I will pick my firewall wall and you pick your firewall.
I pick spyshelter because it offers full HIPS protection out of the box.

i believe that OpenDNS is the best firewall cause. It gives you step by step instructions on how to install and notify you when something happens.

Spy Shelter is a system monitor that protects your whole system.
Key features:
"Global Hook Installation
"Rootkit Installations
"Thread Context Changing
"Direct Physical Memory Access
"Remote Thread Creation
"DLL Code Injection
"Kernel Driver Loading
"Program State and Memory Modification
"System Critical parts Registry Modification

Spy Shelter also protects you from drive by downloads. Most firewalls focus on creating rules and protecting (stealth) your ports, so that a hacker can't hack into your PC. If your PC gets compromised and your PC gets infected with malware, the firewall that you are using will not protect you. Spyshelter also protects you from social networking.

A firewall would still work the same way. The VPN might have special instructions on how to configure the firewall. As I said before, its still necessary.

VPN providers only protect your privacy (anonymity); When you use a VPN, your data is encrypted, so that a third party (Internet service provider, law enforcement, NSA, etc.) can't see what your doing online. A VPN also makes it harder, so that people can't track your location. If you are using a VPN to protect your privacy make sure that you choose a VPN provider that doesn't keep any data retention logs and a provider not located in the US. If you plan on using your VPN to play online games, then choose a VPN for online gaming (low ping). If you plan to download a lot of torrents, then you will need a VPN that supports SSOCKS5 proxy.

Using a VPN doesn't provide much protection from hackers. Your PC can still be compermised from visiting a website, DLL injection, email attachment, or installing software. A good firewall will be able to stop the trojan or any other exploit from infecting your PC. A good 2 way firewall will log every service or device that connects online, or interacts with OS. If you plug in a USB flash drive that's infected, your firewall should catch it before your Antivirus does. If you have a rootkit (BIOS) malware, you will know because your firewall will be making strange requests.
