Why are words so hrard
tejretics

Con

I accept. BoP is on Pro, and Pro must establish an objective criterion for what is "right". I need not present any contentions, and need only rebut Pro's arguments due to the distribution of the onus via. Hitchens's razor.

Pro has still not fulfilled their burden of proof. Since the BoP lies entirely on them, I need not present any arguments. Thus, I need only bounce this debate back to Pro.

"Spelling is part of a system that teaches us to judge others based on intellectual ability."

You can say the same for sports competitions; don't let anyone win or lose. Criticism is often necessary for improvement. If you are told that you are perfect just as you are, then what motives do you have to pursue improvement? I personally prefer that my mistakes are pointed out.

"Children should rather be encouraged to choose their own subjects."

To a degree, and when they reach a better level of understanding of what they want, perhaps. There are many things that need to be taught because they are fundamental. Children are not sufficiently competent or knowledgeable to determine what's best regarding their own education.

"Words are just a way of getting concepts across to other people. How you spell sumthing (something) doesn't matter. As long as you get your concept accross."

I agree with the first point, but disagree with the second. Proper grammar and correct spelling must be withheld in order to preserve the integrity of language. If the written language is overly permissive, the uniformity will deteriorate. In order for us to communicate effectively, we must maximize and maintain the commonalities among all who speak/write a language. Misspellings, bad grammar, and making up word forms degrades the effectiveness of communication over time.

Well said brother Chaosism. Words are just a way of getting concepts across to other people. How you spell sumthing (something) doesn't matter. As long as you get your concept accross. Spelling is part of a system that teaches us to judge others based on intellectual ability. This is wrong. It creates feelings of inadeqacies in children which manifest is detrimental behavior in adulthood. Although education is vital in childhood developement I believe its wrong to impliment a point system. Children should rather be encouraged to choose their own subjects. Based on things they are passionate about. Not only will they love learning, but they will learn faster and better. And what a pleasure it would be to teach a class of children who actually want to learn. Isn't this a more logical approach than the current system?

Reasons for voting decision: Pro FF'd, so conduct to Con. Pro's misspellings were rather egreggious, er I mean egregious, so S&G to Con. There seems to be no real resolution, so I'm not sure what the BOP actually is, and thus lean on S&G and conduct only.
