Round 1 is for acceptance and selection of a dinosaur.

You must select and then advocate in favor of one dinosaur species, (and yes, you must select a species, not just a genus) and you can take this debate as seriously as you want to. BoP is shared.

Exactly what "best" means will be a matter left to the voters to determine.

I will be arguing that the domesticated chicken, Gallus gallus domesticus, is the best dinosaur.

I'd like to thank Aran55633 for the opportunity to debate. While I personally believe the best dinosaur is "all of them," I shall argue on behalf of the "Tyrant Lizard King," or Tyrannosaurus rex:

I thank my opponent for accepting this debate challenge, and would like to say that I agree; all dinosaurs are awesome.

Now, on to my arguments.

1.) Accessibility.

It would be very difficult for most people to acquire a quality Tyrannosaurus fossil. You would either have to have permission from the landowner, whether it be public or private land, to search for material within a fossiliferous rock formation in the Western United States dating back to that time, (and even after that, there's certainly no guarantee that your search would bear any fruit) or you would have to purchase it.

They are quite expensive, often priced at $10,000+. And that's for just a single tooth. I collect fossils, but I don't have one because they're simply too rich for my blood.

A chicken, on the other hand? I could go to a grocer right now and get about 90% of a chicken, with an articulated skeleton and well-preserved soft tissue, for less than $20. Heck, I could even have it fried or grilled. You wanna talk about bang for your buck, that's where it is.

2.) Utility.

What use does any person have for a Tyrannosaurus specimen? Even if you're a paleontologist, you'll just look at it occasionally... And it'll just lie there, and may even fall apart if it isn't properly cared for.

A chicken, on the other hand, is very useful. There's a reason why there's more than 50 billion of them. They are an important source of food, what with their delicious meat and nutritious eggs, [1] and they serve, for some people, as a source of entertainment, what with their tendency to engage in intraspecific fighting. The name alone is a source of amusement for me. [2]

3.) Because it demonstrates common ancestry between Tyrannosaurus and birds.

Evidences of this include the fact that chickens have retained the ability to develop teeth, [3] the presence of feathers on chickens and non-avian dinosaurs, [4] and hundreds of skeletal and soft tissue synapomorphies, [5] among others.

The chicken helps to show that birds are, in fact, an aberrant lineage of dinosaurs.

Over to you, Con.
