I believe that Hitler invaded counties to reunite the German people, destroy communism, honor a treaty/alliance, or fight an aggressive nation who had become a threat to Germany by declaring war on her.

If you believe Hitler invaded or started a war for any other reasons please accept this debate as the Con to share your opinions.

I agree to the terms and conditions of this debate. I for one, believe that Hitler invaded neighboring countries to show that after WW1, they were not completely weak and useless. Hitler wanted power and dominance for Germany. As for the Treaty created after WW1, he broke almost every part of the treaty terms. Thank you, And good luck to my opponent.

I would like to thank mcalcara for accepting this debate.

Germany invaded Czechoslovakia to bring the German people living in the Sudetenland into Germany. They invaded Poland to gain lost land during World War I. Austria was not invaded, but annexed peacefully. France and Britain declared war on Germany. Germany invaded France since the French Army was mobilizing for an offensive into Germany and to reclaim Alsace-Lorraine. Luxembourg and Belgium had to taken for a successful invasion of France. Holland and Denmark were occupied since they could be staging areas for an invasion of Germany. After Denmark was invaded they had a clear path to Norway. Norway had close ties to Britain, but also had fascist groups which would take over the government once taken. The Soviet Union was invaded because they were a real threat to Germany and were the heart of Communism. They also went to liberate the Baltic states which had been occupied by the Reds. Yugoslavia and Greece were pro-western and friendly to Britain and France. Germany saw that they were a threat and allied the other countries in the region and created a coalition of countries. Hungary, Italy, Romania, and Bulgaria along with Germany eliminated the threat. Then they broke up Yugoslavia into Croatia, Serbia, and Montenegro. These were independent states which replaced Yugoslavia, but didn't destroy it. Hitler would have set up more of these independent governments in occupied territories, but was afraid they would be to weak if invaded by the allies. So, as you can see Hitler did not plan to take over the world, but instead were fighting a war against an enemy. There are many examples of neutral countries in his range that he did not invade such as Switzerland, Sweden, Liechtenstein, Spain, Andorra, Portugal, Southern France which held no threat, ...etc. As you can see this was just a war, not a struggle for world domination. The idea of world domination was spread by British and American propaganda.

I believe that Germany invaded other countries to show that Germany is superior and not completely weak after the terms of the Treaty. In invading the neighboring European countries, Germany broke many parts of the treaty of Versailles. The first 26 Articles of the Treaty set out the Covenant of the League of Nations; the rest of the 440 Articles detailed Germany's punishment: Germany had to accept the Blame for starting the war (Clause 231). This was vital because it provided the justification for... Germany had to pay "6,600 million (called Reparations) for the damage done during the war. Germany was forbidden to have submarines or an air force. She could have a navy of only six battleships, and an Army of just 100,000 men. In addition, Germany was not allowed to place any troops in the Rhineland, the strip of land, 50 miles wide, next to France. Germany lost Territory (land) in Europe. Germany"s colonies were given to Britain and France. Germany shouldn't have had the ability to attack other countries because they had been mostly demilitarized.

Also, Hitler took the advantage of the fact that no world leader wanted to go to war. He took this chance to prove that Germany is strong. Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in January 1933. Almost immediately he began secretly building up Germany's army and weapons. In 1934 he increased the size of the army, began building warships and created a German air force. Compulsory military service was also introduced. Although Britain and France were aware of Hitler's actions, they were also concerned about the rise of Communism and believed that a stronger Germany might help to prevent the spread of Communism to the West. In 1936 Hitler ordered German troops to enter the Rhineland. At this point the German army was not very strong and could have been easily defeated. Yet neither France nor Britain was prepared to start another war. Hitler also made two important alliances during 1936. The first was called the Rome-Berlin Axis Pact and allied Hitler's Germany with Mussolini's Italy. The second was called the Anti-Comintern Pact and allied Germany with Japan. Neville Chamberlain, Prime Minister of Britain, met with Hitler three times during September 1938 to try to reach an agreement that would prevent war. The Munich Agreement stated that Hitler could have the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia provided that he promised not to invade the rest of Czechoslovakia. Hitler was not a man of his word and in March 1939 invaded the rest of Czechoslovakia. Despite calls for help from the Czechoslovak government, neither Britain nor France was prepared to take military action against Hitler. However, some action was now necessary and believing that Poland would be Hitler's next target, both Britain and France promised that they would take military action against Hitler if he invaded Poland. Chamberlain believed that, faced with the prospect of war against Britain and France, Hitler would stop his aggression. Chamberlain was wrong. German troops invaded Poland on 1st September 1939. He was Golden. He had no opponents for they didn't want to go to war because WW1 had been finished recently.

There had also been rumours that Poland was planning on taking most of Germany. However, he may have taken this as a chance to show "Germany is strong, Germany is independent, Germany doesn't need to rely on allies." Coming from Calvin College, Background: The German army began publishing a biweekly magazine in 1937. This article is the first reporting on the German invasion of Poland. The claim is that Hitler was completely innocent, indeed that Poland had plans to take over most of Germany. The English wanted this war in the crazy hope that it was their last chance to stop Germany"s growing strength. They passionately avoided doing anything that might have prevented war. Rather than encouraging Poland to accept the F"hrer"s generous proposals to resolve the situation, they encouraged it to let the deadline pass, thereby providing a reason for war. The F"hrer felt obliged to strike back only after Polish troops had crossed the German border at several places. The German fight is a defensive fight. We fight because of the open announcements that they would do everything in their power to strangle National Socialist Germany through military or economic means.

Thank you.
