I feel that rap music is worse for our society.

First, for clarification purposes, i am not talking about hip hop.
Secondly, the debate goes as follows. Round 1: Arguements, Round 2: Rebuttals.

To anyone who excepts this debate I thank you for doing so and wish you good luck.

To quote John Harris, a writer for "The Independant Newspaper of Morgan State University", "rappers of today put a major blemish on our society."

The main problem with rap is that it circulates negative stereotypes that all black men are thugs, partake in violence, sex, drugs, money, and material things that satisfies themselves. In the same stereotype, black women seem to be money-hungry sex objects.

So my first arguement is when these stereotypes perpetuate through our society, the will begin tp be regarded as true. When those stereotypes are regarded as true it show that our society has become worse.

An August 22nd blogcritics magazine states "An overwhelming amount of rap is mysogynistic, hate-fueled, sadistic, and violently anti-authority (but not pro-freedom). Much of it glorifies gang violence, killing the police, and violence against women. Not exactly the most positive thing for young black males (or white ones, for that matter) to hear all the time."

Truly rappers have a very large influence on our society's youth. Many children, and teenagers may begin to think that "gang violence, killing the police, and violence against women" is acceptable in our culture. Which it obviously is not. So when more people believe that said acts are acceptable and choose to engage in those acts our society again worsens.

So overall i feel Rap is worse for out society because:
1. It perpetuates negative stereotypes that will soon be believed by some people.
2. Rap poses a negative influence on our youth. Those negative influence causes our youth to believe that serious crimes are acceptable in our society.

Thank you

The Debate at hand is not a matter of taste or personal prefferance. I listen to very limited rap and no country at all.

I believe that country music is "worse for our soceity." (By the way I would like my opponet to clearly define "worse for our soceity. Thank you.)

Unlike rap that can be, or is meant to be offensive, country has the ultimate sterotype that is Country music=Patriotic Americans. Some how country music found it's way to be the official music type for Lady Liberty.

So why is this bad? I think patiotism is important. And so do alot of American youth. When listening to rap you don't need to question whether or not it has a bad message because the message is clear. You can hear the bad stuff in the music, the curses, innuendos, and all other "dishonorable" language used is clear to hear.

But country has an interesting cover. They hide their promotion of promiscuity. Now there are some country songs that are flat out bad without trying to hide it. ("A Lap Dance is so Much Better When a Stripper is Crying" by Blood Hound Gang)

But that country song that says "Save a Horse, RIDE a Cowboy." This song plays at all the highschool dance. But some of Ludacris music discusses the harsh reality of urban life, well apparently because he has some other bad songs he isn't aloud at highschool events.

The song " All My Exes Live In Texas" prooves that while rap perpetuates bad sterotypes in the black community, country does the same to white poorer Americans in the south. "At the Gas Station of Love, I Got the Self Service Pump " yeah...this title just scared me....

Because country is so good at hiding it's bad tone songs like "Why Are You Drinkin With Me Jesus?" The lyrics from this song include:"Does your head pound Jesus as hung over you do rise....how does paradise look Jesus, through holy bloodshot eyes...
Should we take a cab home Jesus...aw man we can hoof it from here...
I know you can walk on the water but can you walk on this much beer?"

Thank you.

Definition:
worse for our society- having a negative effect on our society.
Simply our burden is to proove which genre of music has more negative effect on our society.

First i would like to say that country does have a negative effect on our society, but truly I feel rap music has a more of a negative effect on our society.

Yes, "At the Gas Station of Love, I Got the Self Service Pump " scares me too.

I will cite a study done by William Weston a sociology professor at Yale University.

This study was conducted on October 28th 2005.

In this study Professor Weston compared that top rap and country songs at that time. Those being:

Soul Survivor, by Young Jeezy Featuring Akon
Gold Digger, by Kanye West Featuring Jamie Foxx
Like You, by Bow Wow Featuring Ciara
Girl Tonite, by Twista Featuring Trey Songz
Play, by David Banner

Better Life, by Keith Urban
Skin (Sarabeth), by Rascal Flatts
Probably Wouldn't Be This Way, by LeAnn Rimes
Who You'd Be Today, by Kenny Chesney
Redneck Yacht Club, by Craig Morgan

In summary of the of the study Professor Weston said, "I read both sets of top-selling songs as telling us more about the audience than the performers. The audience for country songs wants a world of married parents taking care of their kids, and encouraging young love, in a life in which material things are secondary. The rap audience, on the other hand, wants to feel the feeling of a bleak world of sex, money, and impermanence in all relationships.

Both audiences, we know from other research, are predominantly white. The country singers, though, are popular because they reflect the lives and aspirations of an audience that is like the singers themselves. The appeal of rap songs about brutal, criminal, misogynist black men to the white boys who buy most rap music is that rap portrays a life they don't live, but are darkly attracted to."

Once again i do feel country music has a negative effect, but not to the extent of rap music. As said many times rap music largely influences todays youth, and this influence allows our youth to believe that such serious crimes, and sexual acts are acceptable.

While, the song "Save a horse, ride a cowboy" seems to give a message of sex, which is legal! While killing police officers, doing drugs, fighting in gangs, and violence against women is obviously illegal.

I would also like to add giving a message of patriotism is not a bad thing!
Patriotism:devoted love, support, and defense of one's country; national loyalty.
I dont find that bad.

So overall,
I feel that country does have a negative effect on our society, but not to the extent of rap music, which promotes illegal acts.
My opponent has not yet prooved that country has more of a negative effect. And i dont see how he can. The vast majority of rap songs promote illegal things. While country doesnt, and if a couple of songs did, okay, but the majority of country songs do NOT promote illegal acts.

I thank my opponent for accepting this debate. =]

My opponet presents a respectful look on this topic, and as I agree Rap music is at times promoting unmoral life styles so does country.

On CMT (the country music Television) has shows playing like Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader compettion on the weekdays while BET (Black Entertainment Television) has shows to raise awarness on AIDs, education in Urban communties, and ways to intrest the youth in American politics. On Sundays even while CMT has shows like 50 sexiest country videos BET has sunday inspriational.

The lifestyle that the music (country) promotes overall as advertise by the "country music Television" is promiscuity and sex appeal, however this fact is overshadowed by the appearnce of Country and it's "all-american" sound compared to by Raps sexist and violent tone.

Both music styles have their Pros and Cons, but the thing is Rap has very clear Pros and very opposite, but still just as clear, Cons. The line between family appropiateness is often too foggy when it comes to issues regarding sex and or other promiscuos situation.

I really have nothing else to say, other than vote Con and LONG LIVE ROCK N' ROLL!!

I don't think either of these people have done nearly enough research into their respective genres to bring any semblance of a valid argument to the table.

The arguments are filled with painful associations and tiresome generalizations. Too much cherry picking, no attention to a wider picture. No demonstration of real understanding of the musical genres or what they represent across a wide spectrum.

The topic would better be written,
"Rap is worse for our society than country"
with Life as PRO and Left as CON.

First, I would like to say that Bloodhound Gang is not a country band. It is often listed as rock.

Next, the con debater compare CMT to BET when BET is not even a music station. I'm sure if (or if there is) a rap music station comparable to CMT, it would be just as objectionable.

Nice argument though.

This debate is pointless. It is clearly fueled by un-biased members who are clearly trying to bash their least favorite genre of music.

this outlook on country completely disgusts me. It's clear to see that BOTH sides have taken a personal twist into their arguments. i listen to both country and rap. i do believe however, rap does have the worst outlook on society. Take for instance mystikal, lil wyte, ludacris, and three 6 mafia. they rap about drugs. CONSTANTLY. blueberry yum yum, still smoking, oxycottin, stay flyyyyyy. these songs pertain to illicit drug use and glorify this so called high life of drugs, violence, and sex. the worst you can get out of a country song is them speaking of either sex, or alcohol. both are generally in a joking manner as well.
