Con

Withdrawing troops from the Middle East isn't in America's best interested. I will start my debate in round two.

My opponent has made a positive assertion: that withdrawing troops from the Middle East is not in America's best interest. He has the burden of proof, so I'll allow him to make his opening arguments in R2. Thank you and good luck.

I'll give my opponent another opportunity to make his case. If he fails to do so, I will make some arguments in R3 giving him R4 to respond.

Here are a few arguments (with very limited character space) in case Con comes back:

1. The world does not look favorably upon America for going to war in the first place, let alone staying this long [1].

2. Increasing troops in the ME will be received with concern and anger. This will make it more difficult for us to work together toward mutual objectives, such as peace between Israel and Palestine.

3. George Will wrote "Americans should do only what can be done from offshore, using intelligence, drones, cruise missiles, airstrikes and small, potent Special Forces units..." Similar to the ideology behind bombing Hiroshima during WWII, the idea here is to save American lives. We've already lost far too many soldiers unnecessarily; we should focus on protecting American lives by keeping troops off the ground where they're in danger.

4. Instead of more fighting, we should try engaging with locals to achieve cooperation on addressing ongoing conflicts, strengthening civilian rule of law, and promoting economic development. This would empower people in the ME and improve the conditions of their lives. Increasing troops only accomplishes targeting innocent civilians and tarnishing America's reputation. It also encourages the locals to support the Taliban rather than the U.S.; they'd rather be ruled by extremists than be dead.

5. Some point out "Buying, renting, or bribing Pashtun tribes should become the centerpiece of America's stabilization strategy, as it was Britain's when it ruled Afghanistan" [2]. Either them or the guvmint.

6. Congress has approved $1.086 trillion for military operations, base security, reconstruction, foreign aid,
embassy costs, and veterans' health care for the wars in the ME [3]. Our economy is in shambles; this money can best be spent elsewhere.

I agree with the concept of con on this occassion but con has not placed any arguments, very poor. But Lwerd has delivered some very good arguments. So well done Lwerd.
