There is, of course, no way of knowing so please approach this debate in a "tongue-in-cheek" manner, we can speculate and hypothesise but we cannot take the subject too seriously!

So, even though I realise British Imperialism hasn't always been an unmitigated success (the current troubles in Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel and Palestine are all testament to that) I am British myself so I'll take the Pro side and kick the debate off as follows:

When Britain's treacherous European neighbours, the dastardly French, assisted the insurgents in the Thirteen Colonies to defeat the valiant, but outnumbered, British forces during the American Revolutionary War, the rebels went on to form the United States of America.

If history had been different and Britain's North American possessions had remained under control from London (and assuming the territory expanded to the current borders of the US) I propose that, with the assistance of troops from North America, Britain would not only have defeated France in the Napoleonic Wars, but could have seized her possessions as well.

Thus, North America and Western Europe would come under the control of one leader; the First and Second World Wars would never have happened and Britain would not then lost control of her colonies in Africa, Asia and, crucially, the oil rich Middle East.

Okay, half the world would be ruled over by an unelected, over-privileged toff in a crown, while paying for her pack of braying kids to jet around the world spending huge wads of taxpayers' hard-earned cash, but if we Brits can put up with it, so could everybody else.

Let me just start by saying that Britain would not have able control the half the world since colonies almost always fail at some point.

The British Empire has historically no treated its colonies very well. Therefore in order to assume that Britain manage to keep it's colonies one would have to assume that the British managed to instill loyalty to the motherland in all of it's colonies something that would only be likely in the United Sates (or what is would be called under British rule) and Canada. As for the other counties the cultural difference would make it difficult if not impossible to create loyality.

Now if for some reason that was to happen and half the world came under the control of the British, things would certainly not be better than they are today. For one many of the technological advancements made thus far would not have occurred since many of the greatest achievements came out of the struggle for military supremacy. So technologically we'd likely today be using the technology of the late eighteenth to early twentieth century. So technologically things would not be very good.

What are the benefits of half the world being controlled by an unelected body? There is none. Half the world is too large for one colonial power to control without there being utter chaos.

I've got five minutes before the deadline for this argument is up so I'll be brief.

It is not fair to say that Britain hasn't treated all her colonies very well and has not installed a degree of loyalty and cultural identity.

Take India where the national language is English, the national sport is cricket and where afternoon tea is taken more commonly there than back here in good old Blighty!

As for technological advances - we would have made the same advances, just with Russia and China as our enemies, that's all.

Finally you wrote:

"What are the benefits of half the world being controlled by an unelected body? There is none. Half the world is too large for one colonial power to control without there being utter chaos."

I concede that argument holds true, after all, George Bush is currently the leader of the world's only superpower, yet the voters in Florida will tell you that he wasn't elected!

It is actually quite fair to say that the British Empire hasn't treated it's colonies very well since if it had it's colonies would not chosen to rebel and seek independence…no tea would have been thrown in the ocean and America would theoretically still be a colony.

The official language of India isn't English it's Hindi and English. And language isn't a very good way to show positive cultural influence. As for cricket, England has never won a world cup and assuming it had more influence over world of sports would mean the sports world wouldn't be as entertaining as it is today.

Humanity would have indeed made the same technological advances. However these advances would not have occurred as quickly as they have.

So to summarize if the British empire was still intact the following would be true:
1.The internet would not exist as of 2008-04-21.
2.English words would be spelled and pronounced in accordance to the Queen's English.
3.Sports would be less interesting.
4.Modern medicine would still be in its infancy.
5.People would still think Aliens live on Mars…since space exploration would not yet exist.
6.All important ancient artefacts would be located in British museums.
7.There would be no Olympic games.
8.The world (or at least half of it) would be run by an unelected body of tyrants instead of a democratically elected body of incompetent tyrants.
9.Most American fast food chains would not exist depriving many people throughout the world of ever knowing what an Oreo pizza taste like.
10.And finally as my opponent has chosen to admit there would be utter chaos.
There are many more negatives to having the British continue to rule the world but the space allotted is insufficient to list them all.

In conclusion I must state that the world would not be better place if America was still a part of the empire, in fact it would not only be worst it would be disaster.

Although the treatment point still remains, the British actually became anti-slavery crusaders. In fact, sailors could not be let out at cerain ports because they woul dcause a riot and free the slaves.
