teaching, factual evidence about sexual health and safe sex. Planned Parenthood also provides contraceptives
Then for the rest you talk about the fact the Planned Parenthood also offers abortion. I don't see what this has to do with Teen Pregnancies and STI's but it just furthers their ability to reduce the amount of teen parents and unwanted children.
I truly hope this doesn't turn into a debate about the morality of abortion, because that's not what the debate should really be about.
Now to further my argument I would like to stress on just how terrible teen pregnancy, parenthood and STIs are.
If you look here -> http://youth.gov... You will see that 1. Teen parents are much less likely to graduate high school. 2. Have a very small chance of graduating college.
Their kids are more likely to be 1. underdeveloped at birth and more likely to face infant mortality. 2. Have lower levels of emotional support (Mostly from parents) 3. Have behavioral problems and chronic medical conditions. 4. Spend their lives in prison. 5. Not achieve in school and dropout 6. Become teen parents themselves 7. Face joblessness as adults.
Children of teen parents also contributes to the creation of poverty and often partake in criminal actions. If we want to stop crime, starting with stopping teen pregnancy is a great idea.
Teens giving birth creates a vicious cycle of all of these problems and their kids being very likely to repeat the cycle. The parents and children often become a drain on societies resources by living off social programs.
With STIs the less people who use condoms the more people who are infected, and the people who made that choice aren't the only ones who get affected. Other people become infected through those people. This creates an overall unhealtheir society with the less serious STIs, but it becomes worse with serious infections like HIV. If HIV is allowed to run rampant thousands, if not millions will die. And it's not only people who have sex.
If a pregnant woman is infected with HIV or AIDS her child has a high chance of being infected with a terminal disease for just being born to the wrong mother. That is something we need to stop at all costs.
Contention 2: Medical research
Since you dropped the previous contention I figure it's to the best of my interests to bring it up again and turn it into a contention.
So as I proved before, Planned Parenthood is helping us innovate and advance our medical knowledge with stem cell research. This has the possibility of helping us cure cancer, cardiovascular disease, Parkinson's and diabetes. This research will also help us treat things such as serious burns. This is another reason why we should keep publicly funding Planned Parenthood.
Rebuttal 2: Freedom of Religion
As I have proved before by the government funding Planned Parenthood your first amendment rights are in no way being violated. It is against many religions to have an abortion, that is correct, but it is not against your religion for other people to have abortions. That is their choice and not yours.
Also my point stands that political change should not be made based on religious beliefs because that violates the very important principle of church and state separation.
Rebuttal 3: Plannd Parenthood is not safe for women and young girls
Well, there's a lot of logical fallacy in your argument. If you look at the source you provided what happened was a Planned Parenthood worker informed someone who claimed to run human traficking how to preform abortions, and she did not report the person to authorities.
This is absolutely unacceptable and inexcusable. As a result the worker was rightly fired and Planned Parenthood fired the worker and retrained thousands of workers. This shows that at least one worker was giving information to who she shouldn't and failed to do the right thing.
However this does not mean that Planned Parenthood is not safe for women and young girls. Planned Parenthood only offered information to sex traffickers, while inexcusable and horrible Planned Parenthood itself is not putting anyone at risk. That is the sex traffickers doing and their doing only.
This also does not reflect on Planned Parenthood as a whole. A few bad apples does not mean it's a bad tree. For example, in the public education system there are a few instances of a teacher or worker sexually assaulting/raping students. That is horrible and inexcusable, but it does not mean that the public school education system is unsafe for students.
Also, as you stated yourself, Planned Parenthood retrained their workers to respond more appropriately to this and report the sex traffickers. This is a good and appropriate response, and it shows that Planned Parenthood is really here to help.
