According to the NY times, there could be as many as 2 billion parking spots in the Us. 800 million is what many believe and two thirds of them are empty. They cover an area larger than Delaware and Rhode island combined. Why are we wasting so much valuable land on something that has no use most of the time. Because we have a dysfunctional system of cars-come-first and everything else is not important, even if buildings are running out of space. This is one of our biggest inefficient habits that we don't think about. There are millions of empty parking lots around our country. So if so much land is wasted for no use, why not make them something beautiful, green and a somewhat enjoyable place to be. Here are some ideas that seem kind of attractive. We could plant more trees in them because most don't have any. Even better, we could build a roof over them and put lots of solar panels there or build a garden with trees or anything good. Oh and having a roof over the lots will make them more like 70 instead of 110 degrees. Just making them something where people can somewhat enjoy themselves instead of a depressing eyesore is a big step. Turning always empty lots into parks or community gardens seems like a pretty good idea. Mass parking lots are bad for the environment and are a major source of runoff and pollution. In an age of climate change and going as green as possible, this seems to make too much sense. We need to think seriously about this as a way of fighting climate change and improving the environment our society. There is so much opportunity in parking lots and i think it is unacceptable especially in this day and age. Could you think of reasons why this wouldn't work? Thanks for reading and I recommend reading this article http://www.nytimes.com....

I shall provide absolutely no sources for what I am about to say.
No we should not turn our parking lots into hippie spaces.
1. You are talking about billion dollar projects
2. Existing parking lots are not bad for the environment
3. Most parking lots are privately owned and therefore are not at your disposal to be whatever it is you want them to be
4. Adding solar panels to parking lots is hilarious
5. The federal government has already confiscated land, it's called National Parks
6. You're version of what is beautiful is different than others
7. There are so much more important things that need to be funded
8. Lol
9. Are you serious?
10. If we were able to obtain the necessary funding for this project, and were able to force the property owners of said parking lots to relinquish their rights to their property, and we were able to rip up the concrete, planting a few trees will effect the environment in 0 ways.
11. This is not the answer to climate change
12. We already have enough solar panels, and if we wanted more, we would have more. Unfortunately they are expensive and ineffective.
13. I think more harm will be done to the environment but ripping up the concrete than it is just leaving it alone
14. There are already hippie havens for people like you, it's called star bucks
15. Perhaps if big government were not crushing businesses, these empty parking lots you speak of would be full
16. How does this big idea of yours combat the world being dominated by cars? Do you think that if the government destroyed parking lots that people would stop using cars simply because they have no place to go? Don't you think that by turning parking lots into the hippie centers would only create more parking lots? Hmm...
17. May God have mercy on your soul.

It's not hilarious. They've already made bike and foot paths paved with solar panels, and they're starting on roads. They are working even better than predicted. So it's not ineffective.

We "can" do almost anything. Fairly meaningless resolution.
