Hi, I'm looking forward to this debate. Good Luck and Enjoy !!

Malcolm Bricklin, he of the Bricklin SV1, wouldn't be satisfied until he had forced every American to walk to work. To that end, in 1985, he began importing the Yugo GV, which turned out to be the Mona Lisa of bad cars. Built in Soviet-bloc Yugoslavia, the Yugo had the distinct feeling of something assembled at gunpoint. Interestingly, in a car where "carpet" was listed as a standard feature, the Yugo had a rear-window defroster — reportedly to keep your hands warm while you pushed it. The engines went ka-blooey, the electrical system — such as it was — would sizzle, and things would just fall off. Yugo. Or not.

I thank you for making this debate.

Rebuttal -----

I do not like direct quotes but the Yugo is not the worst car ever sold in America.
You will see worse cars in my argument

Argument-----

Worst definition: bad or ill in the highest, greatest, or most extreme degree
So bad is a very vague term. So cars can be bad looking. Badly operating, have bad reliability, and bad in pretty much every aspect of a car. Here are some cars that have "bad" aspects.

Ford Pinto- Tended to explode when in a rear-end collision. At least the Yugo did not explode .Pinto is a "bad" name. The car also lacks "good" style.

1957 Waterman Aerobile- A car with wings. That should be all I have to say about this car but I will continue in my explaining. A high-wing monoplane with tricycle wheels. The wings weighed the car down and it did a "bad" job at flying. Turning was worse then a Yugo. Speed was worse then a Yugo. Acceleration was worse then a Yugo. An needless to say it was worse looking then a Yugo. Also unreliable, even less reliable then the Yugo(when it comes to flying) and probably driving. Also if you were to crash in the "contraption" you would surely die. And yes this car was sold in America.

Plymouth Prowler- One of the ugliest cars I have ever seen in my life. Its just that simple it is "bad" looking. Much uglier then the Yugo.

The list could go on....

I graciously thank you for accepting this debate. I'm pleased that you responded in a organized coherent matter.

Yugos were produced at the Crvena Zastava factory in Kragujevac, in what is now Serbia. The plant's pre-automotive expertise was in making weaponry.

Attention to detail and fine engineering were not exactly the high points of the Yugoslavian Communist mentality. And what's more, Zastava employees were generally under the influence of sljivovica, a "delicious" plum brandy that made the work day seem to go that much faster.

The vehicle, had "the eighth highest death rate of the 134 most popular 1984–88 model cars on U.S. roads between 1985 and 1989, with 3.6 occupant deaths per 10,000 cars."

The Yugo was voted " worst car of the millennium".

Source: Time Magazine

One critical maintenance issue specific to the Yugo was the need for regular replacement of the interference engine's timing belt — every 40,000 miles (64,000 km). In a non-interference engine, timing belt failure does not cause further damage to the engine. In an interference engine, however, timing belt failure disrupts synchronization between pistons and valves, causing them to smash into each other (hence the name interference engine), thus destroying the engine.

If you got into a crash at 25mph, the car would cost two thirds of the original value to repair, and if your smart enough to know what that means...that's totaled to most insurance companies.

The cars you listed were either safer or higher rated in every way.

I would appreciate if you would post rebuttals.

Rebuttals-----

8th worst death rate? Well that's not the worst is it. The car was still registered in the U.S so it must have had some decency.
Argument-----
I still fail to see how the Yugo is worse then the Waterman Aerobile. This car was not even mass produced in America or anywhere for that matter. The argument said worst car ever sold. So it passes the requirements of this debate. I can tell you it is not easy to register this car. The body is much more flimsy then the Yugo as the materials needed must be lightweight for the flight. Like tin. In a crash this car would be flattened, even from the Yugo. Now that is saying something.

I would also like to add that the Pinto killed thousands of people in it's exploding gas tank.
You said ever sold in America. That includes North and South America .
This allows me to add the Trabant to my list

Trabant- The Trabant's East German background gives it a clear advantage in its bid for the Worst Car of All Time title. The now-fallen communist state provided ideal conditions for the creation of a truly awful vehicle: a demoralized labour force, incompetently-run factories, and a iron-fisted political system that crushed innovation. Trabants were pack and powered by smoke-belching two-stroke engines, and the bodies were constructed of compressed cardboard coated with plastic resin. Reliability was terrible, and the gearshift mechanism is generally agreed upon as one of the worst ever invented. None of these problems quenched demand. In East Germany, the Trabant was the only car available, and the waiting list was typically ten years long. The Trabant went out of production in 1990. The fall of the Berlin Wall removed the Trabant's key feature - a monopoly position.

Also the Yugo had the great Rack and Pinion steering and front wheel drive.
As that is sarcasm, These features keep the Yugo from claiming the worst car sold in America.

Thank you for responding,

You had mentioned the Trabant, I would like to add that North and South America would be classified as the "Americas"
Here is the definition- North America, South America and Central America. "America " - "The United States of America (also referred to as the United States, the U.S., the USA, the States, or America) is a federal constitutional republic comprising fifty states and a federal district. The country is situated mostly in central North America, where its forty-eight contiguous states and Washington, D.C., the capital district, lie between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, bordered by Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. The state of Alaska is in the northwest of the continent, with Canada to the east and Russia to the west across the Bering Strait. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific. The country also possesses several territories in the Caribbean and Pacific." So take The Trabant off your list. Also I would like to add that the Yugo shares the same rear axle design as the Pinto, (Gas tank behind the Axle) making the same crash worthiness as a Yugo. Rack and Pinion steering and front wheel drive is used on most modern cars. Yugo was well know for its power train and steering linkage problem and the 'Waterman Aerobile" has insufficient data for safety and reliability to make a point. I don't see any safety ratings from the NHTSA or any reliability ratings from consumer reports. The Yugo has a well documented case of data and ratings. The cars you presented are insufficient to make a point compared to the Yugo.

Rebuttal-----
America is a general area of the western world. The U.S is referred to as America, but is not only contained to the U.S.

Argument----
Seems as though you want Trabant off my list. Is it because it is worse then the Yugo?
The answer is yes. And the Trabant has been sold in America just not by the corporation, which you failed to classify.

The fact is that the Trabant is worse and it has been sold in "America" and the U.S.
Which proves my point that the Yugo is not the worst car ever sold in America.

Don't be offended Natalija - the debate was just a bit of fun:
