Leading up to America starting the war against the Spanish, Cubans were fighting against the Spanish for independence. The Spanish military fought back aggressively, as they didn't want to lose their colony that was making them a lot of money. Newspapers in the US over exaggerated what the Spanish military was doing, making Americans sympathize with the Cubans and against Spain. The animosity against Spain continued to build until it finally boiled over after the sinking of the Maine. Yellow journalists in America blamed the Spanish military, completely fabricating lies and stories about why we should go to war against Spain. The public cried for war, wanting to get even with Spain. The public support for the starting of the war was completely fed by the yellow journalists of the time, leading to America starting the war against Spain.
