A debate question to everyone: Why do us insignificant, tiny humans think we are significant in the universe?
The vast majority of us humans are so incredibly vain when it comes it comes to thinking we know the workings of the universe, and our understanding of it. (My question is at the bottom, read please first)

Think about it – The Earth is so infinitesimally small compared to the universe that we are like a tiny drop of water out of all seven oceans, and humans are so extremely insignificant and minuscule in the hundreds of trillions of stars and galaxies that are millions of lightyears away that we are as insignificant as one bacterium in a planet thousand times the size of this one – yet we still claim that God made us in his image, that we are the center of Gods attention, and that we are oh so important in this world, and that we know exactly what happens after we die. We know nothing of the universe around us, except within in our galaxy and a few beyond, yet we have the audacity and arrogance to claim that we are so incredibly special and unique. Laughable.

We tend to think animals are beneath us, that we are dominant, that God has vested such a special interest in us that he looks over us and punishes us for misbehavior.

I've examined all of the religions and they all have one similar premise: that we as humans are for some reason endowed with an afterlife or with rebirth. The three Abrahamic faiths – Christianity, Islam, and Judaism – all claim that their is an after life. Hinduism states that their is reincarnation, and that after reaching a higher state you eventually attain moksha. Buddhism states a similar concept to Hinduism, where you attain nirvana.

Haven't you realized that the only reason religion was created was to rationalize our fear of death, our fear of the unknown? Instead of confronting the fact that we might just cease to exist when we die, our ancestors created fairytales just to rationalize our fear of death, as well as comfort us by making it seem as if we are so special?

I'm an agnostic. I don't claim to know whether there is a god or not, but when someone suggests that humans are so endowed and special, I find it incredibly naive and vain.

My question to you is this: Why do you think we humans are so special in this infinitely growing and infinitely large universe? We are smaller than the smallest of organisms compared to the unmeasurable universe, so why do you insist God vests so much interest and care into us? What makes us special?

Don't quote some verse from some holy book, or say "God has touched my life", or some nonsense like that. I want cold, hard facts, which is what I have presented you.

Thank you.

All things are very small compared to the universe and all its mystique and beauty, there is no denying that. However when you compare anything to a single thing that is infinite yet still expanding, then ALL things look insignificant in size. If I were to compare any living creature to the size of the moon then all things would seem insignificant, whether it be an ant or a blue whale, two life forms that are very different in size that compared to the moon are minuscule.

Since we dont know nearly everything about the universe, it is only fitting to compare the human race to what is known, and most of that lies here on Earth. If you compare us to other animals, humans have always been superior in many important ways.

Most animals thrived early on when their numbers were few by using inherited qualities like speed, claws, ability to fly, night vision, remarkable sight or hearing, etc. Humans though are the most naturally non-superior hunters when it comes down to speed or strength, so how did we even survive to the point of 7 billion people?? (not quite 7, just rounding up since their is like 6.7 or so). The reason humans survived so early is because we were advanced enough to learn that we can exploit our environment enough to give us what we need to stay alive. Early man, through the use of tool making, allowed us to hunt mammoths, creatures far larger than most other land animals who could kill a man by stepping on him. Yet we were the hunters and they were the hunted, the equivalence of a mouse hunting a lion. What truly helped us become so great in numbers despite our unimpressive physical powers is the discovery of agriculture. The science we unlocked so that we no longer had to hunt and follow migratory routes of our prey just to live and allowed us to settle down n one place with food supply never having to be an issue.

My main point is, Humans are special because to date we are the most advanced and intellectual species of animal to ever have existed on Earth. No animal comes even close to our intelligence levels of even the most undeveloped human. For example, babies can learn parts of an advanced language defined by alphanumeric symbols that each have their own meaning and sometimes have other meanings as well, and they can use them and put them into words which can then be used to form crude sentences to convey a message of meaning, by the time they turn 4 years old.... No other species of animal can learn something so complex and so advanced at such an early stage in their life. In fact no other species of ANY age can learn something like that.

Now consider how far we've come. Humans have been around for about a couple million years, i dont know the exact date but it doesnt matter because the Earth is 6 billion years old, so we have been part of this planet for a very, very relatively short time compared to other forms of life. If the age of the Earth were a 24 hour clock where the formation of the planet began at midnight and the current date is midnight the next day, Humans have only been around for about the last 5 to 7 minutes, yet look at what we have done with our intellect in those few short minutes. We have evolved from a species that hunted with sharpened sticks to a species that can travel in space, observe the distant galaxies of the universe, understand how nature itself works, why, and how. Humans have existed for an incredibly short amount of time and we have done so much in that time. Humans are the center of the universe because as far as we know we are the most advanced and observant species of life of all time. And we will continue to believe that until we discover a smarter life form, and we have not found one yet despite decades of searching now.

Humans are the center of the universe because to date we have failed to find any kind of life form that outclass us in intelligence here on Earth. Does that make us the center of the UNIVERSE though? so far, yes.

We have begin looking to the Cosmo's for signs that life, intelligent or not, exists out there, and so far we have not found any, in the Universe. Now I understand that a very small fraction of the universe has been studied, that number is a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of 1% or so. However we have been looking, and we have made far mroe progress in mapping the heavens than any other species of animal here on Earth has. So as of right now, we ARE the center of the Universe and we DESERVE it to because currently we are the smartest and most intellectual species of life on Earth.

"Haven't you realized that the only reason religion was created was to rationalize our fear of death"
HA, not even close. Take the ancient Greek gods and the polytheistic beliefs of the Greek peoples. The Greeks were one of the first set of people to really ponder why things in nature happened. Why did volcanoes erupt? they believed that there must have been a god in there hard at work, the Greeks named him Vulcan. Why did tsunami's and storms ravage boats at sea? They believed that another god, Poseidon, was angry at humans for not respecting him, and thus controlled the weather to make people pay for their disrespect. Religion was created not to rationalize our fear of death, but because early in our existence when we questioned how things worked and why they happened, humans just flat out didnt have an answer. They gave it their best guess and that was how religion was formed, to try to explain the world around us. If the Greek God example isnt early enough lets go to Egypt, one of the first civilizations to begin. Why did the Nile River flood on an annual basis? It was the work of a god. Why did this year the floods not come? the God is not pleased with the respect the humans have given him. Religion was born to satisfy our needs to figure out how the world works, but as time went on more and more became known so that now our previous beliefs were debunked because we began to know why Volcanoes erupt, why the seas can be stormy, and why rivers rise and fall on a seasonal basis.

I will end here and hope I gave a substantial argument to why humans are the center of the universe and as of right now deserve to be.

I've gone back and forth on this. I've typed up and subsequently deleted a handful of remarks. In the end, I decided that I'm going to let you believe that I meant that.

Reasons for voting decision: Con offered nothing but a rant about the seeming lack of proof for man's claim that he is "the center of this universe", bothering neither to post rules and parameters for the debate or to rephrase the resolution. Pro at least offered justifications for such a view, though such arguments about human superiority could have been easily challenged. Nevertheless, Con's forfeits precluded such a chance.
